# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
i then went and saved it to my desktop after adding the line
# 2.18.213.82 redirmetasevices.microsoft.com
when i go to save it it gives me two choices,
save as type: text documents (*.txt), or all files , the encoding is ANSI.
i get a message that reads
c: windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.text
you don't have permission to save in this location.
contact the administrator to obtain permission
then it asks me if i would like to save to my documents instead.
i am the system administrator, i am in my administrator account. i don't use this account, unless i'm installing programs that i want to be accessed from any other windows account or guest account. so why am i not allowed access, or do i have to enter through the area where i shut down drivers to do this?
Gotcha, I thought you were referencing the Major Geeks download link I put in one of my comments, not TheWindows Club attribution link at the bottom of the article.
I've edited that link so it goes to the home page of TheWindowsClub, that way no one will be be confused about where the download link is in that article, and it is easy to miss.
Be careful. If the software was installed by the computer manufacturer, these key finders will likely return a one-time bulk installer product code which won't work again. I've been burnt by this more than a few times.
Key finders work fine with a manually inputted product code.
Are you saying your anti-virus blocked the Softpedia download site? That would be quite unusual.
If it's blocking the author's site I would test it with at least one other anti-virus site or program, it's likely to be a false positive. I was not blocked from accessing the site by my anti-virus program and received no warnings using multiple browsers.
As to why it's identifying something on the site as PUP I don't know. Some anti-virus programs are over active and deliver a large amount of false positives - it's best practice to test anything your anti-virus program identifies as a threat with other sources.
I recommend using the Softpedia download link in the article, or the Major Geeks download site I mentioned here in the comments. Major Geeks scans all the programs they have on their servers for malware. Pretty sure if there were a problem it would have been removed from the reputable download sites.
I mentioned in the article that due to the nature of the program (it acts like a password retrieval type program and scans the registry) some anti-virus programs will flag as malware. Any program that behaves that way will likely be tagged as malware. The author mentions this on the site.
The portable version brings up some flags in Virus Total and other testing sites, though the executable version does not.
I've installed both and scanned both using security software on my computers and neither was flagged, and the site wasn't blocked by my security software.
Thanks but now my antivirus reported:
Website blocked due to a PUP
Your antivirus blocked this website because it may contain a PUP.
We strongly recommend you do not continue.
I've been using this add-on with Vivaldi for a bit The only downside I could find is that it doesn't play well with some other add-ons. A simple reinstall will fix it every time though (so far).
Great site! Thank you. I like it too! :)
Downloaded some wallpaper files yesterday but now I cannot get to that site!!
Perhaps too many followers went there and crashed their server ???

Avast offline installer is also available for Windows. Its quite good and required one time downloading. You can read more about from https://offline.avastdl.com.
You can do that in the settings - the last line on the feature list in the article above is Dark, Light, and System themes. It's one of the first things I checked after I downloaded the program. :)
The Light theme seems to work fine, I tested all three.
Unless you can change the black GUI into something that looks normal, I ain't interested. Who ever said, "Thank god the program's black so it's more functional?

No worries the divorce lawyer is out of the picture. :)
Usually when anyone says something didn't work, I go back and do what it was I did and wrote about. I do that to make sure I didn't make a mistake or miss something. Then I say what I did - this and this and this so if it's different or I messed up it can be worked out. I'll help if I can, and I'm grateful when someone points something out or catches an error I've made.
Hmmm, that's odd.
To be clear, you're clicking the blue add to cart button for the platform you want and are taken to the checkout screen...the product is listed on the left, and the quantity is one, it says the product has been added to your cart, and when you select the Proceed to checkout it takes you back to the Proceed to check out page again?
If you have any ad blocking or security add-ons or extenstions, they might interfere, a system security program might interfere, and have you tried checking out using another browser?
I'm not sure location would be a factor,
I occasionally have problems with an overly enthusiastic security program installed on my computer - it prevents the oddest things in browsers and I have to add a filter or disable it for a bit.
I disabled SearchUI.exe as described above but I lost the ability to search from the Start menu and Run box as well as searching from Explorer's search box! Renaming SearchUI.exe.001 back to SearchUI.exe and restarting as described above made it all work again. Phew!
That particular program wouldn't work for me, I have several hundred passwords and the Basic version allows you to store 20 passwords for free. More than that and they charge fees for various plans.
You're very welcome. I found Bitwarden because I was having so many issues with Last Pass, especially on Firefox. I started using Bitwarden and haven't looked back. If you want autofill on a given site you have to set that in Bitwarden, it doesn't autofill universally, which I like.
I just now tried Bitwarden in comparison to Lastpass which I have used several years now.
Scenario: My bank has a "home page" at
https://landmarkcu.com/ that includes fields for username and password.
Within the functionality of the pages involved they seem to pass the values of these fields to the next page that is on
https://www.landmarkcuonline.com/....
Lastpass has for quite some time now "harassed ;-(" me with a warning message about that and I needed to give special permission for this web site internal action EVERY TIME I had to log in!
That is nothing bad but really ANNOYING if it happens like clockwork!
And forgive me, I understand the text in that "warning" message; my average customer would NOT!
Bitwarden just does that without a hiccup and without engaging me.
@Thetan207:
I don't think you are paranoid at all!
Passwords still are way too important, sadly but it is what it is.
The more eyes can and do see the source code of a password manager the better, IMHO at least.
Oops! I was preoccupied preparing our supper and wasn't "listening" to you carefully. Please forgive me and call the attorneys to call off the divorce! :)
I started with KeePass, then LastPass. Over a year ago I moved to Bitwarden and have not looked back. Excellent in all ways. I have it configured so that it does not autofill the passwords or forms, but requires an extra click to fill them. This adds an extra layer of security. It works very well for me and I recommend it to others all the time. Steve Gibson, (GRC.com) one of the world's top computer experts endorses LastPass in a blog, and BitWarden uses the same type of technology where your passwords never leave your computer or phone without first being totally encrypted.
I can't proceed beyond the viewing the cart. When I press "Proceed to checkout", after a few seconds, I'm back at the cart.
There is also a "discover what's recoverable" app for download which *does* present a trial software details form like the one you described but there's no download button there, just the form. Interestingly, when it comes to the country, Australia (where I am) is not on the list!
You don't have to provide accurate personal information. Way too many sites ask for personal information in my opinion.
I keep a few sets of credentials - disposable email addresses, a Google Voice phone number, etc for this purpose because I do a lot of registering and downloading of things in order to write this column.
The program is a full featured recovery program that you use on up to five computers, with unlimited amount of recoveries, for one year. This is clearly stated at the beginning of the article.
I guess you could classify it as trial ware, but historically trial programs revert to free version after 30 days, sometimes 90 days. This doesn't revert to a free version. I'm not sure what it reverts to, I haven't been able to find that information. My guess it that it reverts to a paid version but I don't know for sure.
I'm not sure what you mean by an paying for activation key? I ran this several different times on two hard drives and it recovered files with no problem. I was then able play the recovered mp3 files, open and edit text and document files, was able to open and edit images in Irfanview. At no point was I asked to purchase an activation key or anything else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It does, when you go to recover files, say you've used an activation key. It's in the article. It will keep telling you that, but since the license is unlimited for one year, they are not relevant. It may apply to the paid version.
Howdy, @Rhiannon, et al: I think you gals & guys are mistaken about this being "free", for one year or any other time period. You CAN download and test its ability to identify files that it "MAY" be able to recover but, then, you have to BUY an activation key to (try) and do so.
I installed and tried the delete and wipe feature. It was 43 video files. I went with the highest level of wipe. After ½ hour of waiting, three files remained including it's parent folder that I told it to delete. Ran it again on the folder and it removed two of the three. Finally deleted the last file by running it again. Not impressed.
Thanks. I looked there too and had the same luck. I think you're right that it reverts to the paid version after a year. Fortunately the only time I've ever needed to recover data was when Microsoft failed me. I'd been backing up a project I'd been working on for 11 months and the assignment ended. Then just to see if it would restore I tried and it didn't. Since then I've always kept my own backups in native format on an external drive. Even then I transfer it all to a newer disk every 3-4 years. Now I keep two external backups.

