Best Free Music Player and Organizer 6 years 11 months ago tap dancing mouse

MusicBee does not play WMA files (check their forumn). It was a very nice player even with that handicap but had to settle for MediaMonkey music player and once you get it set up to your liking (which may take a little time) you'll agree that you've made the better choice (and it plays WMA with no issues). Great sound with the DFX Audio Enhancer.I don't see where it's heavy on resources. No issues, crashes, etc yet on my Windows 7 64bit PC.

Best Free File or Disk Catalog Organizer 6 years 10 months ago Tapan Chakraborty

Gentibus CD - "for the people" - is a very good name and choice if you're looking for a tool to organize your CD/DVD collection. The scan on CDs, DVDs or hard disks can be categorized and searched. The advanced search function will also find "Harry Po" if you're looking for "Harry Potter". Gentibus CD will find duplicates, smartly discovers image, audio, video and program files as 'super-categories' on its own, which comes very handy when you're archiving a medium with mixed content. A very pleasing feature is that Gentibus CD will show you thumbnails of any pictures you might have archived on your CD/DVD so you will be able to search them somewhat as a virtual CD.

This darn thing kept telling me my data access files where not installed despite installing the latest one.

Hello Gizmodians, I have been using the suggestions on this site for many years. I need some help with this one. I would like to put multiple animated gif files in a folder, then view the files in a grid format with dimensions I specify(to cover entire monitor space) while remaining animated. Does anyone know of a program capable of this? If not what would the code be to create a webpage that would meet those requirements? Thank you fro your consideration and keep up the good work, Sincerely, Tappy

I just tested TrayIt quickly and work but it seem to be some issues. If I use the "place in tray" function and choose "hide window", then restore the window and close the program, the icon for the program still stay in the tray. So if I start the same program and want to minimize to tray again I suddenly have 2 icons for same program. It clutter the tray and create some confusion but don't seem to create any real problems.

Free DVD Copier Offer Exclusive For Gizmo's Readers 6 years 2 months ago tarryB

This piece of software came along at just the right time for me.

I had no problems downloading and activating and using the software although when I ran it again later in the day there was a splash screen that says it is 'time limited'. So maybe one day soon it will stop working. I saw the Xmas code reference under the little man icon - esoteric to say the least. Although the executable has xmas in its name.

This company had a Halloween (2013) freebie for their platinum pro ripper which I downloaded, installed and activated but never actually used until last week. The splash screen on that application informed me that they had changed the registration process and I could go to whatever link they provided. That was an invitation to upgrade for money and on the same page were warnings that activation codes leaked on to the internet would not work. I could not see why my activated application should be crippled unless they had made an error in their generosity and were regretting it.

Thank you Rob for this one, a most timely posting. It (winx DVD copy)salvaged a damaged DVD that other DVDsoftware choked on!

I didn't notice any keylogging information during the install.
I was informed however during the installation that I would have to install Windows Media Player.
I didn't want to install Windows Media Player or windows Media Feature Pack aka Windows6.3-KB2835517-x64.msu (85.0 MB download) but what's a boy to do when logitech can't provide a working driver for his webcam. Worked on Windows 7 and now doesn't on Windows 8.1 despite downloading their latest driver.
It will fire up the webcam OK but fails on recording a video countdown remains on a loop. I visited Logitech's help forum and at at least one other user had the same problem. That user went backwards and forwards downloading the latest driver then the last but one driver and then extra codecs (never a good sign from advice person - sort of like, have you plugged in your webcam? a question of tech desperation). Nothing worked. The brats need to rebuild their driver again.

So I am pleased by this free offer brought to us by George.J

Thank you,

You can also use all chrome extensions and synch everything with google. Has a password manager built in too. It is highly customizable and is also updated regularly to keep pace with Chrome updates since it is based on Chrome. Firefox used to be my favorite but Slimjet has taken its place.

You have an interesting idea of an “emergency” if you always have access to an ATM anytime and anywhere :).

view
99 Practical Tech and Life Hacks and Tips 3 years 9 months ago tarzanxx

Ok, I’ll bite. Not many, but some - but that’s not really the point. If you were aware of these places, then it wouldn’t be an emergency. You’d know ahead of time that you’d need cash. By definition, an emergency is something you aren’t expecting. I agree- in a big city this is less likely to be an issue than traveling for example, or in an unfamiliar area. But even around home or in a big city, this is a good tip for some people. If you really can’t think of any situations when having emergency cash would be useful - and don’t have access to ATM/Debit, here are some.

