I checked the site and their Discord server as I was writing the article. From their Discord server FAQ:

What operating systems do you support? Windows 7 and up.

I didn't find any mention of other operating systems on any of the other channels I looked at.

Download Flash Games to Play on Your Desktop Before Flash Disappears in 2020 3 days 2 hours ago MidnightCowboy The FAQ and readme links both state: Windows 7 and up, as thoroughly updated as possible. Also listed are some requirements for .NET and others should your installation of Flashpoint not work. I see no mention of Mac compatibility. Maybe you could achieve functionality with Linux by installing Windows 7/10 in a VM but because of how this app operates I wouldn’t like to guarantee success. :) MC - Site Manager. view

I think most websites understand that there is a tolerance threshold that they can't surpass with regards to ads. There is little point in being excessive with ads if the end result will be a decline in traffic. Many years ago I would frequent a website called "Experience Project". That site basically self destructed because it became so intrusive with ads that members simply stopped coming. I've noticed that some websites now fight back against the ad blocking by darkening the page and denying users from looking at content until the ad blocker is de-activated. I find myself using the handy Stylebot addon quite a bit now. It allows users to arrange the page layout to their liking and selectively hide ads or banners as needed. It probably wouldn't appeal to folks who prefer something with a global setting but for web pages that are frequently visited it's ideal.

Thanks for whitelisting us, it's very much appreciated.

I'm with you about YouTube creators, that's the exact thing that caused me to write the article. :)
It was "Wait! I want to see that! Don't cover it up! I really want to see the end, hmmmm, there's got to be a way to stop those ads from covering up the ending".

There is some data about people that measures what types of advertising people are more and less tolerant towards. I'm not sure how accurate the data on the site is but overall it appears reflective of what I see and hear and what I experience, though I'm no expert.
https://www.vieodesign.com/blog/new-data-why-people-hate-ads

I don't know that I can draw a line without being arbitrary to one extent or another. Smaller sites like Gizmo's and ghacks I whitelist and I click on ads because it helps the sites continue to function - as advertising models change, these sites are hit hard. They provide a service I consider valuable. The ads are not intrusive and don't use up the limited bandwidth and data caps attached to my internet connection.
Overall, on other sites, I block autoplay across the board. I block pop ups and pop unders. I block most overlays because they prevent me from seeing content unless I take an action. The rest I'm mostly ok with.

I agree. There's no good solution that works for all parties. I wish there was.
I whitelist what I can, when I can without allowing ads to chew through limited bandwidth and having to wait 5-10 seconds for sites to load.
High speed internet hasn't made it to where I live, and it's not looking good for arrival anytime soon. Meanwhile, advertising uses more and more bandwidth as ads get bigger and flashier. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The person who complains about ads is obviously not using a blocker and therefore not having any negative impact on revenue that the website owner might obtain. It's a completely different situation from a website saying "please don't disrupt our ad revenue with a blocker but here is how you can block ads elsewhere to disrupt their revenue.

How to Block YouTube End Screen Video Ads in Your Browser 1 week 2 days ago crosseyedlemon

To what degree an ad is intrusive seems to me a rather subjective determination dependent on who you ask. Everyone has a different tolerance level in this regard. As for your suggestion that site profitability be used as a metric for determining when and when not to block, the obvious question is how do you draw a line there without it being arbitrary.

view
How to Block YouTube End Screen Video Ads in Your Browser 1 week 2 days ago rhiannon

You are right, we do ask that people whitelist our site (and any other sites they want to support or like).
Not disable their ad blocker, but whitelist the site so ads are viewable on that site only.
The only income this site has is from ads - it's what keeps the lights on.
If enough people block ads on this site, the site will shut down.