I'm very interested in a simple web filter and K9 appeared good on that purpose.
I agree, even if you've never been on the internet your data is out there. When possible I don't use personally identifiable information and yes, be on the lookout for scams and phishing.
Yes really, people are now becoming like data sources and companies just want to profit from that source. And problem is, how much you try, if you are on the internet, a lot of your personal information or your data in some form is already out there. No escaping from it. Only thing is you can do it, is to be careful with what data you share yourself knowingly, and where. And to be safe with your money, and look out for scam/phishing.
I agree, I dislike providing any personal information to an online entity. Some I have to, otherwise I have a few sets of credentials that I use that have none of my personal information attached to them. In my opinion people and their data are becoming nothing more and nothing less than a data source to be harvested and a revenue stream to an increasing amount of companies. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You're very welcome and I'm happy you like it. Thanks for input on Opera, I hadn't tested it there. Brave, Edge Chromium and Iridium worked fine, good to know Opera does too. :)
"when the program was run, the editing window was so large that the bottom "taskbar" was below the bottom of my screen, so I couldn't see the tools that create the arrows!"
I hate when that happens. For me it usually hides the button to move to the next step.
Glad it is sorted out now.
This is a nice quick little program.
Some of these images look odd. It may be that we're used to seeing the sun acting in a different direction, and the shadows can make ridges look like valleys and vice versa.

These two links will take you to sites where you can download the program:

and this one:

OK...use the link, then click Download...you will get a Page Reload pop-up, then it will go to Reimage Repair.
Yep that is a downside to some programs, I did mention it in the article above.
Ah I see, thank you. I've edited the link to resolve to their home page.

They ask for too much info and this is just trial software! No Thanks!
I am more than happy to provide them with a fake name, gender, email address, location, age, etc.
Yup. No doubt about it. BUs are the answer to most problems.
Backups are good. It took my hard disk drive dying and taking all my data with it for me to learn. Tape drive. It was a while ago. :)
I couldn't find the answer to that on their site. It may revert to the paid version. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What happens to this software after one year? Does it become unusable or do charges incur?
Unfortunately K9 Web Protection is no longer available. Outdated information. All links related with K9 software lead to Symantec site.
I came across this somewhere, and I looked at it. They are asking just too many personal details, and I aint willing to share that much.
I haven't run across any that looked odd to me, but the images were photographed from space.
Thank you for the tip on rotating the display. :)
You're very welcome and I'm happy you like it. Thanks for input on Opera, I hadn't tested it there. Brave, Edge Chromium and Iridium worked fine, good to know Opera does too. :)
Thanks. Brilliant find, working without a hitch on opera.
I'm glad you like it, I use it often too.
Another gem of a tiny program! I've got it on my QuickLaunch menu for quick access.
If that's the case, you can rotate the display, but make sure you know how to restore it before you do so!
You might like to make a note ON PAPER of the following:
Using the arrow keys on the numeric keypad (4 is left, 8 is up, 6 is right and 2 is down),
Normal orientation: Ctrl+Alt+8 (i.e. original top is at the top)
Upside down: Ctrl+Alt+2
Top to the left: Ctrl+Alt+4
Top to the right: Ctrl+Alt+6
Thanks for such info.
