Using Windows 7? You MUST Ensure That Updates Are Enabled. 2 years 8 months ago OhZone

I'm sure no one cares, but I decided to clone my Win7 OS to another drive. I checked that it boots up under the second emergency drive. I removed it, and NOW I WILL UPDATE WINDOWS. Ha. So if I have to, I can go back to the other drive without the potentially bad updates. :P I also backed up my data to a different external drive before that. So lets see what happens. Updating momentarily. :P

Using Windows Defender? An Easy Way To Get A Second Opinion. 4 years 10 months ago crosseyedlemon

If Microsoft consciously decided to try to beat the major players at their own game it would be an embarrassment of epic proportions. Windows defender is something I would only use as a temporary fallback if my anti-virus and spyware software stopped working.

Rob, thanks for this heads-up. I'm on Win 8.1. In my version of Defender, the info on the Engine version is seen when you click the little down arrow next to the word "Help" in the upper right corner of the Windows Defender window. The down arrow is visible no matter which tab ("Home", "Update", "History", "Settings") you have open.

Su -- with the W7 O/S Defender is not the same thing as Windows Defender which is the default AV scanner for W10. I have forgotten whether W8 uses the W10 Windows Defender. It is another problem with MS using the same of similar names for programs such as this or things such as Explorer and Internet Explorer. If still using Essentials, it is likely a good idea to do any updates but having Defender in W7 turned off is just fine as is.

The same is true for Microsoft Security Essentials in Win 7. The current engine number is 1.1.13704.0. It should certainly have updated by now; to check the engine version: open MSE, click on small arrow head (triangle) immediately to the right of Help in the upper-right corner —> About.

So, doesn't Windows Defender update itself with every "Full" scan? And why would you have Defender and NOT schedule a Full scan every night?

Hi. I used this and liked it! BUT.. after a short time, a matter of days, it reverted to the "trial ended". You can use it, but you can't export video. So, it wasn't worth $69 for the paid version. I gotta uninstall it. Too bad.

view
VideoPad Video Editor 2 years 10 months ago ctwist

You probably installed the trial version instead of the free version.
Each time you start the free version you are prompted with "Certify that VideoPad is being used for non-commercial, home use only". If this is not shown, you are using the wrong version.

view
VideoPad Video Editor 2 years 10 months ago ctwist

The correct download link for the free version is https://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/download-now.html

view
VideoPad Video Editor 2 years 10 months ago ctwist

I have been using VideoPad 5.32 for 6 days. It works very well, but it is unstable.

However, VideoPad automatically saves the project settings regularly. When you restart after a crash, Videopad offers to restore the autosaved project. You can usually recover the project to immediately before the crash.

view
VideoPad Video Editor 2 years 9 months ago ichabod

On 11/4/17, I installed VideoPad 5.11 and thought that it was the free version. I got the "Certify" prompt each time I opened it. I used it then to learn its features, but don't recall if I saved any video files at that time. Today I tried to save a video file and it said that that was a paid feature.

view
VideoPad Video Editor 2 years 9 months ago ichabod

Thank you for that info. On that page, the "Free Version for Home Use" box has a "VideoPad Free for Windows" link to the "vpsetup.exe" file. However, above that on the page is a bold graphic with a "download now" button that gives the "vppsetup.exe" file; that's what I had previously and is the trial/demo version. Today, after uninstalling the "vppsetup.exe" version, I installed the "vpsetup.exe" version--but with a huge catch: The program opened with a dialog saying that since I'd already used an expired trial version, I'd have to either buy a license or make this the "lite" version; when I chose the latter, it behaved like the expired trial version and would not save any new changes to a video file.

Mesh or another Gizmo editor needs to update their download links for desktop installations, because they currently link to the paid version. And, unless my experience was abnormal, the product review should caution people about using the trial version if they are likely to switch to the free version on the same device.

view
VideoPad Video Editor 2 years 8 months ago Mesh

Thanks for the clarity, if you use trial version at first its very difficult to move to free version. you'd probaly have to unistall and remove it from the registry but it doesn't always work. in the meantime I'll update the download links and the disclaimers

VideoPad Video Editor 2 months 1 day ago pipso_facto

I used the free version of VideoPad for home use and it never prevented me from exporting video saying it was a paid feature. I did not experience any stability issues.

