This Dedicated Gmail Client Is Fantastic 9 months 4 hours ago crombierob

You got me all excited.
HOWEVER I use XP for 90% of my computing, and I fail (getting the free program) on 2 counts -
1) We have to have W7 or newer
2) Their FAQ has this entry -
Do you offer a free version?
Kiwi for Gmail Lite is free and available in the Mac App Store. The Lite version of Kiwi for Gmail supports one Gmail account and lacks some key features, such as the Do Not Disturb switch, important-only notifications, keyboard shortcuts, and account themes.
Our Windows version offers a 30 day trial after which a purchase is needed to retain all features.

Ultradefrag is still available at sourceforge.net and version 7.1.1 has a stable release from October 2018, but future development of version 8 does appear to be commercial:

In 2018 the UltraDefrag project has been transferred to Green Gate Systems, LLC.

You'd have to provide a lot more information for anyone to know if you have missed something.

Also, the right place to query slow speed is with Ultradefrag at SourceForge which I see you (same user name) already appear to be familiar with. They're the ones who wrote the manual/tips you are reading. Personally, I would use a partition manager to make space for Linux rather than making defragmentation a dependency for what you really want to achieve. Gparted, for example, handles making space for a new partition by moving the files into one block within an existing partition.

Defragmenting a hard disk drive (you shouldn't do SSDs) is slowed by many factors. Here's some of the more obvious factors: the version of Windows; the complexity of the optimization; large disk size; slow disk speed i.e. 5400 rpm isntead of 7200rpm; higher proportion of the disk filled particularly with files larger than available free space; other running processes particularly those using the disk which is why they recommend running Ultradefrag at boot; immovable system files (easier at boot and in newer versions of Windows);  Windows paging; slow RAM; slow CPU.

view
UltraDefrag 9 months 18 hours ago spaarks

This is very slow indeed. Took 7 hours for a full drfrag, and now in Full Optimisation and after 7 hours only 68% optimised.
Defender and Super Antispyware real-time protection are turned OFF.
Trash and temp files deleted before starting.
Is there something I have missed?

How Windows 64-bit Supports 32-bit Applications 9 months 2 days ago Remah

I'm not sure that there is a problem for Windows users. 64-bit Windows 7 (or 8/8.1 or 10) doesn't have 16-bit support so I doubt that there is any significance to not having setup16.lst or even setup16.exe.

How Windows 64-bit Supports 32-bit Applications 9 months 3 days ago LarryOliva

Article has fatal problem created by Microsoft for what my experience is on all Windows7 SP1 that I have checked. If you read into WOW64 you will find the use of setup16.exe in the code. For this file to operate it requires initialization file setup16.lst which is not found in the directory containing setup16.exe. This file setup16.exe is in many of the registry keys for working in the x86 environment. On my PC where I found WOW64 and scanned into the file there is setup16.exe. Therfore WOW64 is doomed to failure. In all my encounters with Microsoft support there is no recognition of any such file even though setup16.exe needs it. In decompiling setup16.exe the blank form for setup16.lst is found. If anyone has this *.lst file it is worth a fortune.

It is common practice for freeware apps to download potentialy unwanted additions and/or change the users homepage or search engine. There are ways to avoid any of these if users pay attention during the install process or employ one of the freeware tools available that will warn of such actions. This is just one of the advisory pages we have published on this subject. MC Site Manager.

I installed the tools and editor to try them out. When I use either the tools or the editor, the software opens my web browser to PDFill's website. I uninstalled it immediately. I realize this is freeware and I wouldn't mind a nag screen, but hijacking my browser goes too far. I would not recommend this unless a user simply cannot find another free tool to do the job.

15 Useful Windows Run Commands 9 months 1 week ago Jojo Yee

Repeating Windows Key + R . (one period), or repeating Windows Key + R .. (two periods), only allows one instance of File Explorer. With both (one and two periods), the most you can open up are two instances of File Explorer.

However, repeating Windows Key + E always opens up a new instance of File Explorer, probably as many instances as you press the shortcut keys. Through View > Options in File Explorer, it can be set whether opening it to Quick Access or This PC. My choice is Quick Access.

I like shortcut keys that are easy to remember, like Windows Key + E, which means Windows E-xplorer, now known as File E-xplorer. :)

Thanks for the new shortcut, I usually Windows Key + R .. (two periods). One period is more specific.

I tend to use the Search Bar and the Run box interchangably. The thing I like about the ssearch bar is it will offer up several options if they are available.

I'm also fond of the Windows Key + X menu. :)

view
15 Useful Windows Run Commands 9 months 1 week ago MoisheP

Thanks for the shortcuts! Another: Win-R . (i.e. Run and a single period, or full-stop) gets Windows Explorer opened to the user's home folder.
BTW, some of these commands are more easily available from the Windows Search bar -- press Win key and type part of the name, e.g. "devmg" to open Device Manager, or "rege" for Regedit, instead of needing to enter the full application's name.

Controversial Advertising Program Now Being Embedded in More Software 9 months 1 week ago dark matter

Amen!

And just to address the whole FreeFileSync issue, here is a quote from their FAQ page:

➤ " Is FreeFileSync still showing an advertisement in its installer?
No, FreeFileSync is completely ad-free! Before version 10, FreeFileSync had shown a single advertisement during installation to help fund the project. Beginning with FreeFileSync 10, the project is now fully relying on donations from users to finance its ongoing expenses in software development and support."

