The free VPN is only available on Developer version 38 of Opera. It is not quite a VPN but a proxy that only protect your browsing not other apps.
I tried it out and discovered that after working initially, it left me out to dry while streaming online watching the Star Trek Enterprise series.
It reverted without warning to my IP addresses, and despite giving the green light (it is actually blue) on the browser bar.
I've been running it on a win7 machine for a couple of weeks now with no problems at all (in fact it's so good I am seriously considering making Opera my default browser). It was interesting that when I tried to access the Pirate Bay via Chrome it gave me a dns fault and Opera did exactly the same until I enabled the VPN when it loaded quite happily. It's amazing how many sites are blocked to UK users!
Extreme left of the address box - it's usually greyed out if it's not being used. Just click on the "VPN" letters and it will offer you a choice of 3, USA, Canada or Germany.
I tried this and all except one ip address/location site correctly identified me and weren't fooled by the "VPN" for one moment. Also the browser has been designed for fat fingers on a mobile device with large fonts and a huge amount of white space. This is fine for a phone but it's hardly anything I would want to use on a pc at work.
Yes, I'd endorse the portable version too. At first I had the installed version, but it was buggy. Hovering over its system tray icon was like molasses sometimes. Ever since I switched to the portable version it's been fine.
I have been using Ditto for many months before now. I do not understand the problems others are having. I use Win 7 home version and it works fine and I now could not bear to be without it now. I mark a URL link, Control C and it's there for when I need it 30 minutes later.
I cannot tell it's loaded until I want something and it's there for me. Get it.
I've been using Ditto for ages myself, but Arsclip is indeed quite good too. :) Ditto uses less RAM (14MB 42MB... Every MB counts if you want performance!), but Arsclip is much more user-friendly in config and usage (human-readable and well-structured config, easier image handling)... I'm gonna try Arsclip for a while now!
Edit: after another investigation into Ditto, I'd say Ditto wins again. :) You just gotta figure out the names of the types (CF_DIB and such is not very informative) and disable/ignore the tons of features you don't use (network sharing and such). The killer feature that made me go back was search-as-you-type, which Arsclip doesn't have.
I used to use ArsClip -- which IS excellent (and the name is from ArsTechnica) but for some reason I ran into issues with it and my workflow a few years back and started looking for alternatives.
The one that won my personal battle and became my clipboard manager of choice is Clipboard Help and Spell (from DonationCoder, at http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/clipboardhelpandspell/index... )
It lets me sort various categories of stored clips into subsets and supports images too.
I agree with "oblivion" that Clipboard Help and Spell is the best! I explored a very large number of clipboard utilities and was amazed at the capabilities of Clipboard Help and Spell.
It's especially great if you copy or cut some text and open a MS Office program to paste the text into. Microsoft arrogantly clears the clipboard upon opening. This utility allows you to get it back. One improvement might be to put the contents back into the clipboard upon opening the Office document.
Use to use Yankee Clipper because it did everything I needed with managing both text and images when clipped. Switched to Ditto because it does just about everything without the complexity. Simply install it and forget it.
Yes, Notepad++ is free and it has a lot of plugins, however, if you dare it to open a very large file, say a 1.5 GB file, it will absolutely refuse to do that, something you can do perfectly with EmEditor with no problems.
@Rydeck:
You write "...Zeman Antimalware' complains...".
Excuse me, but what and who is Zeman Antimalware?
Have you checked the Em web site/-page in Mywot.com?
Did you download the Installer or the portable version?
Have you checked the downloaded file with VirusTotal.com?
These are all things you might have done before posting the likely false negative from your, pardon me, exotic Antimalware program.
It should have said "Zemana". Noted to be riddled with false positives and about as much use therefore as a paper bag in a thunderstorm. :D MC - Site Manager.
Why should he do that?