I reconcile this by allowing ads that aren't intrusive on most sites and blocking the ones that are intrusive. That allows income to be generated by ads that I don't mind viewing.
In this case, I'm not saying block all the ads on YouTube. I'm providing a way for people to watch the video they came to see, all the way to the end. Maybe I'm off base, but YouTube is a site that hosts videos.
There's a reasonable expectation that visitors can watch videos on YouTube where the pages contain advertising until a video ends. It's not a reasonable expectation for a video that's on a site that hosts videos and shows advertising to have the last roughly 5 to 20 seconds of the video covered up by a different set of ads. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Aside from that aspect, ad blockers cut off an attack vector since malware can be delivered through site advertising.
Even reputable sites that I would whitelist have delivered malware through advertising - look at what happened at Forbes.

Gizmo's ads do nothing to intrude on your use of the website. And it's bottom line is a bit different than YouTube's--wouldn't you think?

I seem to recall that when this site last asked members for donations a request was also made that ad blockers be disabled....yet here you are providing instructions on how to block ads elsewhere. I'm not sure how you reconcile doing that.

Stop Gmail From Adding The Important Label To Your Email 1 week 4 days ago David Bishop

Rhiannon, thank you for that comprehensive reply.

I've double checked the settings in Brave and in Chrome, and they are the same in both browsers - and as you specify:
"Important" set to hide
"No markers" checked
"Don't override filters" checked
Categories - only "Primary" checked
Type of inbox: "Default"
I couldn't save any changes because there were none!

So I'm baffled - and just the tiniest bit put out. I've also had another look at my phone and iPad, and every message in the inbox is also in the "Important" box, and a good few I thought were deleted or otherwise labelled. I like to keep my inbox as clean as possible (retaining only current items) and so either delete unwanted messages or label them.

I'll read the Google support article when I get a moment. In the meantime, I appreciate your efforts.

Our system doesn't allow posting of graphics here in the comments.

Have you checked (in a web browser) to make sure that your Gmail account Settings/Labels :"Important" is set to hide, and under Settings/Inbox "No markers" is checked in the Importance markers section and that under the Filtered mail section the "Don't override filters" is checked are still intact? In the categories, do you have anything other than Primary checked?

I ask because when I went to look at mine the setting under Importance markers had been changed so that the "Use my past actions to predict which messages are important" was checked when it had been unchecked for many months. If you use the Gmail web interface it's possible something got changed. I don't access gmail via their web interface often and haven't made changes to my account for a long time, so I'm not sure how the setting got changed. I access gmail via a third party email client on my desktop and via Blue Mail in Android so no I'm nowhere near the Settings.

At the top of Settings/Inbox, what type of Inbox do you have selected? I use Default. If you're using Priority, switch to Default and see if that makes a difference.

Don't forget to Save Changes at the bottom of the page (says the voice of experience).

You can also access the Settings/Labels area via the left side of the Gmail interface Inbox, under the More section, click on Manage labels and you'll get the same section as under Settings.

These settings can't be changed using the Gmail app, it has to be done via the web interface from a browser. I don't know if Brave browser would make a difference but you might want to access Gmail account settings via another browser to make sure they are the same in both. Stranger things have happened.

That's all I can think of at the moment, since the changes are made using a web browser and not the app they should apply across the board to your gmail account. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why the labels aren't showing up in your Notebook and are showing in mobile is very strange. This is all I can think of at the moment.

This Google support article has more information but the thing that caught my eye is searching for messages marked Important and if there are any, changing the label. Just a thought.  ¯\_(シ)_/¯

Hello Gizmo's,

I love your site and freeware. So, I wanted to see if you would consider having me edit a category. Unfortunately, I ran into a few problems.
On the "Gizmo's Freeware Needs You!" page: https://www.techsupportalert.com/we-need-you.htm it states "What's involved? Just watch the following video:" There was no video.

I found the contact link at the bottom of the page: https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/contact-us.htm It states "Contact' 'Gizmo's Freeware can be contacted using the site contact form."

Clicking the contact form link led to: https://www.techsupportalert.com/contact This was a duplicate of the homepage. There was no contact form.

