Security Attack Called Logjam makes Browsers Vulnerable 5 years 4 months ago v.laurie Joe, I don't know if if an add-on is interfering with the test or may actually be protecting you. A typical upgrade has the option for a clean install or for retaining personal files. I do not personally know what happens to a dual boot system but this link says Windows 10 upgrade keeps the Linux partition but removes grub.

BTW check this link for some old Windows features that get removed when you upgrade.

In this post, Greg Keizer comments:

Still, the lack of clarity about many questions related to Windows 10 at this late date is disturbing, although not rare for Microsoft. At times the company seems entirely unable to come clean about its policies.

Computerworld, for example, installed the 10130 build from a disk image onto a new VM on a Mac -- not as an upgrade from one equipped with Windows 7 or 8.1 -- and although it was marked as "Windows is activated," that may not last.

Free Windows 10 for Mac and Linux Users? 5 years 3 months ago v.laurie Personally, I would not upgrade immediately. There is no rush. When Windows RTM comes out at the end of July, I suspect it will still have bugs. Let the dust settle for a couple of months and see what people are experiencing. If you are happy enough with Windows 7, you might even want to wait until it is time for you to buy a new computer. Then you can get Windows 10 already installed. Upgrades can be a hassle. view

How to Make Your PC Safer by Uninstalling Flash Player 5 years 2 months ago v.laurie The article is clear that removing or keeping Flash is up to the individual user. It says, "It is time to assess whether you should keep it." If you need it, that's your choice. If you want to keep Flash, that's your decision. view
How to Make Your PC Safer by Uninstalling Flash Player 5 years 2 months ago v.laurie

Several of the comments ask questions about HTML5. HTML5 is the current standard markup language for web sites. Among other improvements, it contains support for multimedia. All modern browsers support it although Internet Explorer is not fully compliant. That means, for example, that video can be displayed seamlessly on web pages without any need for plug-ins or special APIs. The browser does the work of display. The PC user does not have to install anything extra. Many sites, including YouTube, are using HTML5. For more information, there is a Wikipedia article here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5

view
How to Make Your PC Safer by Uninstalling Flash Player 5 years 2 months ago v.laurie Usage patterns vary. I know many people who almost never need Flash. Your figure of 60% Flash reflects your particular interests. Also, anyone who uses mobile platforms will see far less Flash. Almost any web site that is designed these days is using HTML5. How to Make Your PC Safer by Uninstalling Flash Player 5 years 2 months ago v.laurie

If you need to use sites with Flash, then you might want to use a browser that has a plug-in or extension that lets you selectively enable and disable Flash. For example, NoScript for Firefox will let you block Flash except for the specific sites you want to use. There are also a number of general security suggestions in this article that are worth looking at. Also, be sure to update your Flash player every time Adobe releases another security patch.

Added later: Flashblock is another Firefox add-on.

How to Get Your Previous System Back After You Have Upgraded to Windows 10 5 years 2 months ago v.laurie I haven't actually done it but I think you should be able to go back to Windows 7 with your system image. You probably have to do it with a bootable USB key or DVD since I suspect the image won't work directly from Windows 10 but I could be wrong. Be sure your PC will recognize whatever medium you are using. Another thing I don't know is how activation will work when you try to downgrade after the 30-day period. Your Windows 7 license is converted to a Windows 10 license when you upgrade. Microsoft licensing is always murky so it is conceivable that you might have to do a telephone activation. view

You are right, Joe. This tool is of limited use but I thought it should be pointed out. Microsoft needs to come up with something better. Are Recent Patches to Windows 7/8 Letting Microsoft Spy on You? 5 years 1 month ago v.laurie What is the source of your "understanding"? Do you work for Microsoft? Could you please document the exact purpose of the updates? Can you tell us what the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) actually does? How does the "experience' of a customer get "improved"? Wouldn't monitoring what the customer does be necessary in order to "improve" their experience? Labeling concerns as FUD without explanation is not helpful. Instead you could do the PC community a service by making it clear for average users what these updates are for. And no - vague terms like CEIP are not an explanation. view

Best Free Antivirus Software 5 years 11 months ago UserError

If I may put my two cents in, Bitdefender free edition is not a good choice.

You have to download an installer -an offline intaller simply does no exist- and the installation needs several consecutive downloads even after the installation. The first definitions update takes a while and sometimes goes wrong, so the program forces you to start the updating process again. I know this because I tried installing bitdefender on different PCs from friends and relatives, so I can say the process isn't as smooth as you'd want.

The installer does not include an uninstaller, you have to download a third party one if you ever get bored (or annoyed) by Bitdefender. Also, you have 30 days to test the product, after that period you are forced you to create a free BitDefender account or login with facebook or G+ within the app to continue using the product.

IMHO, not the best of approaches.

Windows 10’s Fall Update Removes User Installed Applications Without Asking 4 years 10 months ago UserError

I won't go as far as you want to, but I 100% agree on the problems Windows 10 has brought. I decided to install it on a laptop... My Gosh! What a mistake that was! Several privacy and security settings I disabled previously turned themselves back on after a few hours, the word "privacy" is practically non-existant now. My network monitor was showing the OS was sending data back home on a regular basis every minute, every hour, every day. Have no idea what kind of data was being sent, but I don't trust Windows 10. At least the previous OSs ware more transparent on their intentions.