Heaven forbid your wallet gets lost or stolen. It would be handy to have some cash hiding in your phone case, until you can get that sorted out.

Standing in a checkout with a bunch of groceries and your card is declined for no apparent reason. Maybe a bank error. Glitches happen – cards have issues swiping or scanning sometimes. Surely you’ve been in line behind someone whose card just won’t swipe - the cashier breathes on it, licks it and wipes it on their pants, sticks it on their forehead, rubs it in their armpit, then wraps it paper - trying to get a good swipe. Sometimes cards or scanners just fail. Maybe that’s the guy in front of you, maybe that’s you :). Sure – you can leave all your groceries on the counter and go to an ATM and get some cash, or go to your bank and sort it out – assuming your bank is open – but that’s a bit inconvenient either way. Or you can pull out your emergency cash and be on your way..

Go out for a night with friends and forgot your wallet at home. You can borrow some money from your friends, or pay your own way with your secret “phone cash”.

Maybe you’ve spent more money than you realize and have none left in your account – or you have a shared account and didn’t realize your spouse/partner had made a big purchase and drained the account. Glitch with your payroll deposit…

Even in a big city – while traveling, your bank locks down your account due to “suspicious activity”. That’s happened to many people, myself included. Sure you can call them and get that sorted out- but when do you usually find out for the first time? – When you’re standing in front of a cashier trying to pay for something.

Maybe you didn’t notice that your card had expired. No problem – leave some collateral for the store/restaurant/gas station you’re at, go home and find the new card - then go back and pay for your items. Maybe not an emergency, but inconvenient. Would be nice if you just had $50 hiding in your phone case :).

Pull into a gas station running on fumes and see a sign on the door – “Network is down - sorry cash only”. Drive to another gas station? To an ATM and back? Not sure you’ll have enough gas to make it... Take a chance, or walk to the nearest ATM. Broad daylight in a nice area? No problem. Late at night in a scary neighborhood? Pouring rain? Even $10 cash would be really handy to get you on your way.

Those are just some examples that could happen in a big city scenario- never mind traveling or more rural areas or long stretches of highway with fewer ATMs and credit/debit access. Many people don’t live in big cities and having paper money available “just in case” could be a good idea. If you don’t this is useful - that’s cool :). I didn’t think it was such a ridiculous tip :).

Best Free Digital Image Editor 6 years 7 months ago tassieted

Hi
This is my first post and I would like to say thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge, it's a great boon to the uninitiated like me.
I have a new laptop with windows 8 and don't like the photo imaging "apps" that came with it, I was quite happy with Picture Manager (vista) as it did most of the things I needed, crop, brightness/contrast fix, file compression etc.
So I went looking for a suitable replacement....Photo! Editor looked like it may suit my needs although I was unsure if was compatible with Win8, I checked a few other reviews which suggested it was All Win compatible so I downloaded it. It has loaded OK and I can view the images but won't actually make any changes. I hope someone can put me on the right path to fixing this as it looks like a great program for me.
once again thanks for all your assistance, to especially to the newbies :)

Hi Joe A.TT thanks for your welcoming response. I suspected that it may no longer be an active program after I saw the last post dates on the forum. I read quite a few of the posts but must have missed yours, sorry.Perhaps a note needs to be made in the review to save others from experiencing this problem.

Or you can just use copy /b command in a CMD prompt:

This can give a lot of problems with playback, converting and etc. It sounds like this is the way the above program works.

This removes the header of each file prior to mergeing, and have never given me any problems.

This is one of the geekiest of geek programs. Not a bad thing if you're a tech or programmer. But for the rest of us non tech folks, this is massive information overkill.

Alex did a nice programming job. I had no trouble loading it in Win 7 64 bit. It's just that the program provides far more information about your computer than you and most people will ever need, or understand.

If someone would sit down and write 3 or 4 practical examples of the use of the program, it might make it more desirable to have on the hard drive.

