Download Microsoft’s Free Windows 10 Quick Start Guide 3 weeks 2 days ago rhiannon

You're most welcome. If you're moving from Windows 7 to 10, the Start Menu might be more than you want to adjust to at thte moment. I was looking at some free Start Menu replacements but there are fewer than there were, and some, like Classic Shell, are no longer developed. I didn't add any to the article for that reason.
There are two Start Menu replacements I think work well but they are both commercial (paid) software. Both are under $5 USD but are still commercial software. My favorite is made by Stardock and I've used their Windows 8 and Windows 10 versions since they were released (Start8 and Start10). StartIsBack is another one that performs well and has quite a few options.
The Windows 10 default menu isn't bad but it does take some getting used to if you're migrating from Windows 7.
I work better with a Start Menu that's closer to Windows 7, and, at the moment don't have the patience to learn the Windows 10 Start Menu since Windows 10 itself is putting me through my paces. And, I use the keyboard for much of what the Start Menu does. Windows 10 latest issue is corrupting my user profile and that's been.....a learning experience. ¯\(º_o)/¯

Best Free Window Manager/Resizer/Arranger List 3 weeks 3 days ago jDally987

4 years later, this is a freakin amazing comment...... I don't use half those tools but I do use AHK for all kinds of stuff, in combination with AltDrag which is totally essential to my workflow now, I feel naked without it when working on other people's computers. (I am looking for ways to replace Altdrag entirely with just a single AHK script though)

One trick with Altdrag is I have a Logitech G602 mouse (with 6 buttons on the side) and I remapped one of them to Alt, so I can just hold that down and quickly move windows using mouse1, resize with mouse2, etc... all with 1 hand. It's made me incredibly lazy & I love it.

Another favorite of mine with autohotkey is remapping the IJKL keys to function as the arrow keys, whenever I'm holding down semicolon (;). Other people have used caps lock as well. This way you don't have to take your hands off the home row of the keyboard, STUPID useful when programming or navigating through text or code of any kind.

Funny you mentioned the portability aspect and having 2 scripts to automate running everything. I have a few .bat files synced to my cloud drive that I run very first thing upon setting up a new Windows machine, that 1. install Chocolatey package manager (also super useful), 2. install AHK and Altdrag using chocolatey, 3. create shortcuts to my main "master" AHK start-script in windows' Startup folder, so it always runs instantly whenever the PC starts. I swear this kind of setup should be included by default somehow with windows, embedded in the OS or something, especially for how long it took me to figure all of it out myself lol.

AOMEI Backupper 3 weeks 6 days ago ctwist

There are 3 major problems with AOMEI Backupper 5.6:
- It cannot back up an Outlook PST file (this is mentioned in the manual's FAQs). So none of my emails will be backed up!
- If a backup is in progress, you can't reboot. This interrupts the shutdown after all the apps are closed, so you can't cancel the shutdown and continue. The only option is to force a hard reboot. The backup program should be capable of suspending the backup and resuming after the restart.
- The free version does not allow filters, so I can't tell it not to back up the 8GB Windows.iso file. This causes a LOT of unnecessary junk files to be backed up.

While looking for a pdf to word converter after PDF Shaper stopped RTF conversion, I tried a couple of links under "Other" here.

Free PDF to Word Converter link looks sketchy. A couple pages were blocked by uBlock Origin and then I was offered a download of something else.

Free PDF to Word Doc Converter is a valid link and download, but has not been updated since January, 2012, and did not work on my Windows 10 64bit system. It loaded fine, but when I pressed the button to convert nothing happened. May just be me IDK

I did find version 8.3 of PDF Shaper (released in May, 2018 and superseded in October, 2019) as the last free version to still convert to RTF. So I am going to stick with that as I have found it pretty reliable.

The link here to Glory Logic for pdf shaper leads to a 404. Any links on the 404 page I tried also lead to 404 page.

II did find pdf shaper at pdfshaper.com and there is still a "free version" link to download without optional offers as mentioned in other comment.
I believe this is the same product as here. I have been using pdf shaper for a while after reading about it here.
https://www.pdfshaper.com/download.html

If it is the same product, there no longer is an option to convert to RTF in free version, only converts to text and image in free version.
I came here because I thought I was able to convert in previous versions and I guess I was right.
Not sure when they eliminated that

The only option I can think of to set Firefox to open .eml files. If you have or can create/save an email on your computer in the .eml format you can choose what to open it with. Directions here:

It seems that missing mailto protocol on Windows 7 is an issue. I would ask first if you checked every entry to the end of all of the default programs? If I recall correctly there's more than one section (I think the second section is protocols and that's where the mailto should be) that's sorted alphabetically. I've missed something more than once by not going through the whole thing. I can't verify that, as Windows 10 isn't sorted that way.
Also check that email programs are available in the default programs - it will go something like this: Default Programs applet >Set program access and computer defaults>  Expand the Custom selection.

