What an interesting find. Thanks Rob, for your help for us. There's no reason Geeks like us and those reading should not keep this one on their flashdrive on their car key chain.
All your articles are usually great finds. Thanks for your efforts. Now send me that $20 you said you would give me for a good write up.
Just kidding, all. At 70 years old, I cannot be bought and anyone that knows me, knows that. My wife says I do not "have a filter", nor can my opinion be bought. Most of the time, it gets me into trouble. Not this time, however.
Not sure if it's just me being dumb but this simply does not do anything that I can see. I can't fathom how it's supposed to get the clipboard contents into it, nor how you get them back.
If you cycle through the options tabs it gives an exception handler error and closes.
Maybe it's me...
Ditto is really technically good, fast and light. But it has minimalistic non-standart UI and some other issues for me...
I tryed to begin using Ditto many times in last 10 years but unreliable execution of Paste command in non english input language kills my attempts every time. So my Clip Angel was done with big attention to reliability, compatibility and conveniency of main functions - find the right piece of data and send paste with it.
I could not find in Ditto way to quickly switch on/off word wrap. Clip Angel has many hot switches (tool buttons) allowing quick change many combination of modes.
Ditto UI requires to manually switch focus to filter field by pressing TAB to begin filtering. Clip Angel does it automatically - pressing UP/DOWN/PgDown/PgUp you select clip in list and in the same time pressing symbol keys, Backspace, RIGHT/LEFT, ... you change text filter.
I could not find how to turn on HTML rendering in Ditto. Clip Angel has good support for HTML rendering with switched on "Native formatting" mode.
If your current clipboard manager satisfies you then no need to waste time trying every new one. I made Clip Angel because none of existing satisfies me. I tried about 30 of tem and my top 2 were: AceText and ClipDiary. I am coder/developer. So my most actions on PC are related to writting code.
Some people like minimal UI. CLCL is the best for them.
Other like speed, fuctionality and then minimal UI. Ditto is the best for them.
I am not from those 2 groups. So I made my Clip Angel =)
About image preview. Due to small row height only left top fragment 100x20 pixels is shown in each row of list without resize. Whole image resized to fit clip panel (right part of window) is show for current clip. Can you describe your ideas about how to make it better? For now I have only one idea - to show tooltip with image of clip under cursor, but it can be annoying due to it's big size and changing position.
No error messages, nothing happens. I read the reference to Vista + as meaning it does not work on earlier versions of Windows. I don't know what .Net 4.52 framework is, or how to tell if is installed. There is a .Net 3.51 SP1 on the computer.
Odd, I tried to install using your link and get this:
Details
.NET Framework 4.5.2 or a later update is already installed on this computer.
I then looked in the registry (now I know how) and found Net framework 4.6.01055
And now, tried 1.17 and it works. No idea what problem was - thanks.
Hi, thanks for your reply and for a nice piece of freeware : )
When I first tried your program I saw no graphic previews at all, just locations the same as in the left hand pane. After experimenting a bit further though, I've found that graphic previews are shown for jpg files from my hard drive but not if I right click and copy an image in Firefox. For png files on my hard drive, ClipAngel shows previews for some but not all. It's not a big issue though, it's not something I would use often anyway.
The preview as it is, now that I have found it, is fine. No need at all to change that in my opinion.
I did wonder though, is there or could there be, a button to show/hide the right hand preview pane and only display the list? I know I can resize it but a toolbar button or hotkey would be handy.
Now I understand that you are talking about images in HTML clips. They can have many ways of linking to binary data. That's why some of them are shown always. some are show for a while (from temp files) and some are not shown at all. Many factors may influence this behavour. So if you want reliably copy image from browser you have to execute "Copy image" command in the context menu of image or capture it directly with screenshot capture soft.
You say it can be installed or stand alone, but I can not find an installer, when I open the zip file I downloaded it extracts all files, then when I click on CickAngel.exe it runs as a stand alone program. Where do I find the installer?
I am author of ClipAngel. You are right. Actually there is no installer but 2 modes of starting application (from ReadMe.txt):
No actions required in addition to the system requirements for installing program. You can run program from any catalog, but the program will use single settings and database, stored in Windows user profile, in normal mode and in program catalog - in portable mode. To autostart program on user logon, you have to turn on appropriate checkbox in Settings window. ClipAngelPortable.bat or parameter /p - runs application in portable mode, settings and standart database will be loaded/saved in the same catalog, where program is started.
I use Ditto which works fine for me, and I'd like to give a warning about clipboard managers in general.
If you use a clipboard manager to copy a password, that password will remain in the clipboard manager until it is deleted. So, if you do use a clipboard manager to copy and paste passwords, immediately remove that password from the clipboard manager.
Very good advice. But if you use good password manager (like KeePass) which can set Clipboard Viever Ignore Format (CVIF) while coping password to clipboard, then good clipboard manager (like ClipAngel or Ditto or ClipDiary) will understand this flag and will not capture password. Discussion about CVIF for Ditto https://sourceforge.net/p/ditto-cp/discussion/287511/thread/2185c0e1/ . And do not forget to turn on CVIF in options of KeePass 2.X (it is off by default)
I have tested dozens clipboard programs over the 10 years and took the best (for me) from them and made ClipAngel =) It can do everything you wrote and many more (as you can see in feature list and in comparison table https://sourceforge.net/p/clip-angel/wiki/Description/)
I have installed Clip Angel a hour ago and, so far, it is being very useful! :-)
I agree with rob: it's a really nice and powerful clipboard manager. Thanks to rob for this article, many thanks to tormozit for the great job! *thumbsup*
Exactly! I have never seen another clipboard manager that lets you enter your own clips and save them, and paste when needed, this keeps me coming back to ClipX!
Very weak reason to choose clipboard manager. You can copy any piece of text from any place (even from other clip in clipboard manager) to make new clip and then you can edit it and it will be stored like usual clip. There are many clipboard managers that allow to do this (for ex. Ditto, ClipAngel).