This would be my go to video editor if it weren't for problems exporting the finished video, sometimes. When I initiated the export process, sometimes it would finish very quickly - appear in the completed videos list but it would produce a very small useless output file, less than 1kbyte. It looks like a bug. When I hit this problem I couldn't find any workaround to make it export properly: tried other output formats and various small tweaks to no avail.

So having put in several hours effort editing a video and then finding it won't export is a major problem even if it works the rest of the time.

It's a shame as this is a very accomplished piece of software. It works fairly intuitively, very familiar to someone who's used other video editing software.

I do still like its stabilize - subjectively on my videos it was marginally better than the stabilize in Shotcut which is my go to video editor (and VirtualDub which I also tested). VideoPad lets you Stabilize from the project area and it produces a stabilized video file directly from there without using the problematic export function.

I suspect that VideoPad's titles are better than Shotcut's but I had already given up with VideoPad before I had a chance to try them.

Apart from not exporting video files properly, here are my other criticisms of VideoPad:

* In most video editors, there is a timecode representing the cursor position on the timeline in the form: "hh:mm:ss:frame_num". The last number goes 0-29 or 0-24 depending on the frame rate. In VideoPad the last 3 digits are milliseconds rather than frame number. Takes a bit of getting used to.

* When adding a video to the project area, it can take a while "indexing video". Then there's a grey/blue progress line and high CPU usage, presumably while it creates a temporary preview file.

* It also uses green progress lines on the edited video in the final timeline probably to show how far it's got in creating a preview of the edited timeline. Again that can take a while to go all green. CPU usage is high while it's doing this.

* I installed the free version and confirmed on each startup that I was using it for personal use. After a couple of weeks it told me the trial was coming to an end soon. Then it told me some features would be disabled unless I purchased it. Finally I'm back to confirming on each startup that I'm using it for personal use. I don't know which, if any, features have been disabled. I was never informed I was using a trial version when I first installed it or subsequently. I don't mind if the free version is limited but it would be nice to know what the limitations are. I can still use multiple video tracks in this "trial expired" free version.

For those not from the UK, and also those too young to remember, Pathe newsreels were a part of every visit to the cinema in those days when TV ownership was low; indeed for many they were the only way to see events and people they had heard about on the radio. They were edited as mini documentaries as they were intended to be seen at least 2 days after the event (they were produced and distributed around the country using physical media) and anything up to a week after. As such the newsreels didn't cover things in the way we now expect rolling news in an electronic age.

Can you track 3 Facebook accounts on the same page?

view
View All Your Social Networking From One Place 4 years 5 months ago crosseyedlemon

An aggregator that allows only 3 Twitter feeds is basically useless as most people with Twitter accounts (including myself) follow hundreds of other accounts. I don't imagine it would satisfy those who use LinkedIn for networking either. Maybe Hootsuite could be convinced to offer 10 free premium licenses to readers at Gizmo.

Well they want you to go on a plan!

I used it for a while, what happens if you have a poor RSS feed, so your internet connect is not good say like me you are in an area where people switch the cable TV on in the evening or you use wifi a lot on the road, or your ISP has trouble with a social media site, after a few attempts (I think 3)  it cuts off the feed with no warning. So often I did not know I was cut off. The support they had was good but the problem just kept happening and in the end I gave up on this program.

view
View All Your Social Networking From One Place 4 years 4 months ago crosseyedlemon

I don't think this aggregator would use the normal RSS format because if that were the case then you could use a regular free newsreader such as Feed Demon to connect to social accounts. Thanks for the heads-up about Twitterdeck....will check that out.

Not to my knowledge. It uses online tools like Google Docs and Zoho viewer to view files embedded in web pages. It's been around a few years that I know of and has been written up at various reputable tech sites. I would think if there was an issue it would surface in several places, in particular the reviews on the browser add-on/extension download page.