IMO it's unfair to list as a con what "spam" comments that nor YouTube or content providers have no reasonable control over. Spam was first used to refer to unsolicited email. By posting comments for public consumption or post original comments to the content one is in essence soliciting responses. Googles/youtubes attempt to encourage/force the use of real names on YouTube had the potential to move abuse from inside the web into the world where people actually live. A crank angered by a John Doe on the web is likely to harass every John Doe they can find a phone number for. Actually comment on YouTube are some of the most useful on the web, particularly since YouTube got rid of the character limit and allowed inserting of all URL'. Yea you have to ignore the stupid crap, but that's a small price to pay for free. tmy gmail account associated with YouTube isn't my primary email account. The only time a make point to visit my gmail account is when I'm expect something from the google help staff or from the google/YouTube forums. Generally I scroll through the mail and based on the subject mark expect email to be moved to a folder for reading, the remainder is block deleted. I rarely engage in YouTube comment peeing contests

5 Best Free Video Streaming Sites 4 years 9 months ago usadoug

One doesn't have to use Google+ to use you tube, why not setup G+? When using YouTube I given the choice to use my long time anonymous YouTube user name of my G+ name. In the event the ability to comment is so important to anyone they should decide to stop viewing YouTube content after telling the google/YouTube and the content providers of that decision, and carry through with that decision. Clearly YouTube's hope was to clean up comments by having comments associated with what are thought to be real names civility would ensue. Did take sever exchanges with someone at YouTube to discover how I could still use my long time YouTube user name at YouTube, not my G= associated name. Sometimes getting what you think is right takes effort, and patience. Yes policy can change tomorrow. I'm ready to be allowed to watch the videos without commenting, or walk away from YouTube, I doubt few others are ready to do so as well. Anyway not in enough numbers to influance policy.

I have been repairing computer systems since 1989 and if there is one thing I have observed, the antivirus tests run in labs are significantly different than what happens to users' computers. Basing a choice of anti-virus upon the results of lab tests shows the media wants to avoid assuming any liability - they blame it on someone else. What good is advice where no liability was assumed? I would like to warn others about a little caveat with Wordweb, as a former user. The program itself is excellent, and from what I could tell, is completely worthy of its Gizmo's Freeware award. But there is a condition if one wishes to use the free version after 30 days. Let me share with you an excerpt from the Wordweb developers' site:

"WordWeb free version may be used indefinitely only by people who take at most two commercial flights (not more than one return flight) in any 12 month period. People who fly more than this need to purchase the Pro version if they wish to continue to use it after a 30-day trial period."

I had not previously read this, and answered truthfully that I had in fact taken more than two one-way flights in the past year. Now I can supposedly never use the free version again, because of my alleged contribution to global warming. A real shame. And for a strong political stance on an issue that I largely call into question, but that is neither here nor there. The point is that it is conditional freeware, so I just wanted others to keep this in mind. Well, at least I didn't tell any "fibs" come the trial's end. No moral dilemmas here! I would still highly recommend the product, although I plan to check out the other programs featured here for my own personal use. Wordweb's free version is sadly no longer an option for me. Maybe in future updates, the author of this review can include a disclaimer.

Best Free Online Backup 6 years 8 months ago UltraCraig64

This article seems heavily outdated, so I wanted to bring light to some other free online backup services.

First, there is Mega. As in the Megaupload guys. Mega allows for a whopping 50gb of cloud storage space. There is end-to-end encryption, and if you lose your password, it's lost forever. Very secure. See what you guys think. https://mega.co.nz

There is also Mediafire, which has been around for quite a few years now. You can get 10gb, and there is also a desktop app which makes the whole process more convenient. They also have mobile apps, so you can connect with multiple devices.
www.mediafire.com

Then there is Surdoc, which offers 100gb of cloud storage space. Wow. They also have mobile apps, and encrypt the files, although I'm not sure of the specifics with that.
https://www.surdoc.com

Shared.com offers 100gb as well, and also claims to provide some type of security with your files.
https://shared.com/

And lastly, Copy.com offers 15gb of cloud storage space. They offer shareable storage space between different users and everything is syncable. They use Barracuda's cloud storage servers, which may provide extra security.
https://www1.copy.com

I hope this helps with updating the article. I would be very curious to know if the ones who offer more would come out ahead, or if the ones who offer less can compenstate for a lack of space with a competent user experience.

I am a non-sophisticated user, maybe like most of the users, and I have been very pleased with ublock since I installed it instead of Ad Blocker. It did not affect the speed of my browser [Comodo Dragon], and for the last couple of weeks I did not see even a single Ad. Earlier, with ABP I saw, infrequently, an Ad here or there.

Summary: UBlock works very well [at least for the last few weeks], it was trivial to install and use. Hence, it is appropriate to thank Vic laurie for presenting it to us.