Please let me know what to do about this. Thank you.

Best regards,

Hello Rhiannon

Thank you for your quick response. By the way, I had drafted a response to yours, but it disappeared as I was about to post it, and I’ve only just had a chance to try again.

To answer your question, I use two devices linked to my main device. The main device is an HP Pavilion Notebook running Windows 10 using the Brave browser. As mentioned, in Gmail on the Pavilion (Brave) I have disabled the “important” label. I tried to paste a screenshot below for you to have a look at in case I’ve got anything wrong, but it doesn't show. (Perhaps your site doesn't permit this?)

I have two devices linked to the HP notebook, an iPad (iOS v9.3.5) and a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone running Android 6.0.1. Both these devices show the “important” folder. When I looked at it on the iPad, it tried to load “more than 1000” messages, so I hurriedly closed it!

I’d appreciate any help you can give.

I'm assuming you're talking about the certificate issue with Mozilla that caused all add-ons to be disabled and labeled as Legacy last night and today?
They haven't rolled out a fix yet for everyone, and not everyone is impacted.

I came across an add-on that fixed the issue at Hacker News/ycombinator. As far as I can tell it can be left in place indefinitely. I recommend reading the thread and deciding whether to install it or not. I checked what was being changed and I'm ok with the mechanics of the fix.
I don't have studies enabled, and at this point, current information is saying if you enable studies it could take 6 hours to work unless you change the interval that Firefox checks for updates (every 6 hours).

LastPass Not Working in Firefox? It's Not Just You 2 weeks 13 hours ago rhiannon

There is an issue with Firefox and a certificate. Not everyone is impacted by the issue and fixes are rolling out.
You can read about it here:
https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2019/05/04/update-regarding-add-ons-in-f...

or Mozilla's Twitter:
https://twitter.com/firefox

I used this add-on at Hacker News/ycombinator and it worked for me.
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19826903

I would read the thread and make your own decision whether to install the add-on or wait for Mozilla to roll out a fix for everyone. I'm fine with what the add-on does and the mechanics underlying the changes it makes.YMMV.

And of course, feel free to use Edge or any browser that you choose.

Personally, no browser is perfect, they've all had problems more or less severe over the years.
When Mozilla became aware of what happened they let people know and started on a fix and are keeping people updated.

If you check the article above, please note that I've added a site with directions on using Chrome extensions in Edge, so if there's a favorite Chrome extension you can now use it with Edge.

You can also consider a fork of Firefox such as Waterfox or Pale Moon.

How to Opt Out of Data Broker Sites 2 weeks 5 days ago rhiannon

Whether you want to limit the information on you that's available or aren't concerned with your data available is a personal choice for most of us.
For some of us, having the data available for anyone who wants to pay for it can have a high price. Women are often at risk in cases of domestic violence and stalking (though it's not limited to gender). Having your current personal information (which often contains information about family and friends) available for sale to anyone who wants to pay for it has very real consequences.

Some or most of these companies have policies in place for these types of situations - and you still have to contact each of the data brokers and request your data be removed. That presumes you know your personal data is being collected, can identify which data brokers are collecting it, know how to contact them, and have the time to request removal from all of them.
Having requested removal of my data from several of these services in the course of researching this article I'm having nightmares of the endless CAPTCHA's that would appear trying to remove myself from all of them.

I know someone who has never had a computer, has never been on the internet, and doesn't have a data plan with their cell phone. They exist in public records, and there's a ton of information about them and their family and probable acquaintances on the internet (I checked). I'm just saying that not using the internet will not stop your personal information from being collected. :)

view
How to Opt Out of Data Broker Sites 2 weeks 5 days ago gruff

Personally, I'm not that concerned with my data being out there. It would take far too much time and effort to prevent my data from being collected. Basically I'd probably have to quit using the Internet ... which I refuse to do. But I do object and object strongly when one of these data pigs begins to harass me and then refuse to remove my data ... like MyLife did for many months. I finally sent them a long email threatening in detail how I'd take them to court in my state and sue them for invasion of privacy, harassment and other assorted charges, noting that Arizona loves to chop down data hogs with huge awards. At that point they removed all my data and I've not heard from them since.

