Thanks for the new shortcut, I usually Windows Key + R .. (two periods). One period is more specific.

I tend to use the Search Bar and the Run box interchangably. The thing I like about the ssearch bar is it will offer up several options if they are available.

I'm also fond of the Windows Key + X menu. :)

15 Useful Windows Run Commands 7 months 2 weeks ago MoisheP

Thanks for the shortcuts! Another: Win-R . (i.e. Run and a single period, or full-stop) gets Windows Explorer opened to the user's home folder.
BTW, some of these commands are more easily available from the Windows Search bar -- press Win key and type part of the name, e.g. "devmg" to open Device Manager, or "rege" for Regedit, instead of needing to enter the full application's name.

Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 7 months 2 weeks ago dark matter

Amen!

And just to address the whole FreeFileSync issue, here is a quote from their FAQ page:

➤ " Is FreeFileSync still showing an advertisement in its installer?
No, FreeFileSync is completely ad-free! Before version 10, FreeFileSync had shown a single advertisement during installation to help fund the project. Beginning with FreeFileSync 10, the project is now fully relying on donations from users to finance its ongoing expenses in software development and support."

Hi Rhiannon,
I agree with you: keeping fingers on the keyboard is much faster than moving back and forth to the mouse/touchpad.
However, if we're looking for speed and ease of use, I don't know of anything better than "Windows key"-letter. (I am using, of course, Classic Shell, not the Modern/whatever-it's-called-now interface.)
My top fifteen programs, they are only two keys away. For instance, Microsoft Word is "Windows key"-M.
As for the other hundred and some programs on this computer, they take, at the most, five keys away (they are organized in sub-menus, according to category: utilities, business apps, media, internet, etc.)
If I used Control Panel or Services on a regular basis, it would be a simple thing to add them to the two-key list.

Still, the main point of my original comment was the author expecting people to remember obscure commands like "devmgmt.msc" and "control.exe appwiz.cpl." Not my idea of intuitive, or quick and easy.

You're very welcome. It's good to have another way to get things done in Windows. :)

Thanks for your feedback. :)

We have readers with a wide range of experience and interest here at Gizmo's. Advanced users, many of us who know enough to get around, those who are new to computers, and people who have less time, experience or interest in computers.
I would find things that are interesting to everyone all the time if I figure out how. :) :) :)

I think the article's usefulness depends in part on how you use your computer or if you want tricks or tips so that it's faster and easier.
In the mouse/keyboard spectrum I lean towards the keyboard because it's so much faster and easier, not just for the more technical commands, but for things most of us probably do every day.
I use the Run box to open or run all kind of things, everything from the Word to Calculator to my email program to the Font folder. I use it to open Notepad, Wordpad, Services, change the Mouse speed and pointers and so on. I use it to open the User folder because Windows has the habit of periodically hiding the App Data folder.
There's a browse button using the Start menu access to find things as well.
It's much easier to for me to navigate that way than using a mouse and going through the Start menu. If it's not on the taskbar or the desktop (which I access using the Windows Key + D) then I usually use the run command.
The Windows Key + X is another way to access some Windows functions, like the command prompt.

There are some terms that need to be memorized, but most aren't that far off the names of what you want to use. For example, Control Panel is control. Calculator is calc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Very helpful, thank-you!
It can also be used to install major updates. For instance, the 1809 update for Windows 10 repeatedly failed on my machine. I used the Media Creation Tool to download the update, then ran the Setup.exe from Explorer. Worked beautifully, thanks to you.

Hi Rhiannon,
Thanks for your research on finding those gems which are really useful! Such as the recent "How to reinstall Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 and keep your data and programs intact." That was WONDERFUL!

This particular one, however, would be more accurately titled "15 Ways to Show Your Friends That You Are a True Geek." The article contains examples of 15 obscure commands, which the author expects readers to memorize. This is supposed to be the quick and easy way to use your computer.

FreeFileSync 7 months 3 weeks ago fred64

FreeFileSync has been my main sync program for many years. Yes a few years back you might have had to uncheck some payware app, but that has not been the case for more than a year. You should always keep an eye out for that on any software products you install anyways. (its not just the free ones that do this) .

I have found FreeFileSync reliable, fast and accurate. It has the ability to save jobs (.ffs) to a batch file which can be run on demand or scheduled by Windows. It works with USB, SD, Network or local folder(s) that windows can see (I have not tried against a cloud based folder). It provides an easy to click override of the option it selects for each file to be processed. Also, they regularly provide updates for bug fixes and enhancements. current version is 10.7.

I'm retired, and I provide a lot of folks help with their PCs (for free). That often includes setting them up with easy to use on demand ability to save their stuff to USB or network storage. Everyone I set up finds it fast and easy to do.