Since this does not work in XP
XP users could use Ditto instead
This is the latest version that works in XP (32bit) -
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ditto-cp/files/Ditto/3.21.134.0/
I tried the latest 4 to prove that 3.21.134 is the most recent that works in XP
I was only trying the portable versions.
There is a slight chance that the installed versions will give a different result ? ?
Anyone who wishes to experiment with those, can find them here -
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ditto-cp/files/Ditto/
Rob
PS I am willing to give ClipAngel a go (in XP).
I am a bit worn out, but anyone who is interested, could do similar experiments with older versions of ClipAngel -
https://sourceforge.net/projects/clip-angel/files/
If you post the result (previous version that works in XP), I will Shirley give it a try.
I have a very specific set of requirements that include:
- tiny memory footprint (<5MB)
- truly portable (no dependency on any framework, including .NET)
- easy to trigger (Win + V or simpler)
- ability to format/manipulate text in the buffer
- ability to store/organize permanent snippets
ClipX was my go-to clipboard manager for many years, but it didn't play well with Windows 10, so I spent a lot of time trying out all the clipboard managers I could find to find an alternative. I finally settled on Clibor, and have never looked back. It's amazing how much power was crammed into such a small utility. If you can get past the crowded interface and sporadic wonky translations, I highly recommend giving Clibor an honest try.
For a small (48MB-Installed), yet complete Office Suite, Please check out:
Ashampoo Office 2010 is FREE... Works very well,...
Should cover almost everyone's needs...
Installed it is a little less than 48 MB...
It can be Downloaded from the link below:
http://www.softmaker.de/reg/ash10_en.htm
From that link:
_________________________________________________________
Thank you for the recommendation but Ashampoo Office 2010 is really SoftMaker Office - they even say so on their site. What puzzles me is why recommend a 2010 office suite when you can get the free 2016 version directly from SoftMaker themselves?
http://www.freeoffice.com/en/
That's what I use and what I would recommend. I am sure it can easily fulfill the needs of almost all private users.
Open Office doesn't nag me to update every month and I tend to stay loyal to programs that don't make frivolous changes simply to appear "new and improved".
I prefer softmaker myself. Had used the free WPS for a long time until they said I had pay for it to continue using it. This was about two months ago. Don't know if the policy has changed. Boo
I am a little older and used WordPerfect in DOS while it was still a good program. Then over the years have tried a number of Office Suites. SoftMaker has become the best for me now for a number of years. Every year you can get a free copy and SoftMaker makes a donation to a charity opportunity for each copy downloaded. They are top of the line in Deutschland!
Rob,
You said "It reads Word, Excel and PowerPoint files just fine"
Does it write them (compatible) as well ?
Rob
PS I am a control freak, and W10 is the exact opposite.
I was going to live with Windows Defender, but discovered it is doing Scans (even inside Zip files), even when I have not told it to do a scan.
A new machine may not notice that, but it slows the hades out of my older PC, and I like to control when it does it's scans.
Also there are occasions when one wishes to disable the anti virus. It is 5 times easier to disable Avast Free, and it stays off until I tell it to return. Windows Defender will turn itself on when it feels like it.
I am using WPS Office on my laptop and android version on tablet. I followed your recommendation on this office some time ago when it was Kingsoft. I like it, only thing I worried about is adverts in android version, but now realize it was the program not spam! Hope they keep this office going forever! Thanks to you you've helped me on lots of the programs
"subscribe to Office 365 for around $10 a month"
"a software product that would otherwise cost you at least $100 a year."