How to Opt Out of Data Broker Sites 3 weeks 4 hours ago rhiannon

I understand your point. It's possible that some of the services are on the shady side, but they wouldn't last long, and in this field, trust is everything if you want to stay in business. There may be some fly by nights that come and go, but overall the larger services are interested in staying in business and most seem to take security and personal data seriously.

I haven't checked thoroughly just yet, but I believe that joindeleteme and deleteme are the same company - that would be Abine. They've been around a long time, I would trust them with my data and to handle keeping up with data reappearances if I went the paid route. I don't mind doing it on my own, and have been doing so a few years. I rarely see my name come up in most data broker sites when I check back. FamilyTreeNow has deleted and then published my data a twice so far, I keep an eye on them.
Abine has developed one of my favorite add-ons, Blur, which provides masked address to sites that want an email address. It stores them in your account so you can reuse them again and keep track of what any given masked address was used for.

They also provide a service that generates temporary, one time use credit card numbers for the dollar amount you specify that can be used anywhere so your credit/debit card data isn't used at a site.
I don't have a need for any of their premium services, so I stay with their free service.

Yes, they store your credit card data, so does privacy.com, which also provides single use credit card numbers.

I'm familiar with the privacy.com people from some years ago, when they first started talking about creating privacy.com.
I trust both services with my data. That said, they've been vetted by people who know much more than I do whose judgement I trust implicitly - they've gotten thumbs up and use both services.

I encourage anyone to perform due diligence before making any choices or decisions when handing over critical personal data - by that I mean critical financial data as that has the largest impact if it's breached.
Don't take my word for it, check out any service you might consider using so you have first hand, current information.

Speaking of breaches, I keep wondering where the data from the Equifax breach is. To my knowledge it hasn't surfaced anywhere, which is unusual. It's one of those things I wonder about on a regular basis. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

view
How to Opt Out of Data Broker Sites 3 weeks 5 hours ago gruff

I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid, but these 'deleteme' type sites that charge you $100 and up to delete your information on all other sites that may have your data ... they remind me of the old senior scams that conned old people who'd been conned by other companies by promising to get their money back for them. That con ripped off billions till the Feds shut them down a while back.

Download or Listen to Boston Public Library's 48,000+ 78rpm Collection 3 weeks 1 day ago kilgore54

This is AWESOME! Here's why...

The year was 1965. I was 12 years old and about to start the 5th grade. My parents bought an old hand-cranked Victrola at an auction. It had about 100 78 RPM records with it. That summer I played, and played, and played those records and there were so many of them that I loved. A few years later we moved out west and they sold everything, including the old Victrola and the records at an auction. As I recall, they got $1.50 for the lot.

Present day: Thanks to this article and the link I went to the Boston Public Library site and got to here so many of the old tunes from my childhood. For a short time today I was twelve years old again. It made me sad because my parents are gone but it also made me very happy to hear these songs. Thank you so much!

NoScript Extension Is Now Available for Google Chrome 3 weeks 2 days ago rhiannon

Yep I'm a lady, you guessed right. :)
Thank you for your kind words.

When I searched I used the chrome web store link in the apps menu on the bookmarks bar.

I searched againg using the same steps you did, and I'm confused. I thought chrome://extensions/ displayed the extensions that are installed on the browser?

I uninstalled it from Chrome so searching for it using the steps you mention gave no result, I installed it again and a search using the same search method displays the NoScript extension. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dear Ms. rhiannon [or Mr.? Why do I believe you are a lady? But I do... ;-) ]

Yes, it works if I copy and paste the link address into Chrome. It does not work if I search from within Chrome by going through Chrome's three dot menu, More tools, Extensions as viewable:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/108os62Sd-sN9-m7QiC2SdKZk3DEdFbT4/view?usp=sharing

Thanks for the amazing amount of time and effort you put into all this.

