Some great tiny apps can be found at vtaskstudio including TyperTask.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Other-Office-Tools/TyperTask.s...

IMHO, TyperTask slays Quick Text Paste in feature set. However, one very annoying aspect of TyperTask is you have to remember to minimize the configuration window. Closing the config window closes the app.

I also use Texter and love it. It allows for instant text replacement via self-generated shortcuts. It has a 3k footprint, and placed in my Start Menu folder it starts with Windows - set at startup and it does the rest.

For example to sign-off with my name I simply type "bp" (without the quotes), hit the tab key, and get the following:

Regards,
BearPup

P.S. Its also available from Softpedia: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/LH-Texter.shtml.

The biggest problem I have with Audacity is the UI, functionalitywise it often outperforms ie. Audition.
Luckily many things are addressed here while also explaining how to further customize the UI to your liking: http://www.darkaudacity.com

Nice software but ultimately beaten by Wavosaur imho, not least because the latter supports realtime VST processing.

Audacity is very bad. It lacks some important features e.g.
- No volume change by % (only in db)
- No 'Fit-to-selection'
- vertical and horizontal sliders not auto-hideable
- No support for AC3
- No zoom in to original level after a some zoom outs
- 'Save changes before closing' at exit cannot be (optional) suppressed (=auto-answered by NO)
... many more

I used this for a couple of years when I was doing stuff that required the creation of documents with a lot of standard "boilerplate" text. I found it very useful, user-friendly and certainly a real time-saver. A pretty good program.

It's already a big big time-saver.

"Autover can run as a portable program, active only when you choose it to be."

While it is possible to extract the files from the installer and make it portable, I think you really meant to say it can be used on-demand.

view
Automatic Backups To Folder Or FTP 4 years 10 months ago mchldpy

On the website the author says it "CAN" be 100% portable. He then states in parenthesis that, "it can be installed on removable media". That doesn't tell you whether or not the app will write to the registry. I see he is Australian, perhaps portable means putting a removable drive in your pocket when your that far south.

Automatic Warning If You're About To Install Unwanted Software 6 years 2 months ago zep321

Hi Rob,

And a happy new year to you.

This "Unchecky" looked interesting and I went to the website to download.
I almost forgot to check with Virus Total but at the last second scanned
it before downloading. Result was 4 of 51 anti-virus engines deemed it as
malicious.

I know you guys always refer to scanning before downloading. Did you get the same results?

program?

Automatic Warning If You're About To Install Unwanted Software 6 years 2 months ago MidnightCowboy I'm happy enough with this product but users should make up their own minds as to what they trust to install on their computer. Softpedia finds it clean, as does Dr.Web which I used to scan the download link in real time. http://imageshack.us/a/img545/9787/p7qg.png There is also this notice posted in their FAQ: My antivirus flags Unchecky as malicious. It's a false positive. Please report about it to your antivirus company. Note that Unchecky was tested thoroughly by Softpedia and was found 100% clean. Nevertheless, it is a beta status product so some bugs should be expected. http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Unchecky.shtml view

This program was recently reported in one of the other sites that I visit daily and I tried it out. It must have been on my computer for at least 2 weeks when another person mentioned it - and that's when I remembered I had put it on my computer. During that time I had downloaded and installed several programs, and not once had it raised a warning.

The bottom line is that its still in beta testing - check its version number, its less than 1.0! Yes, its a great idea, and no, its not ready for primetime yet! Bottom line, read what you're doing before you blindly click on 'Yes, Install'.

I recommend WinPatrol, formerly Scotty, for this purpose. WinPatrol is a Windows guard dog and much more.

http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

It's a FREE program, but I bought it to show my gratitude to the developer. It is very helpful, and sits silently in the tray until something installs, even if you didn't start the installation. It is watching all installations, and warns if something extraordinary happens. I'm using the old Scotty (a Terrier) sound, and have fun by setting it to bark as a warning.
I have used it, and use it on XP, 7, 8 and 8.1. WinPatrol is HIGHLY recommended!

to anyone who has used this: if download is grouped with something (ex. open candy), will it selectively remove open candy and allow download to commence cleanly without it? or will it just kill entire download. curious, because many antivirus (ex. avg) also will detect unwanted software (such as open candy) during download and kill download with warning. so this maybe redundant depending on your antivirus(?).

Automatically Colorize Black and White Photos Online For Free 1 year 1 month ago Bramy

Had some fun with this. Thanks.

I uploaded a screenshot from an old black & white western movie. The image was a landscape with cattle and cowboys etc. The result was pretty good but as far as getting what I'd guess the correct colours would be but overall a bit washed out.

Next I uploaded an image of another landscape, one which had been in colour but I had used greyscale to make it black & white. The results weren't that great. The original colour image featured a brown car in the foreground, pine trees to the left, a signpost with red paint on it to the right and in the background snow covered hills. The result after colorizing was a grey car, dark coloured sign (can't really detect what colour it is, pine trees okay but green colour bleeding into some of the adjacent area making the snow green there. Not good.

I recall having previously using another colorizing site (or perhaps it was this one) and uploading the image of "The Rifelman" from the old TV series as he walks down the street in the intro. The colours were really good.

Thanks.