Maybe that is a "feature" if you run the OS with only 2GB of RAM. ;-)
Just use the better program that can do that without choking.
Actually, I work in a datawarehouse environment in a very big company where sometimes we need to check text files of that size or even bigger before we load them to their corresponding tables, and believe it or not, yes, I have done that with emeditor with an old machine with only 2 GB RAM, that's why I discovered emeditor.
This program has interesting possibilities, though I found it a bit quirky.
But the day after creating a couple of interesting story boards, the application would not load them--kept receiving a Java error. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling both the program and Java, but no luck. Based on the website, this seems to be a work in progress, so maybe I'll give it try when a newer version is available.
Aside from a rapid fire You-tube video that was all fluff Showbox didn't actually show me anything. If they can't even bother to offer a FAQ on the home page I'm really not too interested in registering. They don't even tell you what file limits exist or what formats are supported. I'm pretty sure there are better options out there for those looking to create videos.
I wish there was more info on the home page, too, but scrolling to the bottom of it there is a support link that takes you to some FAQs and one of the basic ones shows a basic tutorial. It could be a lot better--a lot of stuff is gone over way to quickly for me so I have to rewind quite often, but it is solid info, not fluff and you don't have to register to see it.
After watching the tutorial a couple of things strike me. Once you finish a video the only options are to publish it somewhere online--no way is mentioned to save it to your computer. Which kind of makes sense with my other thought--the app is well named because it is really just for producing shows, not any other simpler kinds of video. If anything, production values are overdone.
Thanks for posting--I'll keep it in mind, but don't feel a need to register for it right now.
Hi Tim,
I don't post desktop wallpapers for any given size, instead I do my best to find wallpapers that have a lot of resolutions, including dual monitor, Android, iPhone, etc.
There are some good dual monitor websites out there (mandolux comes to mind), and some sites with good dual monitor sections. The Windows Personalization site has jumped on the bandwagon with some panoramic (dual monitor) wallpapers.
I have dual monitors myself and am usually on the lookout for good wallpapers. :)
Amazing and vibrant – that’s what I would like to call it. The brilliant combination of bright yellow crocus with green background looks as a perfect reflection of the approaching summer. The wallpaper is so vivid with a blissful colour blend that I now have it as wallpaper on my desktop and tablet. Even my friends liked the wallpaper and I couldn’t resist telling them how to download these. I just love the natural art this wallpaper has and I hope to see more of such brilliant works in seasons to come. Thanks!
And what's wrong with the totally free for Windows, Linux, and MacOS vector drawing s/w Inkscape? On their site http://inkscape.org/ is published a portable version near the installer - it's a matter of taste to install or not to install.
Yes, Inkscape is worth looking at. It is the Best Free Vector Graphics Editor at this site.
Just don't give Rob a hard time for not mentioning it. After all this is a "hot find" article rather than a roundup of alternatives. In fact, there are so few good alternatives to paid vector-graphic products that they we're always excited to see a new one.
A bigger issue is that most users never bother to move beyond their favorite bitmap/photo image editor, of which there at least five times as many alternatives.
Without saving / exporting to any vector format I don't find it useful. Free version limitation: Free account can export image (PNG, JPEG) with watermark only. It looks like good way to sell access to wast amount of eye-catching templates.
For some Windows 10 users, the first time starting up will take several minutes. It does NOT show any program window until after it has processed all of the fonts, although it is running in the task view window. (I started several instances when I thought it wasn't running.) Apparently, it's loading and processing all of the system fonts. One forum testor mentioned that the nightly development build didn't have that problem anymore. Hopefully that will be the case for everyone.