Huh, that's puzzling.
The link to the NoScript extension in the article resolves to the Chrome web store here:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/noscript/doojmbjmlfjjnbmnoijecmcbfeoakpjm

And a search for NoScript in the Chrome web store brings up NoScript, Strip Nag Screen and Script Safe as results.

NOT good here, sorry.
Running Chrome version 74.0.3729.108 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Win 10 Home version 1803 (OS Build 17184.706).
Searching for NoScript (or noscript aso.) in Extensions persistently gives this result: "No search results found".

It's not available in the Microsoft Store as an extension right now. I haven't had time to check if it uses crx format and if it does, if extensions not listed in the store can be installed by dragging and dropping into the extension area the way it has been possible with Google Chrome (has to be done in Developer mode). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Near the very end of the "Terms and Conditions/Privacy" article, it states you can access/change your info but must email them (at the provided address) as to how.
Please note that "Netline" (TradePub or any of their other branded websites) have some items you cannot opt-out short of deleting your account, which can only be done by emailing them.

Get Microsoft's Edge Browser for Windows 7 and 8 3 weeks 5 days ago Krunk

Yeah, I searched for, and found IE where they hid it after moving to Win10 years ago. The only feature I initially liked in Edge was you can create a Start Menu tile from a webpage. On the other hand, I'll frequently drag a URL from the address bar to my Desktop to create a temporary shortcut using the other browsers, but weirdly, Edge won't let you do that.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm a Firefox user since they were a twinkle in Mozilla's eye years and years ago. I use other browsers but Firefox is my day in, day out get stuff done browser.

Internet Explorer is based on the Trident engine, earlier versions of Edge are based on the EdgeHTML engine. It was developed by Microsoft for Edge. It's mostlyis Trident with updated code. The new version of Edge is based on Chromium, which is the engine that Google Chrome is based on, as well as Opera and Vivaldi.
The new version of Edge is basically Chrome with some things added and some removed. It performs much like Chrome.

There isn't anything particular about the new version of Edge that appeals to me other than it's much faster than Internet Explorer and previous versions of Edge. I use few Microsoft services so the features that integrate into that ecosystem aren't an attraction. I like the use of Material Design in Edge. There are some extensions that I like and use that are available for Edge. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If yanyone wants Internet Explorer 11, it's included in Windows 10 by default. Directions on how to access it are here.
I'm including it because I've been asked more than once why Internet Explorer was replaced by Edge because someone wants IE11 back. It's still there.

Things seem very murky right now about Windows 7.
Microsoft has stated that they are considering paid support for Windows 7 past the end of life date, but I haven't found anything solid or recent enough that I would say yes or no.
It's likely from what little Microsoft has said that they would limit paid support to Enterprise versions of Windows 7.

I think they are offering Edge for Windows 7 and 8.1 because they would prefer people run the newest iteration of Microsoft's browser, from a security standpoint it makes sense.

rhiannon, I'm mostly a Firefox user but tried Edge early on in Windows10 and was never captivated by it. I know it's been improved since then, but is there anything in particular you like about Edge?

Is this some kind of signal that MS is going to extend the lifespan of Windows 7 or is it because if it works on 8.1 it will work on 7?

Get Customer Service Phone Numbers for Most Large Companies 3 weeks 5 days ago rhiannon

As mentioned in the article, yes, these sites are primarly for the United States.
If the businesses listed have customer service for their offices outside the country, the ones I saw had listed them (most often the UK).

I'm not aware of any similar services for countries outside the United States, if you run across one for any country I would be happy to add it to the article.

Both these potentially useful websites seem to be designed primarily for the United States. What services do they provide for other countries, and/or are there similar sites for other countries?