Hi Rhiannon,
I agree with you: keeping fingers on the keyboard is much faster than moving back and forth to the mouse/touchpad.
However, if we're looking for speed and ease of use, I don't know of anything better than "Windows key"-letter. (I am using, of course, Classic Shell, not the Modern/whatever-it's-called-now interface.)
My top fifteen programs, they are only two keys away. For instance, Microsoft Word is "Windows key"-M.
As for the other hundred and some programs on this computer, they take, at the most, five keys away (they are organized in sub-menus, according to category: utilities, business apps, media, internet, etc.)
If I used Control Panel or Services on a regular basis, it would be a simple thing to add them to the two-key list.

Still, the main point of my original comment was the author expecting people to remember obscure commands like "devmgmt.msc" and "control.exe appwiz.cpl." Not my idea of intuitive, or quick and easy.

view
15 Useful Windows Run Commands 9 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

Thanks for your feedback. :)

We have readers with a wide range of experience and interest here at Gizmo's. Advanced users, many of us who know enough to get around, those who are new to computers, and people who have less time, experience or interest in computers.
I would find things that are interesting to everyone all the time if I figure out how. :) :) :)

I think the article's usefulness depends in part on how you use your computer or if you want tricks or tips so that it's faster and easier.
In the mouse/keyboard spectrum I lean towards the keyboard because it's so much faster and easier, not just for the more technical commands, but for things most of us probably do every day.
I use the Run box to open or run all kind of things, everything from the Word to Calculator to my email program to the Font folder. I use it to open Notepad, Wordpad, Services, change the Mouse speed and pointers and so on. I use it to open the User folder because Windows has the habit of periodically hiding the App Data folder.
There's a browse button using the Start menu access to find things as well.
It's much easier to for me to navigate that way than using a mouse and going through the Start menu. If it's not on the taskbar or the desktop (which I access using the Windows Key + D) then I usually use the run command.
The Windows Key + X is another way to access some Windows functions, like the command prompt.

There are some terms that need to be memorized, but most aren't that far off the names of what you want to use. For example, Control Panel is control. Calculator is calc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

FreeFileSync 9 months 2 weeks ago fred64

FreeFileSync has been my main sync program for many years. Yes a few years back you might have had to uncheck some payware app, but that has not been the case for more than a year. You should always keep an eye out for that on any software products you install anyways. (its not just the free ones that do this) .

I have found FreeFileSync reliable, fast and accurate. It has the ability to save jobs (.ffs) to a batch file which can be run on demand or scheduled by Windows. It works with USB, SD, Network or local folder(s) that windows can see (I have not tried against a cloud based folder). It provides an easy to click override of the option it selects for each file to be processed. Also, they regularly provide updates for bug fixes and enhancements. current version is 10.7.

I'm retired, and I provide a lot of folks help with their PCs (for free). That often includes setting them up with easy to use on demand ability to save their stuff to USB or network storage. Everyone I set up finds it fast and easy to do.

This article is Incorrect. Windows 8.1 has Refresh & Reset. Windows 10 has Fresh Start which keeps the users personal files and some settings and clean installs Windows 10. Windows 10 offers 2 (actually 3 but only going to cover 2 here) types of Reset (1. keep all personal files) and Reset (2. remove everything and reinstall Windows). System Restore does not restore your system to an earlier point - it merely reverses any settings changes, programs installed/uninstalled or registry changes made since the restore point used was created. Any documents, photos, or other personal files are not changed.

Stop mobile apps from tracking your location 9 months 4 weeks ago rhiannon

Apps normally have a setting that gives you the option to disable location tracking, and ask to use location data when they are installed. If you're going to leave location tracking turned on and have given permission for any apps to use your location, the settings have to be changed for each app.
Myself, I knew that tracking was occurring, but I had no idea of the extent and accuracy of the tracking or how much money is being made from personal location tracking.

'Find Album Info' Not Working In Windows Media Player? Try This 10 months 6 days ago rhiannon

That's a usual entry for the HOSTS file. What has been happening is that the entry that Windows Media Player uses to get album information disappears.

You can manually add the line to the HOSTS file using the directions above, or you can reset the HOSTS file using the directions at this Microsoft article - it has directions for Windows 7 and earlier, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. It may restore the entry, I haven't tested it yet, it's a recent find and I haven't had time.

I wiped everything out of my HOSTS file about 6 weeks ago on Windows 8.1 because the problem recurred and I wanted to see what would happen with no entries in the HOSTS file and Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Player hasn't had any trouble finding album data even on older music ever since. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm waiting to see if the issue repeats. I don't usually use Windows Media Player (I use VLC) but I check to see if it's retrieving album information pretty regularly.

When I open my hosts file, I see "This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Window" and no lines not #ed out. Is there another file I should be looking for?

Downloaded and installed 'pdfsam-3.3.7.msi'. As far as I could see, there is no feature to permit visual re-ordering of pages.

Weeks ago, when it was still possible, I downloaded Version 18 and Version 12 (the oldest available).
I got busy and finally got around to installing Version 12 today, hoping it would be old enough to fly under the radar.
No such luck; it installed as a 30-day Trial version; there was no forever free option.
No way am going to "subscribe" for any software; I will use open source or do without.