To correct those, the ~$100/year Home version is for 5 users, so ~$20 each.
For a single user, the Personal version has all the main desktop apps for ~$55-60.
Yup, Nirsofer's Nirsoft has a tool for just about anything you might need or want for Windows.
@Rob, - After months of proper functioning, one of my laptops began having the same exact problem which (after much digging and troubleshooting) I only managed to fix by uninstalling my third-party Windows Firewall utility, (Binisoft's "Windows Firewall Control - WFC") and resetting Windows Firewall to defaults; uninstalling the WiFi adapter and *deleting* its driver; then, rebooting and reinstalling the adapter, followed by the firewall utility. So far, after about six hours, all remains well . ~;-)
My difficulties began while I was traveling and repeatedly switched back-and-forth between two ISP's (via tethering to my phone) without first shutting down the firewall; and perhaps, even rebooting for good measure. I know you know how to fix your problem but I hope sharing my experience is helpful.
I installed this program on windows 10 pro, and all I see is a blank space. I did the F9 like instructed, and that too is a blank space with nothing in it. Nothing that tells me about any network connections.
May be useful at a future date re a location that does not have daylight savings time or on a different schedule. For the rest, kinda simple to enter in a location on your iPhone Time app or on a PC and get the current time. I can't see myself using this.
It's hard to believe that in the early days of MS-DOS, before Windows was even thought of, there was no support for folders or directories on a disk. Are you sure???
I am fairly certain that directories and folders were around before Windows.
a) there is a limit of 256 entries in root.
b) products such as Xtree were around before Windows.
c) why would DOS limit it on PCs when the concept had been around for years under DOS on other machines.
Yes Burn-IT they were around before Windows. I think the editor refers to MS-DOS 1.0, a renamed version of QDOS in 1981, which did not support a hierarchical file system. It was only added to MS-DOS 2.0 in 1983. (Ref: MS-DOS: A Brief Introduction; The MS-DOS File System)
According to Wikipedia, the first release of XTree was in 1985, i.e. after MS-DOS had supported the hierarchical file system.
Great utility Rob.
I have used this program for the last 7 years, and it is indispensable
Always has ranked in the top 5 freeware utilities on my computers
If you have a lot of data, with lots of file and folders, these programs are great for navigation
For example, when you are downloading files, and you are using the "Save as..." dialog box
An alternative is 'Listary', which is also found on reputable freeware sites
There wasn't that many files (or even clusters) that would fit on a floppy-disk which was the standard storage device for such microcomputers. The floppy-disk provided relatively random data access and was a step up from sequential access devices like cassette tape drives and stringy floppy drives.
A tree/hierarchical file system was only needed once there were larger storage devices like hard disks.
DOS as an acronym for Disk Operating System is a very common name for many different computer operating systems that have not much in common except their name. While MS-DOS and PC-DOS are often shortened to DOS, they are no relation to any of the following operating systems (OS) - all of which I used in the 1980s.
Mainframe OS like IBM DOS (DOS/360).
Minicomputer OS like DEC DOS and Datapoint DOS.
Microcomputer OS including Apple DOS, CBM (Commodore) DOS, Cromenco DOS, Ohio Scientific Pico DOS, and Atari DOS.
How can everyone overlook TRS-DOS as used on the TRS-80 (affectionately known as the Trash-80) from Tandy Radio Shack?
Aside from that, unless the article has been edited since the first post by Burn-IT, at least by the time I saw it, the reference was to "the early days of MS-DOS", also known as PC-DOS when purchased from IBM, not merely "DOS".
Anyone remember the CP/M?
According to Wikipedia: "(Control Program / Monitor), microcomputer operating system; a precursor to the IBM PC-compatible disk operating systems (DOS)."
