I'm not trying to defend Google - but if you use their search engine - why not be better at it? And you can avoid tracking your searches e.g. by using Startpage (which uses Google search but anonymizes your search).

How to rip DVD movies using freeware HandBrake 1 year 1 month ago whoareyou

I used to be a loyal user of handbrake, but as my more and more DVDs can't be grabbed by handbrake, I am very disappointed with this software. Handbrake alternatives such as the Wonderfox DVD ripper have been updated, and all of my DVDs have been successfully crawled so far. The software will always be eliminated if it cannot inject new technology.

seriously?! The "company" (they are NOT really a search engine anymore, more of a business) that used to give us the most relevant results based on our inquiries, used to protect out personal data and info, now changes their own webmaster rules without notice on a regular basis, forced webmasters to push all sites to be mobile friendly with not much time to do it, bans sites in batches of 1,000s because they simply don't like them, etc etc etc

And now they want to tell you how to search?

As the late, great Heath Ledger said as the Joker: He he, ha ha... And I thought MY jokes were bad

Some years back, Google introduced this as a "live" course. There was a forum for discussions, and at the end of the course you could earn a "Google Power User" diploma. Probably they have fine-tuned it now using the experiences from that. The course was very good and entertaining - I can only recommend it.

I agree. I registered a long time ago and made up stuff for the registration and used an email address I use for sign up offers. I am not nagged to death either and have gotten several useful books all of which are still accessible via their online library.

One bone I have to pick with is particular book is that none of the table of contents entry appear to be linked to the actual page in the book. Means that one has to use the search function in the PDF file to fine the particular page.

I agree with you Rick_S. A lot of complaints for a free, useful ebook. The only time they (TradePub) communicate is to email the download link. Thanks for the book offer. I'd already been notified by "makeuseof" that this was offered and downloaded it. Breezed through it and decided it may help. Me or a friend. As far as registering for the offer, I'd done that long ago (I'm retired) and have received a small library from TradePub. And they don't NAG you. So again, thank you.
By the way, I made a $5 donation to you last week Giz. I hope that helps.

I'm not understanding the complaints here. The comments are not about the value of the book, but just gripes, as far as I can tell. First of all the company creates technical books for IT professionals and others. They want to know what we may be interested in, so that they can send us updated newsletters and maybe sell us manuals, if we like this one. I'm also retired, but I did work, and did buy appropriate manuals to supplement what I needed in at work, and now even, since things are changing faster than ever.

As for it's cost vs the information wanted, is the book useful for you? If not, then that is your choice, but your reason for not getting it here sounds like an excuse. Company name a problem? Put in None or N/A (Not Applicable). I've done both.

In a world of spin, fake news and ever more devious marketing tactics, Gizmo's site provides something of real value: honest, objective, reliable advice and information, delivered by volunteers with integrity and no hidden agenda. That's something worth supporting. So I've made my (modest) contribution - and hope many others will do so too.

It's a shame that while you updated the rankings, you didn't update your review(s). I'm speaking specifically about MusicBee. The 'full review' is more than two years old, and being a long-time user of MusicBee, your review is a disservice to your readers and to the program. You don't even put version numbers in your reviews. MusicBee is under very active development (3.2) was just released, and there are bug fixes and feature enhancements almost weekly.

And the statement that MusicBee doesn't have a CD burner option is plainly wrong. That was implemented long before 2016. I'm not going to nit-pick every thing that's wrong in the review, but if you're going to provide a review service, don't you think it should be timely? Like using the most recent version. This makes me question all the reviews I see on Gizmo.

Best Free Digital Image Viewer 1 year 1 month ago EldonW

FWIW
It's difficult to say how old the program is. I think it may have been updated for the free version. The help file shows it's copyrighted 2012 but the executable shows 2016. More importantly, it supports Windows 10 back to Windows Vista.
I think the setup file and resulting installation can be made a lot smaller. The lang folder contains 196 language files (17.2 MB). Also, the frames folder has 194 files (98.4 MB) and Objects has 170 files (28.8 MB). That's 75 % of the installation.

I didn't mean those giveaways you're referring to, Anupam. That free section has been up and running on their site prior to the days when Photo Commander was included in my article. It was there where you could find the free program. One day the program didn't appear in the free list anymore, but a few months later it was offered there again. That happened at least twice in the next couple of years, as far as I remember. So it looked to me as an intermittent appearance based on whatever marketing reasons. I admit I haven't bothered to see what happened later on. Now their latest version is v.16 and the free one is v.11 currently, so it isn't just a capped program but quite older as well.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on this to see how they manage these issues and that software might take a place here again. Thanks.

view
Best Free Digital Image Viewer 1 year 1 month ago Anupam

Yes, they used to give away older versions for free, or used to give away products on giveaway sites by promotional codes. I tried their Burning Studio then, and while it's good, I found it bulky.

But, now I see that they have a free section altogether, where they are providing slightly older than latest versions for free. You can check them out here:

https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/fdl/21/0/free/0

Or, under Downloads, you can select product type as full version (free).

I have downloaded and will check out the Photo Commander.

view
Best Free Digital Image Viewer 1 year 1 month ago marcdarkin

Thanks for your suggestion, Eldon. Photo Commander Free was already featured in my article years ago but I had to remove it because at Ashampoo they have the odd policy of discontinuing their free offers periodically and wait for some time before giving them away again. I guess it has something to do with the fact that their free versions are always quite older than current paid ones and who knows what marketing considerations. It's a pity because I know the program is good, but I'm not prepared to keep up with that practice.

It can only be partly effective though as our regular users only make up less than half of our site visitors, the rest come from Google Search. We could put in a popup asking everyone who visits the site to whitelist us but I find these things an annoyance when I encounter them on a site I don't know. In the longer run we need a better funding model then relying on ads or asking our users for more donations. I'm going to ask our regular users for suggestions how we might do that. I agree with Rick_S. If the current crisis in ad-related revenue is from the widespread use of ad-blockers, please let people know prominently how easy it is to make an exception (whitelist) for Gizmo's site. A few ads on one site is a small price to pay for helping out even while keeping most of your web browsing ad-free... (in Ad-block Plus, you simply click on the red "ABP" icon in the browser's toolbar row and click on the top line "enabled on this site" so that it changes to "disabled on this site".)

I feel a bit foolish admitting this, but at the same time perhaps it should be seen by current admin here... I have always visited Gizmos's at the "Hot Finds" section. Since I saw very little happening since Rob's departure, I figured the site was on the way out. I now see there has been a steady stream of "News" articles posted, but I wonder if there are others out there who only ever looked at the hot finds section (or another section - are other portions of the site being ignored?) and have drifted away because there is next to zero activity. Ad-blockers are one thing - low traffic is another, and perhaps more insidious.

Happy to Donate. I have also switched off my ad blocker for your site. It's the least i could do for a site which has taught me all i know about computer software. Keep her LIT.

Hi Gizmo, it's a while since we communicated. I still figure that one day we catch up for that Sydney lunch when I come down from the Central Coast and you make it in from your green part of the world. Your site deserves to go from strength to strength as that's how I still see it travelling. Cheers, Petermac.

Disabled my ad blocker - I didn't realize it was on for Gizmo's - and I'm making a donation. Thanks for the great work!
