Bitwarden: a free and secure open source password manager for all your devices 8 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

I haven't been using that long, but I'm impressed by it's feature set, security, and developer response.
It's unlikely I'll return to LastPass. It's had issues off and on across all browsers on Windows 8.1 and 10 for some months now.

I've been reading the comments off and on at the add-ons page at Mozilla Firefox and the comments in the LastPass forums.
Many people are having issues.
I haven't seen anyone from LastPass respond to comments in places I've been keeping an eye on the comments from users. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I installed LastPass on my laptop about three years ago. It worked well until it seemed a little unstable and quirky roughly a year ago. I searched and found Bitwarden and haven't looked back since.

I've been using Bitwarden for over a year and love it - never any problems.

It seems the most of the tools listed here are either flash or need a software download. I found a great free online tool that does the job at https://www.mp3cutter.com. They also generated a waveform for the MP3 and allows changing the target audio files format. So if you want to convert your trimmed file into aac or wave this feature would come in handy. Hope this helps someone.

Maybe under preferences or via right-click, allow buttons to be placed along the top bar, such as "rotate", etc.

To add to your list of places to get subtitles...

For Movies -
- http://www.yifysubtitles.com/

For TV shows -
- http://www.tvsubtitles.net/
- https: // www[DOT]tv-subs.net/home[DOT]html [Edit: Red-rated WOT site obfuscated]

Often times, the subtitles from these sites are not synced with the video you have. Many of the quality media players can correct for this. An alternative is the subtitle Tools website. There are many tools to edit your newly downloaded subtitle.

Thanks for your observations. :)

You do have to drill down a bit to get to rotate - Edit > Transform > Rotate.
If you have a suggestion for a feature or a fix, the developer is very responsive and will often add features, fix bugs, and help with issues.
Photopea is the work of one developer living in Prague, he's been working on it for 5 years.
He must be doing something right, 1.5 million people from several countries used Photopea in October.

Well loaded a small compressed PC image fast. Similar layout to PS. Have to read up on kb shortcuts. Needed to dig to find crop/lens correction and such less used things.
Basics are pretty much up front tho rotate is a few levels down. Main barf for me - made a couple simple changes to a .jpg file and it went from 176 kb size to 6,462 kn. Suppose could run that larger file through XnViewMP again but why. Saving as a PS file seems ok. For now sticking with PC programs. if doing any large amount of work. Guess could appeal to smartphone quickie on a few images at a time. Thanks for pointing to it.

Squoosh is a good choice. This image https://www.techsupportalert.com/files/images/pc_freeware/android_apps/S... optimized with it on this article https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/get-subtitles-your-favorite-mov... is reduced to only 24 KB, lower than the same image optimized with RIOT using the same default 75% quality. The two optimized images are of visually no difference but the one using Squoosh is smaller in size.

IrfanView is free and can convert and/or compress/resize all the mentioned formats (plus many others, including PSD, PDD, etc.) singly or in batch; and is constantly updated since.... at least 1999.

Get Subtitles For Your Favorite Movies and TV Films 8 months 3 weeks ago Jojo Yee Agree with Philo Vance. PotPlayer is a good media player with a lot of subtitle features such as browsing, saving and syncing as well as other settings. Besides some other players, both PotPlayer and VLC can pick up subtitle files automatically if they are placed in the same folder as, and named after (except the extension), the video files. Combining subtitle files with video files or muxing them without re-encoding is a good exercise to keep them tidy in a folder too :) view
Get Subtitles For Your Favorite Movies and TV Films 8 months 4 weeks ago Philo Vance

If you use PotPlayer to play your videos, which is the Gizmo's site's choice for Best Free Media Player, you don't have to touch the video file. You just put the .SRT in the same directory as the video file and make sure it has the same filename and PotPlayer will handle the display and sync of the subtitles.

Freemake Video Converter 8 months 4 weeks ago k31thw

I don't believe that this software should listed any more, and definitely should not be an Editor's Choice.