It had commands like COPY A:FILE.TXT B: (B: the second floppy drive!)
It could be used on many different types of computers before the DOS arrived but many of the commands were the same.
I just use the "pin" function to put special folders readily available. The PIN works just like it does with many of Microsoft Office and also several browsers. Right click on "File Explorer", in this example, and select the folder.
Maybe I am missing something but a quick look seems to just bring up nothing more that Explorer and the Quick Access menu which I have used since the inception with W7 if I recall correctly. I have Free Commander XE but have not spent time learning it but should. I have almost all the time close to half a dozen Explorer windows on the TB which allows me quick access to things I might be working on at some specific time. Things I might use frequently, I simply pin to the QA and then can drag/drop between panes when moving or copying files.
And what is wrong with just typing the name of the folder you want in the Windows 10 search window? Works like a charm to find any folder just by putting in the a few letters of the folder's name. Duh!
It's quite good at just the same that is being described AND offers a ton of other twists & tweaks on top of that.
It's free for personal use: http://www.listary.com/
Right - it will update your computer which will override the DNS settings on the router. This can be very handy if, for example, you want to use OpenDNS's kids-safe servers that will block unsafe, porn, etc sites on the kids computer but don't want blocks on the others. (or block all systems from the router but override on one)
Also, if you're wanting to access US-only services (like Hulu) from Canada or Britain, for example, some DNS servers present you as coming from the US, allowing access to those services. (like #22) These however are not fast DNS servers, so its handy to then switch it back to your fast ones after use.
On the same topic, Google allows you to route your calls through its own DNS servers. It claims they are faster and more secure. More information's available here: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/
An interesting side note. Read the last paragraph of the "Readme" file in the Dns Jumper download from http://www.sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v1-0-5/, focusing on the last two words, "Dns Changer". Then look at:
and then google "Dns changer". It's just something I noticed that may have nothing to do with the Dns Changer script mentioned in the Readme, or with Dns Jumper, but it does suggest some questions.
We are the developers of the Dns Jumper , Dns jumper is not relevant to Dns changer, and unfortunately Dns Helper's developer (he has stolen the dns Jumper's first version's code , please compare The Dns jumper's first version's release date and Dns helper's first version's release dates) spreading childish lies for example ; Dns Jumper caused him to stopping using the internet , or bluescreen ... (nonsense) Dns Jumper downloaded more than 1.500.000 times and it is the world's first portable virus - free Dns changing App , and v1.0.5 ist the worl's firs Portable IPv6 virus-free dns changing App , till now Nobody Complained like that except dns Helper's developer he try to calumniate our freeware , probably because of the lack of ability to develop better Application
Please use Dns Jumper's latest version (v1.0.5)
Best Regards
Sordum.org TEAM
Here is a way to test which DNS servers are actually fastest for your particular machine. < https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm > What is fastest for one person in a certain location may not be fastest for another person in a different location. I use OpenDNS because of the features, regardless of whether or not it is the fastest.
The latest version as of today, 6 June 2015, is 1.0.6 and the GUI is somewhat changed from earlier versions - there is no backup function like the one in the screenshot above - I could not find a reason why.
A direct link to the DNS Jumper page is at http://www.sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v1-0-6/ where there is a good tutorial as well.