Hi Anupam,

Thanks again for your help on 04/01/2013. Have a different question now. My sister has given me some DVD-Rs that she has added photos that automatically play in a sequence with music and stupid special effects (exploding stars, shrinking imagery, ect.). I wish to copy the photos from this DVD she's authored, and get the captions she's associated with these photos as well, without all the special effects and musics-Just photos and captions. Is there a free software product that will do this? If not, what software would you recommend?

It would appear that she created it with a software called Roxioplasma (2005) and there are .bup, .vob, and .ifo files that this application creates. I need something to open these files so I can pull the photos out with.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for flagging up Infinite Password Generator (IPG). This is very topical for me at the moment as I am trying to find a convenient but powerful way to secure the use of Keepass. Just a few points tho'. I note below that not many have added the use of a key file as a further mechanism to secure access - is that not a consideration? I am playing with IPG; am I right in assuming that the particular instance of IPG that I am using will generate a unique password string for me based on my key phrase? For example if someone else gets my key phrase then can they generate the same p/w from their version of IPG? I am also bothered by key logging grabbing my key phrase - how can that be stopped with IPG as I see that keyscrambler - which I use - doesn't work with IPG? I'm a novice as my username suggests.

Pluses are it runs portably, it has plenty of customizations to sync jobs, runs automatically in the background or on a scheduled basis, has a pleasing GUI, was easy to learn without use of help files, and I have had none of the problems talked about in the comments for this article.

Though I don't use FreeFileSync I have tried out the installer and portable versions obtained from the developer at http://www.freefilesync.org and am pleased to say that in version 7.8 there are no bundled pups or use of open candy. Same with the thumbnail views. Left click and hold on thumbnail and it shows full size image. Single or dual pane. Easy copy, move, delete with built in file shredder. I've tried quite a few file managers, some terrible, some okay. If you work with a lot of images, XYplorer should be just what you're looking for.

Toolwiz Timefreeze (freeware) is as simple as it gets. One click starts timefreeze and isolates all changes in a virtual sandbox. One click stops timefreeze and you have the option of keeping all the changes OR dropping all the changes (which automatically restarts your computer).
That's it.

I havn't used Timefreeze long enough to give it a 100% endorsement. But used it for a few days downloading files, deleting files, etc. ..Selecting both options to keep or discard changes and everything worked as advertised.

Get The Release Version of Internet Explorer 11 For Windows 7 6 years 5 months ago tedwest

Warning: The installation seemed to go flawlessly until my desktop came up. I thought MSFT had converted me to the god-awful Windows 8 desktop - but it was far worse.

IE11 completely wiped out my user profile. It wasn't just a matter of going to the control panel and reinstating it, it was gone.

Per usual, I'd done a complete image backup beforehand, so it was merely a matter of a fifteen minute restore. I'm glad that some had no trouble, but use utmost caution. If you're not prepared, the loss of a profile is only slightly less bad than a computer that won't boot.

I've been using this program for quite a while, and often quite a few times a day. I remember that when I installed it, there was an unofficial patch or something that added more functionality, so I installed that too. I got all the information from The Portable Freeware Collection site.

What I discovered was, and still is, amazing - that 75 to 80 percent of programs don't need to be "installed" at all. I created a separate partition for these "portables" and my actual portables, and my Program Files directory has shrunk enormously.

What that means is you can do smaller backups of C-drive.

Equally important is that if you need to rollback Windows to an earlier date or reinstall it completely, all the programs in the new partition retain their settings and function, leaving only a very few programs that need to be reinstalled

And if you use FreeFileSync to back up Program Files and Roaming, not only will you have even fewer programs to reinstall, but you'll still have all your shortcuts in Quick Launch, Send To, and Startup working.

I preferred Palemoon until it strayed far afield and inportant addons stopped working, Adblock plus for example. The Palemoon version makes it extremely difficult to block portions of pages. Firefox has it's own faults, but I've been able to overcome them satisfactorily if not completely. not so with Palemoon. So I hold Cyberfox in reserve just in case, but the developers irritate me because updates are far more of a nuisance.

Can you believe I never thought of that? I just change the path in the .ini file to that of my Firefox profile, but I believe when you do a Cyberfox update, it changes it back (I haven't updated for a while).

I took your advice and set up IceDragon, and to my surprise it seems to run all FF addons, unlike Palemoon. However... you can't set it as the default browser if you use it in portable mode - - insane. Yes, I know I can set it to the default reader of each page type, but what a nuisance.

