Automatically Colorize Black and White Photos Online For Free 7 months 1 week ago Bramy

Had some fun with this. Thanks.

I uploaded a screenshot from an old black & white western movie. The image was a landscape with cattle and cowboys etc. The result was pretty good but as far as getting what I'd guess the correct colours would be but overall a bit washed out.

Next I uploaded an image of another landscape, one which had been in colour but I had used greyscale to make it black & white. The results weren't that great. The original colour image featured a brown car in the foreground, pine trees to the left, a signpost with red paint on it to the right and in the background snow covered hills. The result after colorizing was a grey car, dark coloured sign (can't really detect what colour it is, pine trees okay but green colour bleeding into some of the adjacent area making the snow green there. Not good.

I recall having previously using another colorizing site (or perhaps it was this one) and uploading the image of "The Rifelman" from the old TV series as he walks down the street in the intro. The colours were really good.

Thanks.

That's one of the reasons I looked for sites other than the well known services like Google Drive and One Drive, Dropbox, etc. :)

Anyone can use these four with no account. All you need is a file you want to send, a 'send to' email address, and a 'send from' email address.

Also, If you have an Outlook/Hotmail account and try to attach a too-large file, you are directed to upload the file to One Drive. The recipient is sent a link very much like an attachment, but it directs them to a page where the file can be downloaded.

It's great to have options like these for transferring big files and not have to deal with the absurdly low email attachment limits imposed by email service providers like Google, MSN and Yahoo. When Vic published this article he tested using Windows 7. As the app is 9 years old it's debatable how compatible it might be with Windows 10. That said I tested with Windows 10 x64 using the same Kingston drive and the results were pretty consistent. MC Site Manager.

Have you tried using Word itself to open the PDF? Versions from Word 2013 onward can open PDF files directly; change the file type filter from Word files in the File -> Open box to PDF files, and voila... it opens as an editable version. You can then make changes (if you want), and save as a Word doc. In my experience, the quality of the converted output is quite good.

(Yes, I know Word is a commercial program, but the ask is for an editable version of the PDF file which will almost always be in Word format).

Did you ever find out if it will convert a .pdf to another format?

EDIT -
I just checked and the documentation on GitHub states as the Editor listed, the only Document output format is to a .pdf file from the listed input formats. The only place .pdf is listed as an input type is in Images.

The only place you can input a .pgf file is in Images. Your first statement said you were trying to convert a .pdf to a Word document, which it doesn't do but it will work the other way. (to work with M$ based file formats Word/Office has to be installed)
It sounds like your trying to edit .pdf files. Have you tried a .pdf Editor?

I was just pointing out where the 32bit installer is located. Have you checked the troubleshooting section at https://file-converter.org/ ?
Do you have the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 installed? If not see https://github.com/Tichau/FileConverter/wiki/Troubleshooting

You might try a web search for : Windows Installer could not be accessed. Windows Installer is not correctly installed to see how to run the program as administrator.

The support personnel cited in the error message you received probably refers to the folks who wrote/maintain the file converter program.

This is a great find. And actually, it does work in XYplorer. In XYplorer, if you right-click a file, you get the 32-bit context menu by default. But one of the options in the 32-bit context menu is to open the 64-bit context menu. When you do that, voila!, File Converter is there (assuming you installed the 64-bit version of File Converter).

view
Convert Files With A Right Click In Windows Explorer 7 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

It's pretty configurable for what it does. I added this to the article, but File Converter works in some other file managers as well as Explorer. Directory Opus and xplorer² had the context menu entry, some of the others didn't. Dopus worked fine, a few misses with leaving images out when converting .docx to pdf in xplorer².

Convert Files With A Right Click In Windows Explorer 7 months 2 weeks ago rhiannon

No, not all are equal.

The files I converted were document, audio and video files. I didn't see a loss of quality when listened to, viewed, or read, but I'm not an audiophile and I don't have a 4K monitor so YMMV. The presets can be changed in the main program interface if you want higher or lower quality. I used the default settings.

I did run into an issue converting animated .gifs to .mp4 where a message that the file couldn't be read appeared.
It seemed to be confined to a few gifs as it worked on all the others I tried. I assumed there was an issue with the original format since it only occurred on a few.

It's a lightweight program and doesn't take a lot of resources, and it's output files are much more limited than a full featured file converter.
I like it because I'm forever forgetting to open an image in a new browser window or drag it to another browser and I end up downloading it as a .webp file and then it has to be converted. If for no other reason than it takes a couple of clicks to convert a .webp file to another image format this one is a keeper. It took all the .webp files I had and converted them at the same time. :)

I used "Double Commander" for several years. I liked it because it is 2 pane but also has tabs. It has a simple file renamer that I used a lot. Unfortunately, it got to a point where it crashed fairly often and I started to be concerned about possible damage to my PC. ...So I started looking for a new file manager. Your Editor's Choice "Free Commander" is the one I selected. It has every feature that "Double Commander" has and then some. In fact, it is very similar in appearance. I have to customize every file manager extensively to get them to work the way I want. "Free Commander" is no exception. My only criticism is some of the customization options are not very intuitive. I figured out how to add my own icons on the toolbars but it wasn't straight forward; however, there is some pretty good online instructions that helped. I have been very satisfied so far and no crashes yet!

