I hadn't thought of it being like Ghostery. You can disable protection for individual sites in Malwarebytes - there's the option to turn off any or all of these options on individual sites: disable ads/trackers, malware, scams, and PUP's (potentially unwanted programs).

NoScript is currently at the Firefox add-on page:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/
If I can't get an add-on to install, I right click on it, save as .xpi, download, and drag and drop it on the extension page or use the Install Add-on from File option.

I usually use this instead:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/disable-javascript/

I've used this but it lacks site specific options:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/javascript-toggler
(toolbar button that toggles Java on and off)

I haven't used this but it looks promising, I'll have to give it a try:

I have felt safest when using FF with NoScript. I have been using that for years.
I still can, because FF has stopped updating it's versions for those of us using XP
NoScript is no longer available in the later versions of FF.
For my XP browsing, it is lucky that FF insists that I have to use that earlier FF version (which NoScript still works in)

I use W10 occasionally, so I would be interested in knowing how I can have java script disabling like NoScript used to do.
Anyone have any suggestions ?

That is always a personal choice.
The four permissions that the add-on asks for are listed on the page for the add-on:

This add-on can:

  • Access your data for all websites
  • Download files and read and modify the browser’s download history
  • Access browser tabs
  • Store unlimited amount of client-side data

I don't see "communicate with cooperating websites" listed there, or when the add-on is installed (I just installed it):

Here's a link to what permissions are in Firefox:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/permission-request-messages-firefox...

The "communicate with cooperating websites" isn't listed at the permissions page.

view
Malwarebytes Launches Browser Guard for Chrome and Firefox 1 month 4 weeks ago rhiannon

That is, as always, up to you.
You can go the Firefox add-ons page and view the privacy policy of any add-on.
As far as I know, most Chrome exensions have no listed privacy policy, it's probably available on the developers site.

Here's the link to Malwarebytes privacy policy for Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/malwarebytes/privacy/

Here's a link to what the permissions mean in Firefox:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/permission-request-messages-firefox...

If there's anything in the policy you aren't comfortable with I would avoid installing the add-on. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't like this idea from Malwarebytes:

Sounds like MB is trying to add Ghostery features. Love Ghostery because I can allow specific advertising sires on just one or two single survey sites. Surveys are many times put out by advertisers and if I cannot allow them on whichever survey I am doing I lose points and/or cut down the number of surveys I am shown. In other words, I cannot have a blanket shutdown of these ads/adware etc I will not be able to do most surveys. Ghostery allows the ad sites on my surveys without allowing all the ads everywhere else. Think I'll keep my Ghostery as it works with AdGuard perfectly. Thanx rhiannon.

[END QUOTE]

I guess you didn't know, there has always been a free version available. When Tzuk owned it from 2004 to Dec 2016, he had the Pro version for sale and if after 30 days you didn't activate it you lost a few functionalities ie ... only the default sandbox, (no additional sandboxes) no Forced Programs and a nag screen for 10 seconds and you had to wait for the ten seconds before starting a program in a sandbox.
Even when Invincea bought it and then got bought up by Sophos in Feb of 2017 and started selling a paid Home version and a paid Commercial version you could download the home version and after 30 days you lost the few functionalities unless you already had the free version installed, then it went straight to the limited version.
I've been using the free version all along until today when I read your article (Thanks for that by the way) and D/L 5.34 x64.
If you use the Wayback Machine you can still download versions back to 3.76.
Some guy turned me on to this back in 04/05, I believe his name was Ian Richards. I was really grateful. This was the best thing I'd seen since sliced bread hit the table.
With Buster Sandbox Analyzer you can watch the scumware you catch in your Sandboxie sandbox.

No confusion here. You do a great job, rhiannon.
Thanks for the Windows sandbox info. This is the first I've heard of it being possible in the Home edition. Will definitely try it out.
My one issue was enabling Virtualization in the UEFI. Finally found the setting on one of my computers but still can't find it on the other.
Came across this tip: You can see if Virtualization is enabled by checking the Task Manager Performance tab (lower right side).

Correct, it's not available by default in the Home version but it can be enabled. I've added a link with directions, and a search for Enable Windows Sandbox Windows 10 Home will bring up other sites with similar instructions.

Thanks for all the comments, I don't mind anything off being pointed out or being corrected when I'm off base.

I edited the article to make it clearer that Windows Sandbox is an alternative and included a link to enable it for Windows 10 Home Edition.

I'm sorry for any confusion, my aim is to always provide as many options and as much information as I can to everyone. I occasionally fail or don't do it well and I appreciate the input when I don't.

Hmmmm, I'm not seeing anywhere in the article where I stated Sandboxie is for Windows Pro users only. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The article lists exactly what operating systems Sandboxie runs on, here they are again in case there are questions:

Sandboxie works on

  • Windows XP SP3 (Up until Sandboxie 5.22 )
  • Windows 7 (32/64)
  • Windows 8.1 (32/64)
  • Windows 10 (32/64)(Edge browser & Metro(tile) Apps not supported)
  • Windows 10 Insider Preview (Fast Ring) supported in Beta builds that are released in the User Forum
  • There is some support for older 64-bit versions of Windows: see the download page

Yes, Sandboxie is a great program.
I've used it for at least 10 years (even just tested a downloaded screensaver sandboxed since I wasn't familiar with the website).
At times, a major Windows update will cause an issue with Sandboxie and in the past it has been addressed rather promptly by the programmers. The talk in the forums of late is concern that the more hands-off policy of the new ownership will change that.
Please correct me it I'm wrong, but I believe the Windows 10 Sandbox is only available in the Pro or Enterprise versions. Would love to try it.

When saving web pages, I use a firefox extension called HackTheWeb.
When you click it's menu item to toggle it on, you will see red rectangles around the frames as you move the mouse.
If you don't want that frame you just click the mouse.
After sufficient pruning, you click the menu entry to toggle it off.

I use XP 95% of the time (runs faster than W7 and W10 on my old PCs)
Firefox's last edition for XP is 52.9 and the extension works in that.
Those using the latest version of FF, may have to search to find something with similar functionality

Could you please provide a specific reference or citation where you agree to share your data with the developers/company behind Copyfish and they state they will share your data within within the company or with third parties if you use Copyfish? It would be helpful and would allow me to amend the article if necessary.

The information that Copyfish captures stays in your local browser. It never leaves your device, and is not sent to any cloud service.

I read the permissions. I did further checking on both the company and the add-on before writing it up. I checked into their privacy policy. Their API and all source code is open source, anyone can look at it to see if your information is being sent outside the browser and any other add-on functions. The code is on Github. For additional information the company FAQ is useful.

Here's a helpful site about browser permissions and what they do, it's written for Firefox but the permissions would be the same across browsers:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/permission-request-messages-firefox...

Copyfish puts a fish shaped button in the address bar of your browser. To use Copyfish, click on the fish icon, select the area with the text you want extracted and Copyfish opens a separate window, extracts and displays the extracted text. The overlay lets you verify the text. You can choose to copy the text to the clipboard, redo the OCR, recapture, or translate text.