Get This Top-Rated Backup & Recovery Program Free Through November 3 years 7 months ago tedwest

I can understand if the gentleman thought that supplying names of competitors would be impolite under the circumstances, but since there are basically only four viable programs in this category, it shouldn't be too much trouble to figure out which ones he was referring to. I've tried them all - extensively, and I much prefer one "backupper" above the rest because it's faster, the resulting files are smaller, scheduled backups are easy, and it has never failed me, unlike the other three.

A Powerful, Free Video Editor 3 years 3 months ago tedwest

I tried this some months ago. My main recollection is that if couldn't get it to be "frame accurate" and it was unnecessarily complicated, though I admit that my memory of it is vague. To me, the best free editor is Avidemux (preferred), or Freemake (fewer features but far simpler).

A New Browser To Rival The Best Of Them 3 years 1 month ago tedwest

Tried Vivaldi last night and was impressed while setting it up, most importantly because it allowed tabs on the bottom. But then... I decided I wanted a decent speed dial, so I looked for one to rival the one I use in FIrefox, and it doesn't exist, though I did find a couple that seemed moderately useful. HOWEVER, you don't appear to be able to get rid of the one that's built into the browser, and it seems both simplistic and incredibly annoying. Looking online, some people said they're "working on" being able to change it. WHAT?

I want to thank you for the tip. I was looking in "Startup," and your solution is in "Tabs." So now those people who claim that Vivaldi is working on the fix are all wet, and I almost gave up. Thanks again, all the best.

Pale Moon. This New Web Browser Is Far From New! 2 years 2 months ago tedwest

Let me elaborate a bit more as I'm quite experienced with many browsers. Pale Moon is as fast as they come, and maybe marginally the fastest. It handles just like Firefox, but it has one serious shortcoming - a lack of add-ons. Most Firefox add-ons won't work anymore, and Pale Moon's own selection is quite lacking, though I would say that in almost all incidences, there are substitutes of prior versions that used to run on Firefox but no longer do. However, if you need an Ebates button for example, you're out of luck

Not only is Pale Moon as fast as Slimjet (the fastest of the Chrome clones I've tried, it's superior to Vivaldi, Opera, and Slimjet in that it has one single entry in the list of running processes while the Chrome clones have many. That may not be a factor until you try to kill a browser that's hung up, but it could also possibly be a factor in why your other programs run slow.

That said, Pale Moon is still my second choice to Slimjet at least until add-on development appears to be more robust, because as it stands, and it might just be my imagination, Pale Moon gives the impression that it can't quite keep up, so I don't want to be dependent on something that might disappear.

I wasn't able to make the portable version of Pale Moon my default browser.. Have you had success doing so?

Pale Moon. This New Web Browser Is Far From New! 2 years 2 months ago tedwest

You're absolutely right, on all counts. Pale Moon is much faster than Firefox, and in my experience, only Pale Moon and Slimjet have no hesitation when you click a (speed dial) link.

If you absolutely, positively need a close Firefox clone, Waterfox is the choice, but it still hesitates a bit when you click a link and thus "pales" in comparison to Pale Moon for speed.

Slimjet is better than Vivaldi for speed, though maybe not enough to matter to you, but feature for feature, to me, Slimjet has a superior feel. For example. Slimjet provides a bookmarks sidebar that auto-closes like Pale Moon's, and it's menu is qiickly accessible by a far right button. On the other hand, Vivaldi's mouse gestures may be more extensive. So it might be a toss-up, but why not try both and see for yourself? Btw, I use an extension called GroupSpeedDial as my substitute for both Browers' built in speed dial. it's far more configurable, and the best of the many I've tried. One quirk though is that in Slimjet, I haven't been able to get it to accept a background image so I use their solid color gradient.

EDIT: This discussion caused me to take another look -at Vivaldi. I hadn't used it since a recent upgrade, and I now find that it seems every bit the equal of Slimjet except for the aforementioned auto-closing sidebar.