LastPass' first attempt at addressing this? "Clear the LastPass cache." Totally ignoring the severity of the security breach that what has happened suggests.

I am starting the long, tedious process of creating all new passwords and NOT storing them in LastPass.

Although I am clued up on IT pretty well, I've always struggled somewhat with networking and firewall detailed comprehension, or perhaps it's more about taking the necessary time to understand.

I have to run a business and at the end of the day I have to choose all of my various suppliers, free or commercial, that includes the software that runs on my computers. I've tried to go 100% with Linux several times, but driver and other issues stopped me from progressing. I also work in an MS Office workflow and LibreOffice is not good enough yet for me unfortunately. Also WINE does not work with my version of Office.

Anyway, what I'm getting to is that I review several review sites and the security software that I choose is via a calculation I do based on the freely available test result of 4 review sites: AV-Comparatives, AV-Test, MRG Effitas and SE Labs. Windows Defender has improved tremendously over the past year or two, but my commercial choice is one that does slightly better across all these test sites. I delegate my knowledge to them, teams of very experienced professionals who are hopefully protecting my machines, including at the network / firewall level, since I don't have all the time and experience that they do.

I'm not knocking your good point MC, just making my point that yes, WD and WDF is great, but for especially for a roving business laptop, I choose a commercial solution which gets consistently high marks on independent test sites and has what I understand to be a smarter firewall than WDF. I'm sure those tests that you referred to were spot-on, but products move on I'd be interested to see a similar test done today. For home or small office based computing WD, WDF + uBlock Origin and an occasional scan with the free Emsisoft and / or Malwarebytes scanners are enough for 99% of users in my view.

By the way, I'd forgotten in my previous post that another favourite firewall od mine was the PC Tools one and which I used at one point in conjunction with Threatfire, a great combo! Sadly swallowed up by bigger fish and no longer available, although I'm sure their technology lives on within new products.

It`s a pity the .pdf test report is no longer available from AV Comparatives. The commercial program you enthuse about so much failed in 5 separate areas and actually reduces your security compared to Windows firewall from the moment it is activated. The problem is folks believe the hype on the vendor`s website and end up buying the product. The same applies to so called registry cleaners that provide no useful function other than to generate profits for the vendors and cause multiple installations of Windows to need reinstalling. :)

ZoneAlarm does have program control.

https://www.zonealarm.com/learning-center/application-control/

This is actually a good example of why it is necessary to have a proper understanding of security apps before deciding to dump the perfectly good set of default applications provided with Windows. If you don't even know what a particular third party program offers how can you possibly configure it correctly and decide it is better than the Windows default?

Overall from the set of circumstances you describe you would be far better off using Linux as I do for all my business and personal needs. MC - Site Manager

view
Best Free Firewall Protection 8 months 3 days ago cavehomme

Thanks MC. I do agree with you / the article that WDF is enough in most cases.

I have a laptop that I use a lot for travel and used (commercial reference removed as per site rules) I use a VPN when travelling, but it does not kick in immediately after connecting, and very often you have to register with a hotel or other wifi first to be able to get the connection established, then you can enable VPN. It's during that period oftime that I feel really exposed.

I've used Comodo FW before but had too many issues with it. Zonealarm doesn't do program control and probably misses other functions too. Privatefirewall was ideal for me back in Win 7 days. Hence my frustration at not finding another solution. I've tried the various outbound firewall control softwares on this site but they are too manual for me.

Back in 2014 AV Comparatives was commissioned to conduct an independent test of firewalls and the Windows firewall outperformed everything. In fact most of the third party apps actually reduced the level of security once installed. This is one reason why the number of third party firewalls has declined. They are no longer necessary. Those that do exist do so mostly as a platform to sell other products rather than perform any useful function. MC – Site Manager. The .pdf report of this test is no longer available on their site but this is a copy of the conclusion from it.

Conclusion
Of twelve Internet security suites tested, only five provided full protection in public networks.
Another two allowed Remote Desktop connections to be made using IP addresses; whilst this does not
affect users with Home editions of Windows, it could represent a significant security risk to business
users with Professional, Business or Enterprise versions of Windows. One further suite can provide full
protection if it is manually configured (and the PC restarted after connecting to the network), but
this can only be done by advanced users with an understanding of TCP/IP networking. For the average
user, the suite’s firewall effectively allows all forms of access in public networks. The remaining four
allow both file sharing and Remote Desktop access in public networks, even in cases where the LAN
has been registered as public in the suite’s own settings.
Six out of the seven manufacturers whose suites fail to provide complete protection make a
standalone antivirus program without firewall, which can usually be purchased more cheaply than the
corresponding full Internet security suite. However, most manufacturers claim in their advertising
that the more expensive suite will protect the user’s computer better than the simple antivirus
program. This test indicates that half of the security vendors are actually charging more money for a
product that may provide significantly less security in some situations, and that users would do better
to buy the simple antivirus program and rely on Windows Firewall to prevent unauthorised intrusion.
We note that a number of major vendors are nowadays not including their own firewalls in their
security suites, but relying on Windows Firewall instead, as this provides suitable protection and is
easy to configure.
In the case of the four standalone firewalls, all allowed both file sharing and Remote Desktop access
in public networks, even in cases where the network has been set to Public/Untrusted in the program
itself. We would suggest that enthusiasts who use such programs should consider whether the
advanced features provided in these programs make up for the lack of basic protection in public
networks.