As already stated in the comments, it now puts what it calls "Branding" across the middle of the screen, throughout the whole video! And not just a discreet logo but:

Freemake.com
To convert without Freeemake logo, use Freemake Gold Pack

Trust me, that is not a logo that they put on! Makes the free version totally useless. Have uninstalled the software and will find an alternative.

As I said, this software needs to be delisted.

Microsoft re-releases the Windows 10 October 2018 Update 9 months 2 days ago rhiannon

Getting just security updates can be done manually on your own, and I agree that it should be an option. One of Microsoft's reasons for pushing Windows 10 to everyone as a SaaS was that everyone would be updated with the latest patches.
Having an option to opt out of the other parts (including the ads) would be a welome feature.

view
Microsoft re-releases the Windows 10 October 2018 Update 9 months 2 days ago rhiannon

This doesn't surprise me. There were many similar problems when Windows 10 first rolled out with forced updates and other issues. I don't think Microsoft deciding that Windows 10 would be SaaS (software as a service, being pushed to users) instead of an operating system was a good option. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Happy Turkey day to everyone who participates. :)

Being that i'm a home user, i refused the Windows 10 update on my computers. Tried to install 10 on 2 and was refused anyway. But, the September update for W 7 was set for automatic. On my new to me laptop. and i always set updates to notify me but leave install to my choice. For a day and a half the laptop slowed and froze and i wondered why? Investigated into updates and found that over a 9 hour period Windows tried to download and install September update 6500+ times. Each time rejecting the update.
After throwing out some 4 pieces of TV hardware when Windows 7 and ATI- er- AMD wouldn't update drivers after upgrading from W XP, i won't run W 10. Or AMD hardware. Dual booting Linux Mint now.
Have a Happy Turkey day, everybody!

"The bug breaks some file associations on some Win32 programs". Thanks for the warning.
Im sure the problems are understated
I always laugh when I see Microsofts descriptions of the updates - no actual benefits to productivity to make up for all the interruptions

If Microsoft had ethics, they would just provide Security updates, and not subject users to the Feature updates, most of which do not improve productivity, but can cause chaos to a well functioning computer

You can be sure that Windows 10 updates will want to upgrade at the most inconvenient time - generally on the morning you are trying to complete an important deadline.

"Hot find"?

I think the more fitting term would be, "hot mess".

Microsoft's pushing of their system-borking-updates is the worst idea they've EVER had-- and that's saying something...

If Photoshop is a problem, then so too will be most of Adobe's offerings for windows (although there is a 64 bit version of Photoshop and Illustrator). But Adobe's Acrobat Pro is already a minefield for Windows 10 - with the version issued with the widely used CS6 Suite, Acrobat 10 Pro, not working with Windows 10 at all and despite the fact that is is THE definitive .pdf file handling programme.
I find Adobe's approach baffling - they clearly have a great opportunity given the universal acceptance of pdfs as a cross platform reliable and secure docuent format, but unless on has deep pcoket one had to use a suite of small third-party apps to do anything but read pdfs. Anyway rant over, but you may need to be wary of the new update if you use slightly older Adobe products!

How to back up your Flickr photos before the free 1TB plan ends 9 months 5 days ago r0h1t

Restrictions on the free accounts will almost certainly lead to many free users leaving the site. However, if you're a serious photographer (read: have more than 1000 photos :) you may want to reconsider that decision.

For just $50/year for unlimited photos, this may still be a great deal. And if you convert to Pro before Nov 30, you're getting a 30% discount on the first year. If you don't find a good alternative soon, perhaps you can take advantage of this promotion and get yourself another 10-12 months to figure it out!

I found the reviews here useless due to being so outdated. Only the recent comments are of any help. I would like to suggest that people looking for video conversion programs take a look at " videohelp dot com ". They have been around for many years, have a very active forum and are the go-to site for all things video related IMO. Unlike the information here, videohelp contains the latest information about conversion programs with plenty of reviews and user comments.

I hope this information is helpful.

How to back up your Flickr photos before the free 1TB plan ends 9 months 1 week ago rhiannon

What does your idea of a decent or generous amount of free storage look like?