Thanks for mentioning that, and I'd like to add that, after saying above I'd revisited Vivaldi and found it comparable to Slimjet, I've already abandoned it because Slimjet has a number of subtleties that Vivaldi lacks. I'd forgotten how annoying it is to have to open and close the sidebar manually in Vivaldi, And I couldn't get two extensions to work in Vivaldi. One is -any- form saver/filler I've tried, and another cures the incredibly annoying Chrome -flaw- that auto numbers downloads instead of overwriting them or even offering to do so. You can overwrite in Vivaldi, but it requires too much manual labor. Conversely, I haven't found any compelling feature in any other browser that would make me want to select that browser over Slimjet.

One thing I forgot to mention that could be very important. Some sites see Pale Moon as a very old version of Firefox and so they won't give you access.

Pale Moon. This New Web Browser Is Far From New! 2 years 1 month ago tedwest

Thanks so much for the tip. I've activated "native" mode, but I don't really have the problem since I switched browsers. However, it would seem that Pale Moon's developers share the view you seemed to express that it is somebody else's responsibility, either the user or the site, to solve this and probably other problems, and in this particular case the question immediately arises: why is it in Firefox compatibility mode in the first place if it's actually not compatible on some sites and they know it? Though such sites may be few, for me, those sites were important ones like banking.

I just saw an update listed on Major Geeks for Basilisk that says, "Basilisk is a Firefox-like web browser from the Pale Moon team that is based on the Goanna (Gecko) layout and rendering engine," and it irritated me not only because you'd steered me onto the fact that Gecko is a compatibility option for Pale Moon and why is "the Pale Moon team" devoting time to another browser as Pale Moon wallows in obscurity despite being noticeably, significantly faster than Firefox and the developers offer a dearth of extensions on a page you can't even search while, relatively recently lot of Firefox extensions became inoperable necessitating the need to find alternatives and live with outdated ones that will never be updated? This Basilisk thing gives the impression that Pale Moon teeters while the developers consider at least the possibility of pursuing another direction. In any case, no one can argue that Pale Moon development seems vibrant.

Pale Moon. This New Web Browser Is Far From New! 2 years 1 month ago tedwest

I believe you've inadvertently made my point, and a late development make's Pale Moon's predicament even less tenable. I know far more about these sorts of things than the average person, and I'm not willing to go searching for a solution to an obscure problem unless I have no alternative. Furthermore, I have never had the problem in question with any other browser, and there are several that are very nearly as speedy as Pale Moon and all have features Pale Moon doesn't. So the only reason to use Pale Moon is for speed and/or because it may have a specific feature(s) that you like that cannot be acceptably replicated in other browsers. But since this problem has been unique to Pale Moon, it dwarfs any minor inconvenience I might encounter with another browser.

Also, and I repeat, the fact that Pale Moon is not compatible with some sites (that the vast majority are compatible is insufficient) and that developers know it, coupled with the fact that a site can report that I'm using a version of Firefox that's too old and the developers must know that and haven't rectified the problem (possibly as simply as upgrading the version number) feeds my contention that development is not as responsive as it should be.

Now the late development... I decided to use Pale Moon tonight using a different compatibility mode, and I immediately found that a site I visit everyday gave me a generic error message before even starting to load the page. Only when I used Firefox mode would the site load. So as a result of our discussion, not only has the problem with Pale Moon been validated, but the proposed solution rendered it less usable for me, and it points up the fact that there is no real solution available. The average user is not going to devote the sort of attention I have when there's a simple solution - use any other browser.

A Browser That Blocks Ads, Downloads Videos, And Is Portable. 2 years 1 month ago tedwest

As I said or indicated on my comments about Pale Moon, Slimjet is THE best browser and it has few peers, and I'm familiar with more than a few browsers, and it's portability seems in keeping with my overall assessment... except that since I last commented, I discovered that portability is a bit of a misnomer - just last night I decided to use mt Slimjet setup on another machine, and the browser worked fine, but none of my extensions did. Worse, when I opened the extensions page none of the extensions were even listed.

So I copied the extensions again, opened the browser on the new computer, and... nothing! They copied because I saw them in explorer, but they were gone after I opened slimjet again, and I haven't been able to solve this problem. I've been backing up slimjet along with everything else, and I had the same result when I tried to run the backup copy - nothing but the browser itself worked. It appears I'll have to manually set up everything on my other computer. So from where I'm at, Slimjet is portable in that it doesn't require much setup or write to the registry, but it won't work properly when you try to use it elsewhere. If anyone has a solution, it would be most welcome.