The best is still CLCL : http://www.nakka.com/soft/clcl/index_eng.html

CLCL works perfectly for me, Cheers harrym! Only thing is, how do you get it to autostart with Windows 10?
Exactly. Ditto surpasses any other clipboard manager. This is one of my most heavily used utilities.
I tried several and the tool I liked most is RClipStep. So easy and practical (and free)
As long as ClipX works in the latest Windows, I see no reason to change.
Clipboard Help+Spell is very good too:

boristhemoggy this article should get things sorted! https://www.howtogeek.com/208224/how-to-add-programs-files-and-folders-to-system-startup-in-windows-8.1/

Nice find : ) I've been through no end of clipboard managers for something that suits my needs, this one seems light and stable so far.
It appears to lack image preview but I can live with that and maybe there's some setting somewhere that I missed.
Does not work in Windows 7: "Requires .Net Framework 4.52 (Windows Vista+/Server 2008+)"
Can you describe details (error text or screen)? Have you installed .Net framework 4.52 before start?

1clipboard is great and it syncs all data with your good drive account so it can sync all your info on many computers

It appears this does not work in XP
You're right and it's honestly written everywhere:
Requires .Net Framework 4.52+ (Windows Vista+/Server 2008+)
I have tested many clipboard programs over the year, and greatly prefer Clipboard Help+Spell because:
1. It allows you to have Favorites to use and reuse
2. It's easy to delete a clip from the listing (e.g. passwords)
3. It works with text and images equally well
4. It has an extensive history of previously used clips
I have tested dozens clipboard programs over the 10 years and took the best (for me) from them and made ClipAngel =) It can do everything you wrote and many more (as you can see in feature list and in comparison table https://sourceforge.net/p/clip-angel/wiki/Description/)

Thanks Rob.
Very good to know about this free option we have!
Ads are a minor nuisance.
Regards
Peter.
I still favour Open Office. It can't handle some of the high end macros that Excel uses but in general it's fabulous. I'd not try anything else now.
Been using this for a couple of years now it gets the job done well
For a small (48MB-Installed), yet complete Office Suite, Please check out:
Ashampoo Office 2010 is FREE... Works very well,...
Should cover almost everyone's needs...
Installed it is a little less than 48 MB...
It can be Downloaded from the link below:

From that link:

Thxs for the heads up on the ads. Sticking with LibreOffice, no ads
Thanks anyway, but LibreOffice works for me and has been a faithful companion for a long time. And .... No ads!
Ditto here.
I prefer softmaker myself. Had used the free WPS for a long time until they said I had pay for it to continue using it. This was about two months ago. Don't know if the policy has changed. Boo
My suggestions are, for a full suite, LibreOffice and for a ligther one, SoftMaker. Both free and ads free.
g
So when Softmaker 2012 offered an update to 2016 version it wasn't trying to sell me the update? I use Textmaker sometimes.
It seems to write .xls and .doc but not .xlsx and .docx. Maybe that's a full version 'feature'.
Thanks Rob.
Thanks Rob!
Very useful portable program. As you say, another excellent NirSoft product.
Peter
Nothing that tells me about any network connections.
...So, what exactly did this utility tell you about your wireless connection that enabled you to fix the problem? Don't leave us in suspense.
(Some suggest that the only solution for a router that keeps dropping a connection is to get a new router.)
I have the same problem with this programme.
May be useful at a future date re a location that does not have daylight savings time or on a different schedule. For the rest, kinda simple to enter in a location on your iPhone Time app or on a PC and get the current time. I can't see myself using this.
https://www.timeanddate.com/ is a superb website with numerous free services.

DOS was around before PCs was one of the points I was trying to make.
I was using DOS on "mainframe" machines well before PCs were available.
DOS was around before PCs
I was using it on "mainframes" before th PC was invented.
DOS as an acronym for Disk Operating System is a very common name for many different computer operating systems that have not much in common except their name. While MS-DOS and PC-DOS are often shortened to DOS, they are no relation to any of the following operating systems (OS) - all of which I used in the 1980s.
How can everyone overlook TRS-DOS as used on the TRS-80 (affectionately known as the Trash-80) from Tandy Radio Shack?
Aside from that, unless the article has been edited since the first post by Burn-IT, at least by the time I saw it, the reference was to "the early days of MS-DOS", also known as PC-DOS when purchased from IBM, not merely "DOS".
still no support for being able to have tooltip comments for each folder and file!
Why not use the favorites/quick access feature built into explorer, visible in the top left of the screenshot?...
It's a Geek Off!
Duh!
Personally, I am using Listary instead.
It's quite good at just the same that is being described AND offers a ton of other twists & tweaks on top of that.
It's free for personal use: http://www.listary.com/
You might give that one a try, too.
More information's available here: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/
yes, been using dns helper for years and its always worked fast and easy....tried and true.
Received to daily e-mail > The current article with the highest user rating at Gizmo's is "A Quick Way to Change or Check your DNS Setting"
The article is 20 months old ,with current available speeds is it likely to be of any use to anyone now ?
An interesting side note. Read the last paragraph of the "Readme" file in the Dns Jumper download from http://www.sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v1-0-5/, focusing on the last two words, "Dns Changer". Then look at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNSChanger
and then google "Dns changer".
