And don't forget that, unless you've deleted it, photographs often include GPS data along with time and date stamps. For the average person that probably doesn't mean much, but for those with massive data harvesting and analysis capabilities (Google, etc.) it means being able to know your exact location at a specific time and date. And beyond that, to extrapolate your travels if enough information is available.
No, I'm not really that paranoid. But the data is there along with the capability to analyze it, should someone want to.
Gizmo’s Freeware always tries to safeguard the interests of members and visitors including download advisory notices for some software but there is a limit to adopting a nanny type of presentation.
Pretty much everything you do in life has security and privacy risks especially using Windows and yet here we are as predominantly a Windows resource site. The same applies to Windows security software where 95% of all users never bother to read the vendor’s documentation and thus end up with an incorrectly configured system churning out results they can't understand and most likely ignore.

Thanks. Proves my point that we are way to permissive with the sharing of our photos. Metadata can track the address the photo was taken !
Techsupportalert was based on providing people with software info that is screened to be safe
Can we not be recommending any more website uploading services that request photos or documents, without making clear the associated risks
So if you recommend a photo upload site, please recommend that personal photos be first stripped of their metadata
This is basic information in 2019
Yes. The majority of computer readers these are blasé about security risks. They don’t read security articles. Attention spans have reduced, and all that matters is that you have a good selfie
To inform people, you just need one sentence at the end of reviews:
For software, we need to state that the program has been screened for malware
For photo upload sites, we need to remind people that the Privacy policy may allow developers to onsell your photos, so strip your photo metadata first (and provide the link how to do this)
As I’ve said to Rhiannon, it’s better to find utilities to perform tasks, rather than uploading your data to anonymous websites. Instead we normalise this behaviour
Tech support should always keep people informed, otherwise it becomes part of the problem
thanks nice collection of wallpapers....
there are latest Halloween wallpaper 2019 if anyone wants to download

If you want your chosen layout to stick you need to uncheck the "Let the system position window" option, and if you want your customisation to apply to all console windows (Command and PowerShell, standard and elevated) you need to make the changes in the defaults rather than properties section.
A quick way to change and set the layout is to first drag/resize the window to suit then go into the properties>layout tab and note down the new values there then go into defaults>layout and set these same values.
Started using Handbrake a while ago, now discovering that sometimes it doesn't rip/encode the whole disk (got to within 10 minutes of the end of a movie only to have it END!). Also, built a new computer and upgraded (finally) to Win10: Handbrake has install problems: it appears to install (appears on the installed programs list) but there's no icon, and the executable is nowhere to be found. If I instead download the .zip install folder, I can start it but it crashes immediately. Not a hopeful start, and with prematurely ended rips, not sure why I was installing it in the first place. Moving on.
I've been using Starter for many years and thought that seeing as AutoRuns is regarded as better that I'd give it a go.
The silly program does not even have an option of adding a new startup program. So much for my attempt at 'modernising'.
It's back to Starter for me. ;-)
I have found the Winaero site (and this one!) very useful and informative over the years. As well as regularly updating the Tweaker app Sergey, the site's owner also posts articles showing how to do the individual tweaks including providing ready-made registry files for those unwilling to do the edits themselves, and other interesting items on Windows updates and changes.
A few more tweaks for all to love...

When I go to the Winaero site to download Winearo site to download the Tweaker, I see various other downloads such as a driver utility and a converter and others but not the Tweaker.
Thanks Rhiannon! Just the program i was waiting for.The boot screen and logon on Windows 10 bug me to no end. The spinner and "Please wait" in particular. I've changed boot and login screens since Windows 98.
You're welcome. :)
Boot and logon screens are not my cup of tea either, I've disabled them in every version of Windows they appear on. I'm the only one who accesses my computers, no need for separate logons.
Yeah, I do this for a lot of older folks who miss their games (shame on M$ for removing the games the oldies like). However, I get called back after upgrades, as the games are removed!
I am testing this one and passing it to a recipe group that will beat it to death :)
Vivaldi users can get this from the Chrome web store!!
Thanks Rhiannon for another winner
That's interesting to know and not surprising, given Microsoft's activities since Windows 10 was released.
I'm with you, leave my programs alone. And do not replace the latest NVidia graphics driver with a generic Microsoft one.
Have you tried right clicking on the +Add to Firefox button, choosing Save Link As, download the xpi, open Add-Ons from the settings menu (three horizontal lines top right), click the Gear icon, and from the dropdown choosing Install Add-on From File?
If that doesn't work, you might try an earlier version of the add-on, available from the add-on page.
I'm asking because I installed it on two Firefox browsers (not synced and at the moment not the same version) on my desktop and laptop. It also installed in Waterfox on desktop and laptop with no issues. Using version 70, 64 bit.