I've spent at least a few days looking into alternatives to Flickr's free plan, and there isn't much available and most have a lack of features or limitations. If you're a photographer looking to retain the quality of your images, there are limits on all the free services (such as being able to upload 20 images a week).
If you're looking for place to store photos from your mobile device there are a few more options, but all come with limitations that may or may not be acceptable. Google and imgur are looking like workable alternatives if you can live with the limits on the size of each image and video uploaded.

Google Photos is probably the most viable alternative if you're looking for the largest amount of free space and features, with these caveats:
On the free plan, if a photo is larger than 16MP, it will be resized to 16MP.
4K videos are reduced to Full HD 1080p quality.
As with any Google service, if the user base doesn't meet Google's criteria (Picasa, Reader, etc), it could be shut down at any time.
I think they'll probably keep gmail, as it allows them collect data to serve ads more effectively, so it generates income. Photos take a huge amount of storage and storage is expensive.

Imgur has these limits:
Max image size/storage:
20 MB for all non-animated GIF images and 200 MB for animated GIF images. As far as I can tell, storage is unlimited, as long as images and videos fall into those size categories. EXIF data/metadata is removed on upload, removing the parameters that can used for sorting and search.
This isn't unusual, most social media sites like Facebook and Twitter strip EXIF and metadata on image upload.

With any service, it's good to keep the TOS in mind - if there's anything in your photos that anyone takes offense at, your account can be reported and closed. Imgur is pretty good about not closing accounts as long as images are labeled NSFW.

I don't store personal data online (photos or otherwise) outside of a gmail account I use anywhere I don't want to provide my personal email address or use a temporary address, so I may not be the best person to assess what works and what doesn't on photo storage sites, feature wise. I have no experience assessing things like how well the mobile apps work (if  available), album creation and organization, tagging, sorting, sharing, hot linking, retention or stripping of EXIF data and metadata, image privacy, what file formats are allowed, and so on. A search for image hosting sites or Flickr alternatives will likely yield other servies and their features and limits.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I used to use Mp3tag when I ran a Windows system. I am now a Linux user, and can recommend Puddletag as the open-source/Linux equivalent. It does an excellent job.

For playing, organising and when necessary editing the tags of music tracks on my Android smartphone, I think Rocket Player is among the best. It is if course much more than a tag editor - it is a way of managing all aspects of your music collection

I am one of many Flickr members who - as an enthusiastic amateur photographer - enjoyed being part of that community and welcomed the availability of 1TB storage.

The reduction/removal of that free storage, and the limit of 1000 images which will be introduced, will almost certainly result in my leaving Flickr.

I can of course download my photos (and this is a helpful guide). But I would welcome any suggestions or advice on other sites which offer a similar community to Flickr and which provide a decent or generous amount of free storage. I know that Google Photos may be one option. But I believe they "shrink" uploaded images. Perhaps a review of other photo-community or photo-storage sites would be useful to other refugees from Flickr like me?

Unblock Copy and Paste in Chrome and Firefox 9 months 1 week ago rhiannon

I can't speak to the developers intent. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I understand not using the add-on because of its name.
I see that particular word many places I wouldn't expect to see it - a cookbook title comes to mind, and other titles.
I see it increasingly used in the titles of articles from mainstream sites, which surprises me.
Here in the USA it appears to have become a part of the standard vocabulary for people in certain age groups and doesn't seem to have the same assocations/connotations for those groups that it does for those of us in older age groups.

view

Why was it necessary for the addon author to name his creation with a vulgar title?
Would it not have conveyed the same message with "Don't mess with paste"?
I am sure many more would be willing to install his app with this tamer title.
Personally, I am unwilling to install with its present naming.
Have we really stooped this low for this to be acceptable?

