PotPlayer has removed software decoding of HEVC videos, and only supports hardware decoding as of this moment. To enable

Preferences --> Filter Control --> Video Decoder --> HEVC: click the three dots. This opens a video configuration window and under Available Video Decoders, at H265/HEVC, change it from "Built-in FFmpeg Decoder (Recommended)" to "FFmpeg64.dll"

Am using LAV filters as audio/video splitter for PotPlayer anyway.

Windows 10 presents a host of new issues to deal with.
To clarify, are you saying that running this utility has caused Firefox to stop updating?

Have you checked in Services to make sure that Windows Update is enabled?

You might want to try PatchMyPC to keep up with updates for a wide variety of common and popular programs.

It doesn't have anything to do with any Windows updates but covers many other programs.

I had great faith that perhaps this utility could fix what Microsoft's agents have failed to do. I've been unable to update a PC at my church for a couple of years since it last installed a Windows Update. After repeated chat sessions to Microsoft and allowing the agents access which all failed to correct the problem when they tired something that broke their connection. They weren't able to reconnect and left me hanging proving even MS has no idea of how to fix what they broke. I have no other option but to wipe the drive and and reinstall another copy of clugy Windows10 from scratch.

Unfortunately, after downloading it and running it successfully, when I tried to check for updates, it still fails. Even Firefox couldn't update - I had to find and install the complete Firefox 48Mb download to update it but at least that was successful.

Fix WU does one thing. It will re-register a total of 114 .dll,  ocx and .ax files which are needed for the proper functioning of Windows Updates. That's it. That's all it does. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

view
Fix Windows Update Issues Using This Free Portable Utility 5 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

The utility isn't a registry cleaner and doesn't do the same thing CCleaner does.
There's no way to compare them that I can think of since they aren't the same class or category of software and don't do the same things.

view
Fix Windows Update Issues Using This Free Portable Utility 5 months 3 weeks ago rhiannon

As far as I can tell, it doesn't diagnose errors or issues.
It re-registers files that are part of Windows Update.
There's no log needed, since it does one thing, and one thing only - it re-registers the same fixed set of files every time it's run.
A log would tell you that the 114 files were re-registered. It's the equivalent of the message that pop ups when the files are re-registered that the process was successful.
To the best of my knowledge, re-registering the files doesn't cause an issue if the files hadn't become un-registered.

You can contact the developer and ask for a list of the 114 files that get re-registered and find out more here:

What is going on with TechSupportAlert? It used to be the very best resource for checking out different freeware offerings but these days all the reviews I go to are years out of date. Not sure that you'd remember me Ian but my name is Jim and I live in Australia. You and I used to occasionally converse via email, back in the day when your good self and Clif Sipe (aka Clif Notes) were the freeware gurus. Many years ago.

It's a shame to see what was once such a valuable resource go so far downhill.

Hmmmm that's a very good question.
If I understand it correctly, the files that get re-registered are system files - .ocx files are ActiveX files and .dll files are Dynamic Link Library files and are usually found in the Windows directory. They are registered/unregistered using Regsvr32.exe via the command line.
The Registry is a database that stores data related to configuration settings, software and preferences and is accessed via the regedit command. I used both trying to fix the issue I had.

I don't know enough to be sure if the files that are re-registered using Fix WU make any changes to registry keys related to Windows Update.
Some of the sites I checked to get an overview of Fix WU mentioned that it didn't make changes in the registry but didn't give a basis for the statement.
If anyone knows more about this please feel free to add some clarity. In the meanwhile, I've removed the line until more is known. :)

In two immediately adjacent sentences you write
"Fix WU was designed to repair many Windows Update issues by re-registering a total of 114 .dll, ocx and .ax files that Windows Update needs to function properly"
and
"Fix WU doesn’t make any changes to the Windows Registry".

I am more than confused. I - maybe falsely - think that "registering files" actually is making entries in the Windows Registry?

That's wonderful, I hope it does the trick. If not and you're comfortable editing the registry there's an entry that sometimes gets corrupted. A search for Windows Update registry keys shoud bring up the specifics. I had both issues. I corrected the registry key and ran this utility and all is well. :)

You're so welcome. Using an add-on like uBlock Origin or Ghostery takes care of most tracking,
I also use an add-on/extension called Decentraleyes and another called ClearURLs as another layer, available on Chrome & Firefox.
Zemana is the only key logger blocker I know of, though there are probably more. It used to be free, now it's paid software.

At this point, most anti-virus/security programs will detect and block keyloggers. I don't know if they block the keyloggers that some corporations use to track what their employees are typing, though at that level security is probably handled by IT staff.
I use Social Fixer on Facebook.

I support a number of people (I live in a mature adult community) and I do not get paid for my services, its volunteer. About a year ago, TeamViewer determined that I must be commercial; Im presuming because I had about 35 computers in my access list (7 of these systems were mine). They now limit my connection sessions to 5 minutes, with a wait time of 10 minutes between each session.

This was a wonderful tool and I miss it but Im not willing to pay for a licence to support users I do not charge. And I dont want to absorb the price of this volunteer work.

I dumped TeamViewer and now use google remote desktop for clients that have a google account or I use the Windows Quick Assist. I no longer have the ability to access unattended but thats not a problem since now I just require the users to be there when I access the systems. A bit inconvenient for them but thats what they have to deal with for no charge to them.

Used to use TeamViewer, was great. Now its limited to 5 minutes per session if you dont pay. I dumped it.

2 alternatives that Ive tried: Google remote desktop if you are just going into your system remotely or have a google pw on the receiving machine. Smooth operation once you get in. But doesnt work well for support because there still are a lot of people that dont have a Google account.

The other comes standard in the OS from MS: Quick Assist. Its a 2 way auth tool that gives you total control of the users screen. Ive used it several times with very new Win 10 users and with a bit of coaching, get in with no problem. Note that the user must input a code and then in the 3rd part of auth, they must allow you access, so you cant use this without user assistance at the keyboard. Its a me, you, me, you thing. Dont know when it started showing up in Win 10, but its in the latest 2 versions. Not sure about older ones.

Try Quick Assist, its working for me.

This is a great (and currently relevant) topic. I've provided "support" to many family members over the years and have tried a bunch of different products. For our small business and home we use Zoho Assist which is free for "on demand" support which allows you to connect to another computer or the other user to connect to you. It's an enterprise level product that has worked well for me. Many of our business clients have Apple laptops and desktops and I can connect to them for training as easily as a windows computer.

I use several ad/popup blockers, and don't see any of those ads. But, I agree that more options for keeping informed and up-to-date is good.

The textual info at the bottom is nice and the page is loaded with tons of charts and graphs filled with all the same info found on the Johns Hopkins dashboard. Otherwise, even with a basic popup blocker running, the site is riddled with ads. And rather than be convenient and tidy, the informational charts and graphs are spread out on a long scrolling, bright white page. The aesthetics alone are a huge turn off for me. But, the more options we have to find this information, the better in my opinion.

In addition to the Johns Hopkins dashboard and nCoV2019 version, here is another I've found to be worthwhile.