I use the "Video Download Helper" extension in Firefox.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZT8yI60k_4
It sits right at the top of the screen and all you do is click it & choose your format/quality. In Windows, if you install their "companion app", you can choose your download location.
I use a program called DesktopOK. You don't install it buy just run it, save the icon locations, and if they get moved around you can just hit restore. It was mentioned on this site in 2013 and 2014.
at rhiannon,
Thanks for this. I've tried everything I could find since 2005 but nothing actually (stopped) them from moving. Most everything put them back pretty good. (but still a pain in the buTTocks)
I noticed you talking about new icons go to the next available grid space ... but it will lock in a non-grid type format or personal preference-like pattern, right?
Sorry if I missed that info.
That didn't work for me with Chrome - came back with the message could not convert file while Free Video Downloader did it no problem at all while offering a choice of download formats, etc.
It depends on your icon settings - if they are set to align icons to grid, auto arrange icons, or both it will place icons in different places.
If only auto arrange is checked it will add a new icon to the next space in a group of icons.
If only align to grid is checked, it added a new icon to the approximate center of the screen.
With both align to grid and auto arrange unchecked it placed the new icon in the approximate center of the screen.
Whatever configuration your desktop is when you installed it is how it will stay. If you add a new icon and want it somewhere else, double click the icon in the system tray to disable it, move the icon where you want it, and double click the program icon in the system tray again to lock the desktop.
Thanks for the tip.
I previously heard of adding "ss" in front of "YouTube" but that now takes you to a page that asks you to pay for a higher resolution download.
For whom it may interest: here's how you can download a video or only the music without installing anything:
When you're watching a YouTube video and you want to download it (or just the music), in the address bar of your browser type 'pp' after the 'e' of YouTube and press enter.
Eg. you're watching the video at the web addres https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hh6qJuA5jg, then update the address to https://www.youtubePP.com/watch?v=6Hh6qJuA5jg and choose your download.
Easy as pie.
[Edit]: It looks like it doesn't work anymore. (Sorry I didn't try it anymore before posting) Too bad. :-(
Most of the time that kind of services don't last long. On the other hand, no doubt others will take over.
I've used Iconoid for years. The advantage it has, is that it doesn't have to be disabled to put an icon where you want it. However, you do have to tell it to save icon positions when you have the layout just the way you want it. The most needed options are available within a right-click context menu. There are some other options too, You can find it here: https://www.sillysot.com/. I have been using it since Windows 95, I think.
Please note: "Iconoid works on Windows 8 & 10 but hasn't been extensively tested on either."
There's a real need for these types of programs. I've used a few over the last 20 years or so. The one I currently use is Desktop Restore. It's a shell program that puts Save Desktop and Restore Desktop in the right-click menu. After you add a new icon you simply right click and Save Desktop then when something rearranges your icons you right-click and select Restore Desktop.
It’s delightful that you are getting ideas from this post as well as from our conversation made at this place. https://www.dawateislami.net/magazine/en

The best free graphical fm for Windows 10 is Aerize Explorer which is in MS Store. I will say that Linux fm's are better than the ones available for Win 10.
Thanks for that. I didn't specify where the settings are because sometimes in Firefox they are not in the lower right part of the window. No idea why but I didn't want to specify something that in my experience isn't always in the same place in all browsers. :)
at rhiannon,
Thanks for the Chrome info.
Firefox is pulling off of the https://ftp.mozilla.org/ website.
Anything made by Mozilla, from the first version to the latest version, all flavors (Win, Linux, Mac, x32 and x64) all the Languages, offline and online (stub) installers. Most of the (older) versions have a 2015 date as a " last date modified" but I think that's when they were added to the FTP list and version 42 on up have the Public Release Date as the last modified date.
Hope that made sense.
Trace has this url on it's domain block list as of this message posting date.

Both links go to their respective add-on/extensions at Mozilla Add-ons and the Chrome web store.
Hope that's all you need. I just cancelled the install process so the extension never completed the installation process and does not appear in the installed extension list.

Thank you. I'm not sure what Trace is picking up on, the only thing I can see is the URL for ocr.space is listed on both sites.
It's probably a false positive, the add-on has been around since 2017 and I'm not seeing any issues on the add-on pages for Chrome or Firefox. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can do something similar to download Facebook videos, though I haven't tested it in all browsers.
I'm finding that things that work in other browsers (including other Chromium based browsers) don't work in Chrome.