Best Free Firewall Protection 8 months 4 days ago cavehomme

This section is really disappointing. We need to know about firewalls. Comodo is not the answer for many of us, not trustworthy any more, slows things down. Zonealarm is US based and probably hooked up to NSA. Is there nothing free and decent out there which does not require a degree in Computer Security to set up???

Get Classic Windows 7 Games in Windows 8 and 10 for Free 8 months 5 days ago eikelein

@fmbob:
The Win7 games in the WinAero package definitely are NOT touch enabled.
But they should work as long as you use your finger just like a mouse on a classic computer.
Actually I have no direct experience with that configuration because neither my customers nor myself would spend the money for a "Win10 tablet"; the only one I know of would be a MS Surface machine...

I was wondering the same thing, if it was a Windows tablet would the old games be usable with a touchscreen? Maybe someone here has experience with it and will chime in.

I don't have the tablet yet - I was considering buying one with Windows 10 as I would specifically like to use the Solitaire / Freecell / Spider Solitaire etc from Windows 7 which I currently use on PC's with Windows 7 and Windows 10.
But it occurred to me that, W7 Games probably wouldn't work in TouchScreen environment

µTorrent Help: Using µTorrent's Torrent Search 8 months 5 days ago ssybesma

If you want to create a uTorrent search URL from scratch for a torrent website not listed here or anywhere else you can find, you can do it like this.
Open Internet Explorer 11, and go to the torrent website whose search URL you wish to add to uTorrent.
Search for something, anything.
Hit F12 for Developer Tools and go to the Network tab.
There you will see a couple lines of information at the top left under Name/Path.
The first line is the search format URL you need for uTorrent and the second line is the search result URL you used to generate that information.
The search format URL is shown with the part after the slash being on top of the part before the slash. Just combine the two into a proper URL and add them to uTorrent and you will see the next time you search for something using that torrent website, it will work.

This Dedicated Gmail Client Is Fantastic 8 months 6 days ago crombierob

You got me all excited.
HOWEVER I use XP for 90% of my computing, and I fail (getting the free program) on 2 counts -
1) We have to have W7 or newer
2) Their FAQ has this entry -
Do you offer a free version?
Kiwi for Gmail Lite is free and available in the Mac App Store. The Lite version of Kiwi for Gmail supports one Gmail account and lacks some key features, such as the Do Not Disturb switch, important-only notifications, keyboard shortcuts, and account themes.
Our Windows version offers a 30 day trial after which a purchase is needed to retain all features.

UltraDefrag 8 months 6 days ago Remah

Ultradefrag is still available at sourceforge.net and version 7.1.1 has a stable release from October 2018, but future development of version 8 does appear to be commercial:

In 2018 the UltraDefrag project has been transferred to Green Gate Systems, LLC.

You'd have to provide a lot more information for anyone to know if you have missed something.

Also, the right place to query slow speed is with Ultradefrag at SourceForge which I see you (same user name) already appear to be familiar with. They're the ones who wrote the manual/tips you are reading. Personally, I would use a partition manager to make space for Linux rather than making defragmentation a dependency for what you really want to achieve. Gparted, for example, handles making space for a new partition by moving the files into one block within an existing partition.

Defragmenting a hard disk drive (you shouldn't do SSDs) is slowed by many factors. Here's some of the more obvious factors: the version of Windows; the complexity of the optimization; large disk size; slow disk speed i.e. 5400 rpm isntead of 7200rpm; higher proportion of the disk filled particularly with files larger than available free space; other running processes particularly those using the disk which is why they recommend running Ultradefrag at boot; immovable system files (easier at boot and in newer versions of Windows);  Windows paging; slow RAM; slow CPU.

UltraDefrag 8 months 1 week ago spaarks

This is very slow indeed. Took 7 hours for a full drfrag, and now in Full Optimisation and after 7 hours only 68% optimised.
Defender and Super Antispyware real-time protection are turned OFF.
Trash and temp files deleted before starting.
Is there something I have missed?

How Windows 64-bit Supports 32-bit Applications 8 months 1 week ago Remah

I'm not sure that there is a problem for Windows users. 64-bit Windows 7 (or 8/8.1 or 10) doesn't have 16-bit support so I doubt that there is any significance to not having setup16.lst or even setup16.exe.