Not mentioned is the fact that Inkscape makes use of the Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg) file format, a World Wide Web Consortium open format for vector graphics. This is the vector format used wherever possible on Wikipedia and throughout Wikimedia, yielding thousands of high-quality, freely usable vector graphics.
Unfortunately wales you may get unwanted software if you respond to the ads appearing in probably any apps from the Store. Try to press the close button on an ad window or your device's back button to escape those ads. Hope this helps.
I did not respond to any adds. I installed the app then as soon as the App was started my malware program came up with an instant message, "Progarm infected' Also there were unwanted pictures already installed. I am not saying that any of this was Jojo Yee's fault it could have been hacked into in some way.
Looks good on specs, and it certainly does fill in a hole of a decent Task Manager. The biggest minus to me would be no android app and no link into evernotes.
Hello BernardZ - you seem to be quite knowledgeable about task managers - I am looking for a desktop app / task manager as I have an aversion to cloud / online apps. Can you recommend one similar to the one in this discussion?
Thanks - FW
great stuff a great handy little app, I had this on my phone and when my dear dad saw the 1st thing he said ' I want that ', also swiss army knifes are pretty illegal in the Uk these days so this is the next best thing :)
Worth a shot tho looks like could get annoying. Been using one of those sites that sends you a summary at optional times. Can quik scan them at leisure rather than in frenzy of busy times.
Well, okay --- so VirusTotal didn't find stuff (based on the blacklists used by the respective programs) nor did (user-fed) WOT alert you on risks. On any new not-yet-discovered-but-oh-boy-so-nicely-to-exploit-vulnerabilities that is no surprise to me!
Errrr... is it just me, or ... would it maybe common sense to NOT trust
* a cheap looking site
* that has just ONE (!) product
* no proper contact information
* an empty forum
* and the product being pre-pre-pre-pre-Beta (version 0.0.6) ????
I guess, some people deliberately are looking for trouble, when installing software - HUH ?
Would you be one of them ??
Point taken, and I don't condemn your scepticism at all. But in this case, I've actually been in correspondence with the author of the programn (I requested a new feature and he promised to think about it), so I'm confident that this is something that can be trusted.
As for it being version 0.0.6 and having an empty forum, this is a tricky one. A lot of good products fail to hit a v1.0 release because no one ever gets to hear about them and the developer loses interest. In this case, I thought the product was useful enough to warrant being brought to the attention of Gizmo's readers, so I chose to do so.
Like I said before, this is still a great freebie as the only Music Player with multi-queue features. However since lyrics are so important to me, especially floating lyrics, I have to stick with either MusixMatch or Crimson Player (ad-free). The latter has scrolling lyrics in the Free version and floating lyrics in Pro.
Thanks GJ for the various suggestions. MusixMatch is one of my favourite apps too. Scrolling lyrics is supported in Musicolet, which reads lyrics from .lrc files or embedded in audio files.
I have been using this app for longer than I can remember. I am always cautious that just because you see something happening is it really accomplishing anything. I can't really tell how much good it is doing but it's never done any harm. I guess I would have to not use it for a while to see if my phone slows down or exhibits any other negative things happening. It has lots of positive reviews, has been around for a long time and I haven't had one issue with it.
All-In-One Toolbox is my favorite for peaking Android performance and has everything I need. It has a good range of 10 built-in tools: Easy Swipe (don't really use this), CPU cooler (I really don't know what that does); Batch Install, Batch Uninstall, Backup & Restore (for your installed apps), System App Uninstall, App2sd (the one I most use), Boot Speedup, Startup Customize, and File Manager. It also has 13 plugins that you can install: Ad Detect, AppLock (requires an additional password before running selected apps), Auto Tasks, Game Booster, Notification Manager, Permissions, Pro Key (disables unobtrusive ads, which show when exiting the app and don't present themselves when Auto Tasks runs), QR and Barcode Scan, Quick Settings, Sensor Box, Volume Settings, Compass, and Flashlight.

