Transfer Files Between Devices With No Hassle 1 year 3 months ago not recognized

yeah...nah...
Really need one of those apps that mines the phone for all the user data so you don't have to search for it all through system folders. Would really like to select between images/vids/contact/mssgs/bookmarks etc. All userdata.
There is yet another shifty dishonest programme that you don't see is severely limited in its capabilities in the 'trial version' called something like {commercial app edited out by moderator}. That would have done the trick. haven't so far been able to locate anything free that does the job. Can anyone else?

The Gizmo and Instructables sites are at the top of my priority list to visit. You can be sure of accurate, good quality information from the former. Sadly my experience of Instructables is that the quality of the offerings varies from the 5% that are superb down to the utterly, dangerously outrageously wrong projects that lurk at the bottom of the tank. As with all things Web, viewer discretion is (strongly) advised especially anything from the Indian sub-continent that involves high voltages and sellotape insulation.

Thanks a lot. Looks to be a help compared to wading through the endless youtube DYIs. The good ones are well worth it, but sooo many.
Have settled on J-B Weld original (red & black separate squeeze-mix) compound for any plastic to plastic that will be subject to stresses.
Many glues like Gorilla don't fuse plastic to plastic if they are the rock hard, shiny surface kind. May look like there's a bond but first time you apply any stress, twist, impact they'll just re-separate. The compound can be worked for quite a while. Best given the full 24 hours to cure though is pretty rock hard after about 6 hrs air dry. Ends up black vs stated grey. Haven't used the 15 min fast set J-B that is red & yellow.

I followed Jerry Pournelle's site, and he operated on the Public Radio Model. His site was open and free. But, twice a year, for one week each time, he would add a few words at the beginning or end of each day's posts, asking people to consider donating. (He called it the Public Radio Model, because when his local NPR station started their pledge drive it would remind him that it was time for his own.) His was a fairly soft sell, but he would remind people that the donations justified the time he put into the site, and allowed him to remain free from the influence of advertisers. Words to that effect were his pledge drive text.

I found that to be a very reasonable compromise. He didn't bug people for money, constantly. And, his pledge drives reminded me to donate once a year.

Alternatively, I'd subscribe here via Patreon.

As to Prebake. Click the top most offer to add to uBlock Origin. Auto adds the 2 lines needed. I tried the

Just click that top offer on landing page of Prebake and let than add the 2 lines which then show inside uBlock as:

Added "Prebake - Filter Obtrusive Cookie Notices" to ABP (Firefox Browser - current stable version) but it doesn't appear to have done anything. Save and replace the HOSTS file as outlined above. That should do it.

I would create a copy of the HOSTS file (maybe rename it HOSTSold) and save it somewhere just in case you need to restore it.

My guess is that a program changed the directory for finding album information.

These are the notices that pop up asking you if you want to receive notifications from a website, with options to allow, not allow, or never let the notification appear again for that site.
If you agree, the notifications usually appear as a pop up or other noticeable change in your browser, sometimes accompanied by a sound, usually when there's new content added to a page. For example, if you visit a website about weather forecasts, you might get a notice asking if you want to allow notifications. If you agree, you'll likely see notifications appear in your browser when a weather alert or breaking weather news is issued.
I'm not sure the kind of pop up you mention that notifies you of an article you're reading.

I share the enthusiasm and respect already expressed by others for this Gizmo site and for the objective and reliable advice it offers. So I was happy to send a donation (a modest one, as I'm a pensioner!).

As MidnightCowboy notes in his post about GHacks, the problem of sustaining independent sites is widespread. Covert funding and advertising undermines trust - especially if such funding is not transparent.

I wonder if it is worth examining the approach taken by another online-advice site. Ironically the site, MoneySaving Expert (which was founded and run in the UK) was conceived to offer impartial financial advice!

Their service involves providing reviews and links to other products and services (much like Gizmo's does - only their links were to banks, insurance companies, building societies etc, rather than software providers). They were concerned that their credibility would be compromised by advertising.

The arrangement they made was to be upfront and transparent about "sponsored links". Their reviews and analysis included links to the products concerned. The arrangement was evidently that MSE obtained a click-through payment when anyone clicked on the link. But such links were always marked by an asterisk and an explanatory note. And IIRC there was always an option to navigate to the provider's site or product without using the sponsored link.

This isn't perfect. It relies on the editorial integrity of the site-owners to maintain an objective approach, and to avoid selecting or giving prominence only to products/sites which offer to sponsor links. But it is perhaps one possible way to keep sites such as Gizmo's alive.

I downloaded PDF-XChange Editor Portable today from PortableApps. https://portableapps.com/apps/office/pdf-xchange-editor-portable

It ran the installer, and installed to a local usb folder. Not sure how portable it actually was.

I was able to edit text, but not lines, shapes, images, etc. If I did edit those paid-only features, it warned me, it would save with a watermark. I just edited text and it saved with no watermark, and I used FoxIt Reader to search for the changed text and the old text was no longer found.