It's not too late to get a free Windows 10 upgrade 9 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

I respect your decision not to upgrade, we all make decisions about what works for us and we're all different. Plenty of room for everybody at the table. :)
LTSB does seem to be problematic for non Enterprise users to obtain. There's some discussion about it's lack of updates being a security issue. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've seen suggestions that O&O ShutUp10 can accomplish much of what LTSB does by default (adapt your security settings, protect your privacy, control location services, control Windows Updates, not pass on your user data and diagnostics).
It's a good program and has been written up here by Rob.
If you have to upgrade at some point it might be an option.
Ads can be disabled, for now at least, and some other annoyances/issues as well.

I'm not suggesting that anyone upgrade, or not. That's up to each individual. My goal is to provide enough information so that everyone can decide what's comfortable for them and pass along any other information that might be of use.

I am saying that many of the concerns I've had about Windows 10 can be dealt with by changing settings in Windows 10 (ads) or third party software that has enough user history over time that I consider it reliable. Reliable enough that I would be comfortable moving my main system from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 if that's what I decided to do.
Microsoft has responded to some user input and made enough changes in areas of concern that those concerns aren't an issue for me anymore.

Updates are an issue for me too because of limited internet speed and data caps. Any Windows feature upgrade goes way over my data allowance and if that happens, my connection is throttled to the point that I can't easily retrieve email or load text only websites for quite a while.
My laptop has been running Windows 10 for over a year, and I haven't had any issues with updates being installed unless I choose to install them.

Other of us are happily running Windows 7 and will continue to do so for as long as possible, and that's ok too. :)

To be blunt - there is no way on god's earth that I would willingly upgrade to WIN 10 (see the probs amply and accurately described below) BUT as another poster mentioned, sooner or later you're going to have to (or go LINUX...nooooo).

This is NOT to decry this article, it is a good headsup, but I would far prefer something on how to get hold of a particular OFFICIAL version of WIN 10 -

Windows 10 LTSB

in which it is said, there are no forced "ads" AND you can stop upgrades or delay them till a time of your choosing (recommended). However obtaining this version is problematic as, it would appear, MS wants to call a halt on user's who want genuine choice on how they run their PC.

I simply cannot afford a system that may be borked with no notice by the WIN 10 policy of forced upgrades.

Thanks for those patch sites: it's good to know they exist if I ever need them.

I always take the latest updates but I am a confident user of Windows so most of the fears don't bother me. Over many years using Windows, the most intractable problem that I've had with taking the latest updates is not that an update causes me problems but that the update install does not complete and I've been stuck in a loop of repeated attempts to install.

I'm been running on 1809 since it was available for manual install. It has given me a few productivity and performance improvements which I am benefiting from. I would like to install it on my other computers but I had neglected to keep the downloaded files so I'm stuck waiting for Microsoft to re-release it.

After I installed 1809, I was immediately able to confirm that I hadn't lost any files because I use FreeFileSync to keep a local (i.e. on the same computer) copy of my files. All that I needed to do was to run the sync job to confirm that no files needed copying.

view
It's not too late to get a free Windows 10 upgrade 9 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

Windows 10 seems to be having more issues than previous versions for a variety of reasons.
Microsoft pulled the latest feature upgrade (1809) not long after it was released. It's still up in the air as to when it will be rolled out. Some issues with the 1809 feature upgrade include the deletion of personal files (documents and photos) and blue screen errors.
The Windows 7 monthly rollup was causing blue screen errors, so issues aren't confined to Windows 10. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is the reason I wait to install patches and feature upgrades (the Windows 10 twice a year upgrade that contains new features and fixes) until the issues have been worked out. I tend to run a release or two behind the current feature update for that reason. I've done the same thing with every version of Windows I've used, starting with Windows 3.1. I wait until new updates and upgrades get the bugs worked out and then install them.

The monthly Office and Windows patches don't usually cause much trouble and this would be a good time to install them since the 1809 release is on hold.

My favorite places to keep up with what's going on with Windows is Woody Leonhard's column over at Computerworld, and Susan Bradley's Master Patch list at Woody Leonhard's website. If you want to know anything about the patches for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Server 2012, Windows 7 and Office, whether they are safe to install, any issues being tracked, their status and what they are patching, Susan is the best person to check with for the latest status of Microsoft product patches.