One word: Android. Customize it, hack it, root it to your heart's content at 1/3 the price. Apple is for rich kids.
I must be blind because I don't see the VPN button. Where is it?
The free VPN is only available on Developer version 38 of Opera. It is not quite a VPN but a proxy that only protect your browsing not other apps.

I didn't see any "VPN" letters to the extreme left of the address box.

Also the browser has been designed for fat fingers on a mobile device with large fonts and a huge amount of white space. This is fine for a phone but it's hardly anything I would want to use on a pc at work.
You can get the surfeasy vpn as an extension on the regular Opera now, but it only gives 500MB a month, for free.
Yes, I'd endorse the portable version too. At first I had the installed version, but it was buggy. Hovering over its system tray icon was like molasses sometimes. Ever since I switched to the portable version it's been fine.

In the past, using windows 95/98 I used a clipboard manager.
Very useful but it was not updated for newer OS.
I am going to dowload portable version because I'am trying to limit my installed applicatios.
Peter
The perhaps unfortunately named Arsclip is well worth a look in this category of app.
http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/97/
Ditto is the top pick here at Gizmo's freeware. (http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-clipboard-replacement-utility.htm) So, what's new?
Also mentioned in the list of Best Free Clipboard Replacement Utility (http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-clipboard-replacement-utility.htm) and definitely a good AND actively developed program (which can't be said from Ditto; but maybe Ditto is so good that it does need little improvement)
PS. I use Ditto on my work PC and ArsClip at home. And I'm happy with both of them
Been using Ditto for years. Does the job and for free.
I agree with "oblivion" that Clipboard Help and Spell is the best! I explored a very large number of clipboard utilities and was amazed at the capabilities of Clipboard Help and Spell.
It's available at:
http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/clipboardhelpandspell/index...
You can:
Configure the number of previous clips to see in the pop-up menu
See a much larger listing of all of the clips used recently
Capture both words and images for pasting
Delete any clip copied (great for passwords)
Set up a set of favorites for re-pasting
and much, much more.
It is by far the most powerful clipboard manager I've ever encountered, and surprisingly easy to use, too.
It's especially great if you copy or cut some text and open a MS Office program to paste the text into. Microsoft arrogantly clears the clipboard upon opening. This utility allows you to get it back. One improvement might be to put the contents back into the clipboard upon opening the Office document.
Hi !
I've been using ClipX for years, and I've been very happy with it.
http://bluemars.org/clipx/
If I can remember, I tried Ditto and a few others, but for some reason I preferred ClipX.
Use to use Yankee Clipper because it did everything I needed with managing both text and images when clipped. Switched to Ditto because it does just about everything without the complexity. Simply install it and forget it.
But Notepad++ is free!
Great program. What's the file size limit for the free version?
I am guessing this is not for XP users ?
"Supported OS: Windows 10/8.1/8/7/Vista/Server 2012/Server 2008."
If I want to install it 'Zeman Antimalware' complains that this is a suspicious packet and removes it. Now what?
Definitely a false positive.
Yes, Notepad++ is free and it has a lot of plugins, however, if you dare it to open a very large file, say a 1.5 GB file, it will absolutely refuse to do that, something you can do perfectly with EmEditor with no problems.
Have you reported this issue to its support?

Could not get it to download, clicked on the free option said my cart was empty... :-) tried numerous time.
Download worked fine for me. Did you disable script blockers?
I could download and install but not run. Got this error:
Could not find the main class:ih.soft.app.gdmat.GdMatApp. Program will exit.

Had the same problems as others before.
The company seems to have corrected the site's problem

It will take me an hour just to read the Terms and Conditions, and translate from Lawyerese to English.
Pity. Doesn't seem to be available on my Android phone-tablet combo.
Installed on Android via Google Playstore. Visiting Fort William soon and like the look of the place already! Thanks!
Please post walls for dual screen systems. I use 3840x1080 but I can resize others.
Thanks.
Tim
Beautiful. I especially like the soft focus and warm colors. The contrast makes the flower seem to have been edged with a pencil. Nice.

+1 for Inkscape
What about Sketchup?
Also, Wikipedia has a Comparison of vector graphics editors at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_vector_graphics_editors

Be careful, when I installed it on android it also brought unwanted spam and virus. Had to use malware and then uninstalled.
Further comment would be helpful.
I'm using Windows 7 so I got to the web site and got this To use this game, upgrade to Windows 10. So I guess I won't be able to use it.

Great! I was looking for a small app like this.
Worth a shot tho looks like could get annoying. Been using one of those sites that sends you a summary at optional times. Can quik scan them at leisure rather than in frenzy of busy times.
Does this pop up on direct tweets or all that a person follows?
Thanks, it would be like having twitter open. I follow to many

Actually working on a filter system to also give you the ability to exclude certain users from showing up in the Twittalert notification feed.
Have used it in the past, and is a great freebie!
Nice find Jojo. I installed it, and like it. Good features for an app which is free and ad-free too.
Also, it's from India, which makes me quite proud :D.
I have Rocket Player installed too, which is another music player that I like. Offers good features for free, and is simple too.
Thanks for this, Jojo. Pretty impressive considering no ads or in app purchases. It's very good :-)