I had to restore the system to a previous Restore Point.
Finally, to fully remove it, I had to utilize Total Uninstaller with a valid license to (hopefullly) completely uninstall it (still NOT 100% sure): even if the Installation Directory was there, and I can see uninst000.exe, by double clicking on it the system says it is no there !!!
Alternatively, BEFORE installing it just google "AOMEI how to safely uninstall/delete".

I was delighted to contribute again and will continue to do so but I think you're right - you shouldn't have to go around asking for donations.

I love visiting Gizmo's Freeware but more importantly I TRUST your site to be objective and honest about the stuff you review. This, I think, is your unique selling point.

I wonder if there is a place for a Gizmo sub-site that reviewed commercial software *and services* on the same honest basis but funding itself from a membership fee rather than supplier kick-backs.

As an IT professional I know how difficult and time-consuming it is to evaluate different products (desktop software, online services, VPNs etc) when the need arises. This is made even more difficult by the sites funded by companies that just *happen* to rate theie products most highly in a group test. I'd be happy to pay for access to reliable reviews.

Not an answer to your problem but offered as food for thought!

Nimbus Note 1 year 4 months ago ErikJon

In all fairness, Nimbus ia not bad, but it just needs lots of improvement, and sending suggestions to the developer does not usually help much.

Another example is the simple fact that it cannot search and find key words within the entire collection of notes, at one time. In other words, if you have 75 notes stored, each one has a title, and you can only search the titles for a key word, or else open any one note individually and search within that one note, but not across the text of all your notes combined globally. Consequently, if you cannot remember whuch note contains that key word, and ut is nowhere in the titles, you will have to open each of the 75 notes individually and aearch one by one.

On the other hand, ColorNote will let you search all the notes at once, display the note containing the word searched for, and even highlight the word for you, once opened . Of course, ColorNote has provlems of its own, but it can handle simple searching, while Nimbus cannot.

Hey folks, I have resisted the change to FireFox or Google browsers since I started with windows 98SE, so a long time. The reason is I never fully trusted myself to delve into areas that were too techie for me.
Now I am on Windows 10 and IE 11 and Yahoo mail tells me it will no longer support IE11 as of July 31 2018 and that I should switch to FF or Ggle, So, my question is twofold The discussion by gizmo.richards on FF (https://www.techsupportalert.com/firefox.htm) doesn't say anything about IE11 or Microsoft Edge in relation to FF use, so should it and 2. Can I install FF for Yahoo and use M Edge or IE11 alternately.

PNotes.NET 1 year 4 months ago Elltxone

I've been using Pnotes.NET for a little over a month now on my Win 10 workstation. I have about 6 notes created and I like the keyboard command to show or hide all notes. That is how I want it to work. However, during this time Pnotes.NET has crashed on me several times. Typically it happens right after doing a save on a note that I've made changes on. But it's also happened after relocating a position of a note and then using the keyboard HIDE command and system lock. If this were an occasional thing I could live with it, but the frequency that it happens has me looking at the other alternatives. It may be time to move away from .NET to get some stability. :-( Just sayin.

view

This seems like a good program for notes. The one thing I WISH was that it had a keyboard hotkey to HIDE all notes and SHOW all notes. I don't like having to use the mouse and notification area icon to hide notes. At least it's fast and easy to SHOW by a simple click on the icon, but setting them back to being hidden is a pain. Going to read more and maybe find a way to do it. Wish me luck!

Unfortunately our own situation is mirrored throughout the web. This statement on another long established site (Ghacks) pretty much sums up the collective position. MC - Site Manager.

"Advertising revenue is falling fast across the Internet, and independently-run sites like Ghacks are hit hardest by it. The advertising model in its current form is coming to an end, and we have to find other ways to continue operating this site."

Having been a SciFi fan since I was a child in the fifties [and being considered a bit strange because of it] it has been a great thrill to see so many of those concepts become a reality. Thanks for a great article.

Best Free Android Apps - Updated 2019 1 year 4 months ago NearMinder

Thanks for this article Techsupportalert!

I would also recommend NearMinder, which is the only app to send you reminders based on your proximity to your contacts! With this app you can easily set reminders for things you have to do when meeting people and get notified when these people are nearby. It also works for location-based reminders.

You can try it via this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nearminder.nearminder

Best Free RSS Reader-Aggregator 1 year 4 months ago Bill L

I would have had an additional category, noting which readers were "Portable" [ don't write to Windows registry, can be run in own directory, etc.] and can be carried around on an USB thumb drive to any computer to run-and-collect.

I use QuiteRss Portable that way.

And I really liked Mozilla Thunderbird's bar graphs of date frequency of any searched keywords or phrase displays. Such analysis of the feeds can be useful to see "trends" over time. The Thunderbird mailer (which I only use as an RSS reader) also comes in a portable form.

I have a bunch of PubMed RSS feeds that I catch up on at any computer in computer-cafes, libraries etc.