I have said for a long time, to avoid mandatory Windows updates. Similarly upgrading your current computer to Windows 10 has a lot of risk, for not much true benefit/productivity improvement
To show that my perpetual caution regarding Windows is well founded:

Google: 'Microsoft pulls Windows 10 October 2018 Update'

Microsoft has stopped distributing its latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update.
“We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” says Microsoft on its support site for Windows Update.
Microsoft has struggled with the quality of Windows updates recently.
The company delayed its Windows 10 April 2018 Update earlier this year over Blue Screen of Death issues

I haven't tested it in Windows 10 on all my programs, I like Wizmouse because it works in windows that don't normally support scrolling. If the Windows 10 built in feature will scroll in windows that don't support scrolling I would use that. I'll re-enabled Wizmouse and see if Windows 10 supports scrolling in the same windows.

You can disable Wizmouse from the tray icon, just click on the icon and uncheck Enabled. That will leave the Windows 10 function active.

I used WizMouse for years in the past but never paid attention to the fact that it must have stayed with my different computers and many updates and upgrades. It is installed on my present computer and I could have updated it but checked my settings in Windows 10 and it's already turned on there so one or the other or both must be controlling this function. Does that make any sense? Is there any benefit to using one or the other or both? Will one defer to the other as the dominant application? :-)

It's not too late to get a free Windows 10 upgrade 9 months 2 weeks ago Australia

If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8, and you are happy with your current hardware and software, I recommend you do not upgrade
There are no productivity benefits to be gained to offset the incompatibilities that can easily arise
Remember that Windows 10 will insist on upgrading you to the latest 2018 version
Microsoft wont then provide you a guarantee that your current hardware or software WONT STOP WORKING COMPLETELY
Have some hardware from 2014 that works perfectly? A new operating system four years later can easily render that printer for example, unusable
Hardware manufacturers want you to buy the latest hardware product, and often do NOT provide drivers for your old software or hardware.
Also assume that the update may erase some of tour personal files and documents. This may not happen, but again Microsoft cannot guarantee against loss of your existing photos, files and data. So before upgrading search your entire C drive for any personal files and make a copy of all these files
You have been warned !
Windows 10 is the future so we all will be using it soon enough. Just upgrade safely without regrets.

view
It's not too late to get a free Windows 10 upgrade 9 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

Those are valid concerns.
A few things...if you decided to upgrade, Windows 10 has a rollback utility that lets you roll back to your previous operating system as long as you rollback within ten days. Most, but not all, rollbacks go smoothly.
Creating a disk image before you make changes is a good idea. Backing up device drivers is also a good idea, and checking the availability of drivers (especially for peripherals like printers) for any new operating system before changing or upgrading is a good practice.

Many vendors, particularly printers for some reason, don't update drivers for older models. This has been the case with other Windows version upgrades in the past, so it's not a new issue.
Microsoft isn't responsible for driver updates and operating system compatibility, it's always been the responsiblity of the vendor to make sure their drivers are compatible with any operating system that they make drivers for. It's on us to check if there are compatible drivers when changing or upgrading operating systems. For example, many vendors don't have drivers for Linux, which is one reason I haven't migrated.
There were no drivers for my printer when Windows 7 came out and there were never driver updates to Windows 7 for that printer. It was get a new printer or not upgrade.

You can control what updates you want to get using Windows Update MiniTool. You can also defer major or version upgrades in Windows 10 settings.
You can turn upgrades on and off and set some connections to metered using Windows 10 Update Switch.
You can block the ads that appear in Explorer and other places.

I'm not suggesting that anyone upgrade or not upgrade - I'm saying there are tools to manage most of the issues in Windows 10 that are problematic for most of us. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: Windows 10 has a history of problems with updates - everything from making systems unusable to personal data deletion. Best practice is not to install the twice a year version upgrade until the bugs are worked out. We are the beta testers for Microsoft now - they get some feedback from the Insiders program but most problems are worked out after the upgrade is issued and the issues surface for many users. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
