KMPlayer 1 year 2 weeks ago ernestoch

Hallo, my office computer detected OpenCandy and deleted the executable. That was an old standalone version I had been using for years, suddenly the company switch to defender and it picked up KMplayer.exe. I thought about getting the latest version, and disappointment struck. The version I downloaded - installed - tested - unistalled right away, has nothing to do with the version I had been using. Condider kmplayer defunct. I'll keep using it at home, the good old standalone.

I've updated the article to include the error message appearing only in Firefox. As MC says, I assumed that the site cetificate wasn't renewed or there was another benign error since virustotal didn't flag it and no other browsers gave a warning of any kind. The site is safe as far as I have been able to determine. As always, use your own best judgement whether to proceed or not.
I'll add that Firefox has repeatedly flagged sites that I've been visiting for years, indicating they are so dangerous Firefox would not let me add an exception and proceed to the site. I had to use other browsers to visit the site (none of which displayed an error message and which virustotal rated as safe). If Firefox throws a security warning I automatically assume it's an error on Mozilla's end, though I visit the site using a few other browsers and virustotal to be sure.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, you can do many things using Google search and that's a good feature. DuckDuckGo has a similar function.
If you prefer more privacy using Google, you can use encrypted Google to search:

For folks that don't know, you can do conversions and calcs in the google search bar. You can also ask Alexa (or OK Google, or Siri I presume) to do conversions which is probably the fastest way to get an answer (though not good for calcs except for simple ones.)

Thanks for the reply. I'm in Adelaide and currently, there is no local app, but according to Asthma Australia there soon will be one, which for me will be a blessing.

I have also d/l the app from Plume https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plumelabs.air which seems to be okay.

I'm also a member of WU, which also has lots of useful info.

C# is a programming language, ASP.NET is a framework to produce web sites, applications and services. .NET is also a framework, all are created by Microsoft.
I'm not sure what would work the best to create the app you want. Maybe someone here would know.

Have you looked at Asthma Australia's pollen apps?

If you're in Canberra, this one is available: Canberra Pollen App

There are more apps here: The Best Allergy Apps of 2019

I track pollen in my area at https://www.wunderground.com/. They are global with many local sites. They are quite accurate in this area, and often list what is blooming in addition to type (trees, grass, weed) and how high the counts are.

Hi,
I would like to be able to make an app for myself which displays daily pollen counts. For whatever reason, in my part of the country (Australia), there is not an app which shows this type of local information which is so important for us asthma and hayfever sufferers.

So my question would be is this where I would begin to learn how to make an app, as I have no idea what C#, ASP.NET or .NET actually are?

Cheers,

Sandboxie Is Released As Freeware, Soon To Be Open Source 1 year 4 weeks ago rhiannon

Good points.
Releasing code to open source is actually a good thing. It let's anyone see what's in the code - people see if there's something wrong so it can be fixed, see if something has been added that shouldn't be there, and can make suggestions for additions.
Lots of eyes on the code is a good thing. The other thing that's good is that anyone with the skills can improve the program and add features.

There are some good programs that create a virtual machine in your computer (Virtual Box comes to mind), one of the differences between Sandboxie and a virtual machine is that Sandboxie has an option that allows you to keep some aspects of the Sandbox session. If you download a program and opt to keep it, it will still be there when you close Sandboxie.
Virtual machine programs don't, as far as I know, retain any changes from any session - if you download a program I believe it disappears. I haven't used one for a while so I'm not 100% sure about that, I'm going on past experience.

at rhiannon,
Something To Be AWARE Of -
Some years ago when Tzuk still owned it, (before Sophos ended up with it) there were (a few) Malicious Code Writers that figured out how to have their M S/W look for the indications that they were in a sandbox.. The germs would then lay low/remain doormat until the user (thinking the s/w was clean) would then install it into their system. Thankfully not every germ writer knew how to do this and Tzuk was able to change something (in his code?) that made it harder or impossible for the germs to tell when they were in a virtual environment.

Sophos announced that they were going to release the [Source Code] to the project when they announced there were no more paid versions the other day.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but won't this make it easier for Malicious Cogwaddlers to defeat the program?
There used to be a couple of standalone programs that created temporary virtual environments, StorageCraft also had one as did Acronis True Image ("Try It and Decide" or something) but were abandoned because of the
difficulty in not letting the Malware know they were in a sandbox.
Except Sandboxie.
Seems like that could change if the code is released.

I have felt safest when using FF with NoScript. I have been using that for years.
I still can, because FF has stopped updating it's versions for those of us using XP
NoScript is no longer available in the later versions of FF.
For my XP browsing, it is lucky that FF insists that I have to use that earlier FF version (which NoScript still works in)

I use W10 occasionally, so I would be interested in knowing how I can have java script disabling like NoScript used to do.
Anyone have any suggestions ?

That is always a personal choice.
The four permissions that the add-on asks for are listed on the page for the add-on:

This add-on can:

  • Access your data for all websites
  • Download files and read and modify the browser’s download history
  • Access browser tabs
  • Store unlimited amount of client-side data

I don't see "communicate with cooperating websites" listed there, or when the add-on is installed (I just installed it):

Here's a link to what permissions are in Firefox:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/permission-request-messages-firefox...

The "communicate with cooperating websites" isn't listed at the permissions page.

view
Malwarebytes Launches Browser Guard for Chrome and Firefox 1 year 1 month ago rhiannon

That is, as always, up to you.
You can go the Firefox add-ons page and view the privacy policy of any add-on.
As far as I know, most Chrome exensions have no listed privacy policy, it's probably available on the developers site.

Here's the link to Malwarebytes privacy policy for Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/malwarebytes/privacy/

Here's a link to what the permissions mean in Firefox:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/permission-request-messages-firefox...

If there's anything in the policy you aren't comfortable with I would avoid installing the add-on. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Surveys are many times put out by advertisers and if I cannot allow them on whichever survey I am doing I lose points and/or cut down the number of surveys I am shown. In other words, I cannot have a blanket shutdown of these ads/adware etc I will not be able to do most surveys. Ghostery allows the ad sites on my surveys without allowing all the ads everywhere else. Think I'll keep my Ghostery as it works with AdGuard perfectly. Thanx rhiannon.

I guess you didn't know, there has always been a free version available. When Tzuk owned it from 2004 to Dec 2016, he had the Pro version for sale and if after 30 days you didn't activate it you lost a few functionalities ie ... only the default sandbox, (no additional sandboxes) no Forced Programs and a nag screen for 10 seconds and you had to wait for the ten seconds before starting a program in a sandbox.
Even when Invincea bought it and then got bought up by Sophos in Feb of 2017 and started selling a paid Home version and a paid Commercial version you could download the home version and after 30 days you lost the few functionalities unless you already had the free version installed, then it went straight to the limited version.
I've been using the free version all along until today when I read your article (Thanks for that by the way) and D/L 5.34 x64.
If you use the Wayback Machine you can still download versions back to 3.76.
Some guy turned me on to this back in 04/05, I believe his name was Ian Richards. I was really grateful. This was the best thing I'd seen since sliced bread hit the table.