Who's Been Using All My Internet Bandwidth? 5 years 6 months ago txeng

Hello,

A problem with NetWorx.

A scan with VT did NOT come out clean. Unfortunately, I do not know how to attach the complete report, but here is the result.

The scan heading:

SHA256: 166b420c0121ad8615712744eef918e77880e9f4c9c91267715d50bb5a53291f
File name: networx_setup.exe
Detection ratio: 1 / 57
Analysis date: 2015-03-15 12:49:00 UTC ( 0 minutes ago )

The offender:

ESET-NOD32
a variant of Win32/NetFilter.A potentially unsafe 20150315

This scan is for the 32 bit install version. The portable version did come out clean.

Any idea what went wrong?

Regards, DM

Thanks for your excellent survey of image viewers. I've been trying to decide between XnView and FastStone, but now I have another half-dozen to consider!

I thought I'd offer that Pictomio displays an ad banner along the bottom and hasn't been updated since 2012.

Even though the website says kuView's portable, I couldn't find a portable version. When I installed the only version I found, I had to very carefully click the dim "Decline" button repeatedly to avoid getting other software installed along with it.

Thanks for these reviews. I see that the page for Replace Text says "Please note that Replace Text is no longer supported and has known problems with some Windows 7 installations."

MC, I've been a donating supporter of this site for many years. I'm deeply grateful to everyone who makes it happen, including you, and I understand the need to eliminate unnecessary work for the volunteers who kindly donate their time. As a user and promoter of freeware and open source software, I'm glad that this site focuses on noncommercial software.

However, I was surprised and uncomfortable to encounter the idea that we can't even MENTION the name of a commercial product during a discussion. This led me just now to review the forum & site rules (http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/announcements/3617-forum-...). Here's rule 18:

"References to commercial software : Members/visitors may refer to commercial products in either forum posts, or main site comments, but may not include links** to them. The content in such posts must be relevant to the topic being discussed, and not posted as an endorsement for promotional purposes, or discuss the features and abilities of a commercial product."

Please consider either revisiting your decision or updating the rules to reflect current practices. Many thanks!

I use Greenshot, but for capturing scrolling screens in Firefox I use Screengrab (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/screengrab-fix-version).

I'm happy to see Inoreader get some attention. When Google Reader shut down, I jumped to Feedly, but after growing increasingly unhappy with it, I found Inoreader last year and swtiched to it. It's fantastic!

Was the flicker very slight and approx every 10 seconds? If so, this should be fixed for version 1.18. Try again and see what you think.

Did you have Flux open at the time? Make sure Flux is closed before testing. Was the flickering during the time it said "Transitioning to night" or "Transitioning to day" at the top right? If so, that may not be fixed then for you. If that happens again, please let me know, and then try changing the transition phase to 10 seconds, and see if the problem is lessened or gone.

Thanks for the feedback. I presume you had SS running by ticking the "Running" checkbox. Anyway, feel free to email me if you would like to get it working, or otherwise enjoy using F.lux instead.

So what would the recommendation be for a free image viewer I can use on a work machine? I don't need lots of tools or organising ability just able to click on the file and see the image. Possible tools would be rotate/flip but I want to edit the picture I can use an editor. Work will provide edit tools if needed but I just need something that can view almost any image and maybe switch between files in a directory.
I like Irfanview and use that at home but it's license is not suitable for work machine.

How to Work With Audio CD .CDA Files 4 years 3 months ago tweetiepooh

It also highlights a big failing when converting from CD to "digital". If you play a CD you get a continuous audio signal, there are special break points so you can hit tracks if wanted.

When you convert you get a number of separate files based on those CD tracks. Now in many cases this is fine but if the CD is live concert or especially classical music where a long movement maybe split into smaller segments playing back can be a real pain, you need a way to seamlessly play back without gaps, jumps or other hiccoughs.

Now there maybe players out there that will do this but this fails if you put the files on a stick and playback on a "device" (car radio). But is there even software players that can spot if two tracks played consecutively should be "joined" at an audio level.

I guess you can rip to one track but then loose ability to play sections by choice so it is still in the playback area where sometimes you pick the segment but if listening to the album/movement it can playback without gaps.

To solve the sorting I get the metadata to zero prefix the number - 01,02 (or even in once case 001,002) so it can sort by string and get the numbers right too.

Using Windows 7 And Linux On The Same Computer 2 years 6 months ago tweetiepooh

If you have multiple hard disks and your system can accommodate it you can arrange to have Linux boot from the 2nd disk and keep the Windows boot on the first disk. On my PC the method (with OpenSuse Linux) is
1)Switch hard disk boot order to disk2 then disk1
2)Boot from DVD/USB and install Linux (I have O/S's on disk 1 and data on disk 2). Set Linux to install its boot loader to MBR on disk 2.
3)On reboot the system will see Linux - GRUB allows booting to Linux and Windows.

If needed (like installing Windows updates with multiple reboots) you can switch hard disk boot order to disk 1 and the system sees the Windows boot loader and goes straight into that O/S. Once stable you can switch the boot order back to Linux/GRUB.