I found one suggestion that looks workable. I don't have Windows 7 so I can't test it, and I recommend a back up and/or making a restore point before making any changes.
1. Brink (sevenforums, tenforums, etc) has a reg file that should restore the protocol. I've downloaded reg and bat files from his sites for years and they've all been safe. The reg file sets Windows Live Mail as the program, but if the mailto protocol is restored you can change it in default programs. It's in the 4th post. The thread might be worth a read:
Mailto protocol missing Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums

If that doesn't work, the registry key might be missing or corrupted. Click Start, type regedit, and choose it when it appears in the list. If you make any changes back up registry first: Inside regedit, click File > Export.
The key should be here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\shell\open\command\ <default email>

If it's missing, I'm not sure how to restore it in Windows 7. You can search or you can do an in place reinstall of Windows 7.
Directions are here, I would create a back up of the whole hard drive before doing a reinstall.

I use Firefox, and it's set as the default browser. Any way to add Firefox as a default email app option? I've seen posts where people suggest regedit changes. Is that the option?

A Perfect Contact Management System for Small Businesses

Till 1990, every big and small business used to collect customer contacts by manually visiting client sites. Business cards and paper forms used to be the highest means of customer data. But during the age of the internet, a single sign-up form, a product purchase using email IDs, an online community account and social media accounts are major databases of customer contacts.

In the previous article, we understood what a contact management system is and how it impacts an organisation’s inbound marketing activities. In this article, we will understand reasons for a small business to consider building a perfect contact management system.

Before that, let us understand – What is a Contact?

A Contact can be explained as anyone who receives the end result of marketing, sales, or engagement activities conducted by a company. If a company targets potential customers individually as per buyer persona or if the customers interact with a business due to the result of a mass marketing, everyone becomes a contact for the company.

However, the contact needs to be frequently updated based on the stage of the buying process. Tracking all these activities is called Stage Tracking, and this tracking becomes an input for improving an existing contact management system.

What is a ‘perfect’ contact management system?

As explained earlier, a contact management system is a foundation of storing, updating and adding customer details as per recent interaction. It is a database that mostly, during initial days, contains common customer information across industries – Email ID, First Name, Last Name, Contact Number, Address, Payment Options, etc.

However, as you keep upgrading this system to become an integral part of your Customer Relationship Management (CRM), then you try to fetch further more information, such as – how they are responding to your marketing strategies? How are they engaging with the contents posted on social media networks? Which page did they visit frequently on your site? Which product did they search for on your site? Did they buy the product or added the product in the cart and forgot? What information did they query while interacting with customer care? What’s that status of any issue reported by the customer?

Both can be downloaded here:

There is a vulnerability in Firefox. Mozilla has released a patched version. If you use Firefox, it’s a good idea to update or download a new version, according to how you prefer to update Firefox.
Both update and download are mentioned in the article because people use both ways to update.
I’m not suggesting any options for anyone. I'm suggesting get the patched version, however you prefer to do that.
Whether it's through an update (automatically or manually inside the browser while it's running), downloading and installing the new version over the old version, or performing a clean install, it's a good idea to get the patched version in whatever way works for you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I supplied the link to the official Firefox site for downloading all languages/platforms so people don't have to search for it, if they prefer to download Firefox.

For me it destroyed my userChrome file by ignoring it altogether and my user interface was completely changed tabs, color, everything. I always have updated with no problems until then. I disabled updates in the registry and will not ever update again until they hire some people that know what they're doing. How to Restore SearchUI.exe Back?
Many people have asked how can they restore SearchUI.exe back. In order to restore it, you have to rename the SearchUI.exe file back to it’s original name.

  1. Start elevated command prompt. In order to do so, press the Win+X key combination and then choose Command prompt (Admin) from the menu that shows up on your screen.
  2. In the command prompt window type this command and press Enter:
    cd %windir%\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy
    rename SearchUI.exe.001 SearchUI.exe
  3. Restart Windows and SearchUI.exe will begin working again.

I used the batch file to remove SearchUI.exe, and it also got rid of the search function of programs on the computer. I did not know this was part of Cortana. (ie. Click on the Start button, then type to search, such as for "Control Panel") I wasn't expecting it to remove that as well. How do I undo this removal?

1) To display the old about:config interface, in the address bar type: chrome://global/content/config.xul.
2) The list of entries displays immediately, there's no warning page.

1) type: chrome://global/content/config.xul > No period.

2) Not on my machine. I see > https://i.postimg.cc/5NH2sw6D/png-3702.png

Hmmmm. I'm not sure what that's about.
I have this in place on my desktop and laptop and any searches from the Start Menu are unchanged, pressing the Windows key opens the Start menu. Searches from Windows File Explorer are intact, searches using the Win + R keyboard shortcut are working....all that occurs at the moment is to make sure Search is running in Task Manager or Services. That's the only thing I know of that would cause this, but there could be other causes I don't know about.

This causes search from the start menu to stop working as well. I can't press the windows key and type the name of a program to search for it in the start menu.

Lol yep we can hope, move to Linux, join the Apple universe, opt to use Android/Apple mobile devices instead of a desktop or laptop, or keep a close eye on our computers. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I still have the mindset that "it's my computer, I built it, don't mess with it".

@rhiannon,

How could you say such a thing! To think that M$...I mean MS would ever dare to counter it's Windows users with such tactics...HAHAHAH! And then we all woke up, right!

Yeah, I thought the same thing as soon as I read the article. All we can do, I guess, is hope!