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago Yankiwi

Hi, Rhiannon,

Thanks for the tip. It might be handy in an emergency if I'm using a VPN (e.g., in Opera), but if the extension is using Google Docs to open documents, I'm afraid I'll have to pass. Google has demonstrated an insatiable appetite for gathering every conceivable scrap of information from those who use any of its services and I value my privacy way too much. It's hard to avoid using absolutely everything Google, given the tentacles it has spread into the online world, but I'm sure as heck not going to surrender any info to Google knowingly if I have any alternative, and in the case of opening these documents, I do.

That issue aside, many thanks for all your hard work and the many finds you share on this site. I really appreciate everything that you and the other Gizmo contributors do to make this site so excellent.

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago rhiannon

I understand what you mean about privacy and the lack thereof with Google, Facebook and others.

The add-on doesn't use Google Docs itself, or Zoho services itself, or other third party services, rather, it leverages the API's for those services to make files viewable in a browser window (Zoho viewer API, Google viewer API etc.).
API's (application program interface) are software to software interfaces, not a UI's (user interfaces).

From what I understand, files are opened independently of the Google Docs UI (User Interface) itself - that is, nothing is opened using Google Docs or any of Zoho's services.
You need a Google account to use Google Docs and an account with Zoho to view files in their services.
The file viewer opens embedded files whether you have an account or not in any browser I've tried it on.

I don't know enough about coding or API's to say definitively one way another whether those API's can track what document or file embedded in a web page is being viewed or the content of that document or file.
Maybe someone else here knows?

I think it's absurd that this many document formats exist and although browser addons can be useful, they affect your browser effectiveness so you have to restrict yourself to just the most essential ones.

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago rhiannon

LOL define essential. :)
I do so much of my work in a browser that my list of "essential" Firefox add-ons is 17.
Less in other browsers because they don't have equivalent extensions with the same functionality.
There are some add-ons I don't use in Firefox because they interfere with performance, and have consistently done so over a period of years.

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago crosseyedlemon

I relied on Firefox for over a decade because of the excellent versatility that it's add-ons provided. Had to abandon that browser about 2 years ago because many started to hang on my system (Windows 7). If your running 17 without issues I assume you have a more recent OS. I currently limit myself to 4 on Chrome.

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago rhiannon

I can see why you would need to switch browsers. Compatibility with older OS versions often isn't a priority.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on the desktop and Windows 10 on the laptop.

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago Yankiwi

Hi, Rhiannon,

You said that "There are some add-ons I don't use in Firefox because they interfere with performance, and have consistently done so over a period of years." For those of us who find the function of Firefox to be degenerating and problematic at times, it would be great if you could provide the names of the FF add-ons on your "blacklist," as such a list might help us to troubleshoot our own FF issues. Perhaps an idea for another post? ;-)

Cheers

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago rhiannon

Two I've had consistent issues with over the years that are still in the Firefox add-on site are Ghostery and WOT. Most people don't have any issues with either of them so I'm not sure how useful a list would be because much depends on what add-ons you have installed and browser configuration. I normally make changes to the Firefox "about:config" settings too. They are both good add-ons and both work fine in in Chrome based browsers for me.

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago rhiannon

The other thing I do that keeps Firefox zippy is a clean install when there's a version upgrade. :)

view
View Almost Any Document In Your Browser 2 years 4 months ago Yankiwi

Wow! I certainly understand the value of a fresh installation, but given Firefox's breakneck pace of updates, you must be reinstalling FF about once every week or so! Do you likewise reinstall all your add-ons? If so, I probably wouldn't get all of my add-ons reinstalled before the next FF update came along and I'd have to start all over again. :)

Would you please clarify that comment?

The page where the program is downloaded from says its free for Windows and Mac. I downloaded the program and tested it extensively on two different computers with two versions of Windows before writing it up. There were no upgrade or sales prompts, it wasn't a program that has basic features for free with more features with a paid upgrade. If you had a different experience downloading, installing and using the program it would be helpful to know about it.

FontLab has paid programs, but the app that I downloaded and tested is a small app they offer for free. I would add that the program is available as at some of download sites like cnet, where it's listed as free, and is reviewed favorably on several sites. There's a YouTube tutorial on how to use it with Cricut, if you're a crafter and use die cut machines.