Great resources and great volunteers doing an excellent / unbiased job make this site a valuable resource to folks looking for solutions to all sorts of computing needs. Just because its free does not mean its inferior! In fact I've found for many solutions the free stuff is often better than a paid alternative. The one element here as opposed to other free sites is the great evaluations of the products and product categories. Its been a go to site for me for many years and I hope for many more years. How to reinstall Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 and keep your data and programs intact 8 months 52 min ago TerraEyes

This article is Incorrect. Windows 8.1 has Refresh & Reset. Windows 10 has Fresh Start which keeps the users personal files and some settings and clean installs Windows 10. Windows 10 offers 2 (actually 3 but only going to cover 2 here) types of Reset (1. keep all personal files) and Reset (2. remove everything and reinstall Windows). System Restore does not restore your system to an earlier point - it merely reverses any settings changes, programs installed/uninstalled or registry changes made since the restore point used was created. Any documents, photos, or other personal files are not changed.

Stop mobile apps from tracking your location 8 months 2 days ago rhiannon

Apps normally have a setting that gives you the option to disable location tracking, and ask to use location data when they are installed. If you're going to leave location tracking turned on and have given permission for any apps to use your location, the settings have to be changed for each app.
Myself, I knew that tracking was occurring, but I had no idea of the extent and accuracy of the tracking or how much money is being made from personal location tracking.

I signed up using a gmail account I keep for such things. I  don't recall a welcome email, but I  logged out of the site and back in.

I just created another account. I signed up using an email address, first and last, password, and username. I was logged in using that info after account creation. I reloaded the page and was apparently logged out. I went to the login screen and clicked the forgot password link. I got a reset password email immediately. I reset the password and was able to login with the new password. User name, email address and account info were all the same. If you were able to create an account but didn't get an email, try resetting the password with the account info you used. They are in beta, this looks like a hiccup.

'Find Album Info' Not Working In Windows Media Player? Try This 8 months 1 week ago rhiannon

That's a usual entry for the HOSTS file. What has been happening is that the entry that Windows Media Player uses to get album information disappears.

You can manually add the line to the HOSTS file using the directions above, or you can reset the HOSTS file using the directions at this Microsoft article - it has directions for Windows 7 and earlier, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. It may restore the entry, I haven't tested it yet, it's a recent find and I haven't had time.

I wiped everything out of my HOSTS file about 6 weeks ago on Windows 8.1 because the problem recurred and I wanted to see what would happen with no entries in the HOSTS file and Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Player hasn't had any trouble finding album data even on older music ever since. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm waiting to see if the issue repeats. I don't usually use Windows Media Player (I use VLC) but I check to see if it's retrieving album information pretty regularly.

Bitwarden: a free and secure open source password manager for all your devices 8 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

If I recall correctly, LastPass has always charged for syncing between different devices - that is, you can sync between the same type of devices for free (desktop to desktop or desktop to laptop) but to sync a mobile device with a laptop or desktop requires a premium account. The same applies to mobile - to sync Android to iOS requires premium. Android to Android or iOS to iOS is free.

LastPass doesn't function on Firefox/.Android for me. I haven't tried it in other browsers on Android after having so much trouble on Firefox. Before I stopped using it, I would log in to the web vault in Firefox and copy and paste logins and passwords to websites.

Not sure about Chrome and passwords, I don't enable any browser to store any passwords.

I believe Bitwarden was created in 2015 and released after a year of testing and development.

Have to add to the LastPass issues comments. Same here for past couple months especially since using smartphone more and
how it seems they want coin to create synch between desktop & android. Maybe LP can run independently of device with each having own database of saved passwords. Not enough time yet to determine that when can try this bw. For some reason I do think bw has been around for years? Wasn't it sort of popular even back when LP first began to expand like with Roboform? Robo had promise in beginning. Samsung also has a password saver option. And yes most of these do barf filling in on some sites. Usually those sites are either financial kind like bank or broker but sometimes it's matter of "high security" such as when MSFT or other won't allow filling in the data at certain points - happens when want to access Chrome's passwords. MS pops up wanting the Windows login name & password to verify that Chrome access. Learned to live with that. Thanks for the info.

I haven't been using that long, but I'm impressed by it's feature set, security, and developer response.
It's unlikely I'll return to LastPass. It's had issues off and on across all browsers on Windows 8.1 and 10 for some months now.

I've been reading the comments off and on at the add-ons page at Mozilla Firefox and the comments in the LastPass forums.
Many people are having issues.
I haven't seen anyone from LastPass respond to comments in places I've been keeping an eye on the comments from users. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I installed LastPass on my laptop about three years ago. It worked well until it seemed a little unstable and quirky roughly a year ago. I searched and found Bitwarden and haven't looked back since.

I've been using Bitwarden for over a year and love it - never any problems.

Best Free Audio Cutter and Joiner 8 months 3 weeks ago gifram

It seems the most of the tools listed here are either flash or need a software download. I found a great free online tool that does the job at https://www.mp3cutter.com. They also generated a waveform for the MP3 and allows changing the target audio files format. So if you want to convert your trimmed file into aac or wave this feature would come in handy. Hope this helps someone.
