The end of an era. I remember when you first started with your freeware newsletter Ian and the TechSupportAlert site was little more than a basic repository for your newsletter archives. Although you probably won't remember, you and I used to communicate occasionally via email back in those days. You were, and always have been, a freeware guru with an extraordinary understanding of new and innovative freeware... and a thorough gentleman to boot. I sincerely wish you all the best in retirement and thank you for your years of helping us mere mortals. Cheers... Jim in Oz |

I had to login for the first time in years just to wish you the best. This website has helped me find the best freeware ever and helped steer me away from "acquiring" software. I used to show people this website all the time when I was working retail and helping people with their computer and electronic purchases. Sometimes they would come in looking software to do specific things and I would show them this site and tell them to see if they could find what they were looking for. Words really can't explain how valuable this site has been to me over the years. Enjoy your retirement and thanks again.for all you've done. |

Hopefully our current status and aims for the future will encourage a few more volunteers to come forward since we have quite a number of reviews in need of updating. As ever I'll be here to help whoever and with whatever I can. Thanks Gizmo for all your support and not least for enduring my off beat sense of humor. Gizmo is Retiring but Gizmo’s Freeware Goes On | 3 weeks 8 hours ago | George | For me it started with "Gizmo's 46 Best" list many years ago, a list of free and useful PC software products. Thank you so much, Gizmo, for your contribution. What you have started will live on and we will do our best to manage it in your spirit. I wish you all the best for your retirement. Enjoy other great aspects of life now with your wife and maybe say Hello now and then. Thank you again for everything, George | view |

I have a paid version of Machete that I have used for several years but just recently came across a limitation: it doesn't handle large files well. Each .avi file from my 2001 Sony MiniDV camcorder is about 25 GB in size. Machete will allow edits (e.g., trims along key frames) but it cannot save the modified file. It goes into a 'non-responding' state. Freeware LosslessCut handled the same files with no problem. Support from Machete acknowledged the problem and recommended that I split the files before trimming. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a user-friendly lossless editor! |

I enjoyed listening to several of the forest sounds since they loop/repeat. It's pleasant background sound. Some were distinct enough that the repeating sounds bothered me a bit. If your ear picks up repetitive patterns easily the site may not appeal to you. As Sturgeon General mentions, you may enjoy my Noise, and there are many good collections of nature sounds on YouTube. |

You're welcome. I prefer my Noise to other sites like noisli.com. You have to create an accout there and the sounds on the the free plan are limited. I agree, my Noise is hands down the best noise generating site I've come across, paid or free.

These recordings vary in length as you describe, but 'loop'. They are meant to be a soothing background (white) noise for relaxation rather than a full length movie. You may be more interested in an earlier posting also by Rhiannon from back in June... |

I used Everything for a long time. But, a few years ago I found Wizfile https://antibody-software.com/wizfile/ It indexes the entire disk in a coupla seconds. It won's search across disks, which I think Everything can do. But, it's so fast that that doesn't really matter. The same company also has Wiztree, which replaces windirstat. Same thing, just a few secs, and it's done. Both are fully functional shareware, so free to try out. Not affiliated, just a user/customer. |

How to Take a Snapshot of Web Page and Store It Online | 1 month 1 week ago | rhiannon |
I'm not familiar with .mht. I would save a page using your usual method and save the same page at the site and compare the two. The page is also stored online, so is accessible from a device with an internet connection and can look up other websites and any previous iterations that may have been saved.

How to Take a Snapshot of Web Page and Store It Online | 1 month 1 week ago | rhiannon |
Archiving a page is different from a screenshot. It stores the whole page in its original format. You can copy things from the page, links work, etc. It's an active web page, not a static screenshot. It stores the page online at a unique URL. Any previously archived pages are there for comparison. It's very much like the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, the links and content are intact (minus scripts and some interactive elements). |

It's working fine for me now in a few different browsers on two different internet connections on mobile and laptop. I've had mixed results over the years with the sites that check if a website is down so I tend to check many of them if I think a site is down. Some will say a site is working, some not. That's the result I've gotten now. This says it's up: https://isitdownorjust.me/archive-is/. Another says it's been down for maintenance for 100 days. There are some issues with Cloudflare with this and other sites. If you’re using a DNS service that could be an issue. I'd try a different browser. I'm running into more and more site availability issues with the newer versions of Chrome based browsers. Lol I ran into one just now, a site I use often and used last night is now flagged as unsafe in a chrome based browser but is fine in Firefox. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

Windows Store Apps don't have a standard installer or uninstaller like traditional apps (e.g. .exe or .msi). They are called Progressive Web Apps (PWA) and use the .appx extension. They are stored in the C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder (if C: is where you've installed Windows).

The thing I find most baffling about this is Microsoft's not following what I would have thought to be an installation standard. No where does installing this (and it isn't the first that bit me) does it show up in the uninstall part of control panel. It just goes somewhere and the standard way of uninstalling programs doesn't work. I'm a fan of Revo Uninstaller Pro (what doesn't have a "Pro" version anymore?) and it didn't show it and could not find it either. Programs have generally uninstalled using Microsoft's uninstaller (or so variation of it) for years and suddenly no more? |