It was fun running 40+ images through it. I didn't have great results with the color images that were converted to grayscale either.

Hi, thanks- this has a very user friendly GUI.

I use RedshiftGUI, which allows colour control better than f.lux, and uses half the memory of Sunset Screen.

http://maoserr.github.io/projects/redshiftgui/

(Noted Sunset Screen requires .NET 3.5 or higher - I don't think RedshiftGUI does).

RedshiftGUI is also sensitive to geographic location, which you can look up by IP address, which means (hopefully!) the times adjust accordingly.

Had this programme working automatically on my old laptop and forgot all about it then bought a new PC with a big monitor 6 months ago and have been struggling with eye strain - even considered replacing the brand new monitor which, no matter how much I played with the brightness, didn't get rid of the problem. Feeling the immediate benefit again (I use it during the day too). Thanks for the email!

All of these applications share a fatal flaw as far as I'm concerned. None of them could automatically detect full-screen applications (games, movies..etc), so they interfere with their colors. And manually disabling and enabling as a solution is just absurd.

view
Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 5 years 2 days ago rob.schifreen I actually have another PC and monitor which I use at work, purely to watch the system that monitors all of the servers I look after. I didn't want it to be overly bright or distracting. By fiddling with the brightness, colour and contrast, I did manage to get the picture to be sufficiently non-bright. But something like F.lux or Sunset Screen is clearly simpler. view

Was the flicker very slight and approx every 10 seconds? If so, this should be fixed for version 1.18. Try again and see what you think.

view
Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 5 years 1 day ago beergas

Thanks! Just tried Portable which seems to be v 1.18 and isn't flickering 3-4x a second like installed one last night, VERY noticeable. Not sure if issue will occur at night but will leave it in place and test it w/ & w/o f-lux active (active at moment). Couldn't use it at all at nite.

view
Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 5 years 1 day ago twinbee

Did you have Flux open at the time? Make sure Flux is closed before testing. Was the flickering during the time it said "Transitioning to night" or "Transitioning to day" at the top right? If so, that may not be fixed then for you. If that happens again, please let me know, and then try changing the transition phase to 10 seconds, and see if the problem is lessened or gone.

Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 5 years 1 day ago Joe A.TT

As mentioned in my other post ( see www.techsupportalert.com/content/reminder-if-you-use-windows-just-get-fl... ) when I tried F.lux I found it too reddish for me. I also wasn't happy that it didn't have a portable version. Well, I have been trying SunsetScreen for the past week and I like it. It gives me better control over the colors and there's a portable version that's stealth too. I have also been in contact with the developer and I find he's very responsive - another plus.

Now, I know some people aren't too fond of programs running all the time, but you can easily overcome that by creating a task in Task Scheduler. Configure the task to start SunsetScreen at, say, 35 mins before sunset everyday and you're good to go. You can even add the argument "/hidewindow" (without quotes) to make it start silently in the system tray. In fact, when I raised a query with the developer, it was he who told me about that argument/parameter.

Personally, I've even started to experiment with the "Day" color. If I manage to adjust the color such that it would reduce the daytime strain on my eyes then it would be doubly useful.

It's a keeper so far.

[Edit]
It looks like the developer has joined us.

Welcome Daniel errr... I mean twinbee. It's always nice to see a developer taking such a keen interest in his software. :-)

no cam so using f-lux- wow what a difference.....what is freaking me out a bit though is that u go to the link and it knew my exact location down to the street where i am.....just can't figure how, no personal ID/ info on this machine.....all i can think is the ISP is somehow collaborating with them?

view
Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 5 years 1 day ago Remah There are options other than blaming your ISP. Most PCs are uniquely identified and their geographics locations are often very precisely identified from information gathered with or without your permission on the Internet. At the highest level, most IP addresses are allocated to organizations (ISPs and the like) so their country and maybe city or region/province are known. Accuracy increases further from more detailed location-aware services. You can even read about specific applications. Firefox web browser is upfront about this in their Firefox FAQ on the same topic. view

view
Automatically Dim Your PC Screen In The Evening 5 years 1 day ago Remah If you haven't opted in then Firefox isn't doing it - I just used them as an example of being more open about what happens if you do. Your issue is much more likely to result from something less obvious, like Google. view

I hope this might help. I have assigned "network drives" on my husband computer Win7 through network setting and have essential files being backed up through our network onto his computer.

Or if it might be better (i haven't done this on my computer but have kinda on my table so please google how to do it exactly) you should be able to use personal cloud. I use Box i now have over 50gb for free for 2 years and i can upload anything and it has never fail.

On the technical side I'm not sure how they handle that, but the updates that have been installed on my system that I'm certain have PUP's that you have to opt out of (Adobe Flash for one) haven't been added. I've had Patch My PC install two different Flash updates (all versions including NPAPI because I use Firefox) and the PUP's weren't included. That's one of the things I looked at before mentioning the program. I'll add it to the article. :)

Some programs like Adobe Flash have pages on their websites where programs without PUP's can be downloaded. These are useful for site admins who have to upgrade multiple systems. These pages are not easy to find. I've been downloading Adobe Flash updates from their site that's a straight download, no PUPs, since they started adding the PUP's. That might be one option Patch My PC uses.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
