As an alternative to youtube there's torch music ( http://music.torchbrowser.com/ ). It's a relatively new service that uses the youtube library, but it works better in that it doesn't have covers or spam stuff, and the adds don't break up the video flow. Totally free too.
I love You-tube it's full of varied videos lot's of different content but it seems google are trying to upset 90% of it's you tube users by forcing them to have a google plus pages , I can no longer comment on you tube videos until I accept the T&C's of having a google plus page which I don't even want , it's seems not enough people were using google plus so they decided to MAKE people use it ( not really the way to go )
IMO it's unfair to list as a con what "spam" comments that nor YouTube or content providers have no reasonable control over. Spam was first used to refer to unsolicited email. By posting comments for public consumption or post original comments to the content one is in essence soliciting responses. Googles/youtubes attempt to encourage/force the use of real names on YouTube had the potential to move abuse from inside the web into the world where people actually live. A crank angered by a John Doe on the web is likely to harass every John Doe they can find a phone number for. Actually comment on YouTube are some of the most useful on the web, particularly since YouTube got rid of the character limit and allowed inserting of all URL'. Yea you have to ignore the stupid crap, but that's a small price to pay for free. tmy gmail account associated with YouTube isn't my primary email account. The only time a make point to visit my gmail account is when I'm expect something from the google help staff or from the google/YouTube forums. Generally I scroll through the mail and based on the subject mark expect email to be moved to a folder for reading, the remainder is block deleted. I rarely engage in YouTube comment peeing contests
One doesn't have to use Google+ to use you tube, why not setup G+? When using YouTube I given the choice to use my long time anonymous YouTube user name of my G+ name. In the event the ability to comment is so important to anyone they should decide to stop viewing YouTube content after telling the google/YouTube and the content providers of that decision, and carry through with that decision. Clearly YouTube's hope was to clean up comments by having comments associated with what are thought to be real names civility would ensue. Did take sever exchanges with someone at YouTube to discover how I could still use my long time YouTube user name at YouTube, not my G= associated name. Sometimes getting what you think is right takes effort, and patience. Yes policy can change tomorrow. I'm ready to be allowed to watch the videos without commenting, or walk away from YouTube, I doubt few others are ready to do so as well. Anyway not in enough numbers to influance policy.
Hi usadoug, thank you for the comment! You make a good point. I am the same way! rarely will I spend time actually reading comments. YouTube also allows the uploader to disable/remove comments. However I think sometimes comments can border on abusive and/or irrelevant to the video completely. And if something can be done to filter comments more, it should be done. Wouldn't you say?

These are mostly romance novels. I'm interested in freely downloadable epub mysteries by John Dickson Carr, Ross MacDonald, Ngaio Marsh, Leslie Charteris, P.D. James, and about detectives, such as John Cardinal, Harry Dresden, Salvo Montalbano, Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, Elvis Cole, Alex McKnight, Logan McRae, Armand Gamache, John Rebus, and Lord Peter Wimsey. I've already got all of Agatha Christie's works.
You're in luck - Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series is FREE here: https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20080401.
For current books, still within copyright and by authors who are still alive and need to eat, please consider buying an ebook once in a while (and then use Calibre to remove the darn DRM), or just check out what your library has to offer.
Huh. I'm not sure what genre or category (on the left side of the screen) you were looking at, but the categories I checked before posting this had no romance books. I looked at these genres and their categories: Computers and Technology, Travel, Arts and Photography, Reference, and Biographies & Memoirs.
The landing page has a lot of romance novels though, that's for sure.
I think their classification system is jumbled, but the categories and sub-categories are more reflective of the topic.
You could check the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category for some of those authors, but I'm not sure that any of them would ever show up in the free category. Lee Child (Jack Reacher), Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch) and Robert Crais (Elvis Cole) are all popular authors. I've don't think I've ever seen popular and best-selling authors in the free category, and I've seen only a few authors at that level show up in discounted books. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Amazon's eBooks are downloaded in their propietary format, though they can converted to ePub on the web or using a program like Calibre.
Doesn't work for Australia - keeps transferring to Australian Amazon site - even though US site says ships online to international. Australian site does not have any free.
I suggest you use a browser like EPIC which allows you to specify what country you are coming from. It's free, based on Chrome code and is a useful addition for when you want to do this kind of thing.
The coffee map (No.28) surprised me a bit, and the Chinese names for countries (No.39) are entertaining. Can't make out what they call Slovenia though, I'll have to look that up.
No.1, Google Street View, is nonsense :-) Our town is well within the marked area and we definitely don't have it.

Great list--thanks for all the links. I would add this series of speculative fiction which is mostly classic science fiction by early greats in the genre. Can be listened to again & again. You can find it over at the internet archive. It's called "Mind Webs" a radio series out of WHA radio in Madison WI.

Excellent article :) I think there's a small mistake in the following para. Please correct me if I am wrong. The original is as follows:
"One important point that is made in that article is that it is not possible to install a 32-bit device driver on a 64-bit operating system. This is because device drivers run in parallel to the operating system. The emulation is done at the operating system level so it is available to the higher layer, the application, but it is not available to the device driver which runs on the same level."
The corrected one, which I think should be is as follows:
"One important point that is made in that article is that it is not possible to install a 32-bit device driver on a 64-bit operating system. This is because device drivers run in parallel to the operating system. The emulation is done at the application program level so it is available to the higher layer, the application, but it is not available to the device driver which runs on the same level."
"The emulation is done at the operating system level" not at "the application program level". This is because the emulator has to intercept operating system calls. If the emulator were an application program then it would not normally have sufficient privilege to interfere with the operating system or to supervise other application programs.
This article has been updated with more examples of how to find out if software is 32-bit or 64-bit. Screenshots have been added for Task Manager and Process Explorer.

I have been given a PC and I want to determine if its 64bit and therefore what OS to purchase. I prefer 64-bit but dont know if this machine is capable.
How do I determine that the hardware is 64 bit capable when there is no operating system installed?
Yes, it is hard to find an article that shows you how to find out what processor is installed when you don't have an operating system loaded to start the computer.
If you know the name of the processor (CPU) in your computer then you can find out if it is 64-bit by searching online. Most new CPUs are at least 64-bit.
Here is an example using an 8 year-old "Intel Core 2 Duo T7500". I've provided links to the relevant Wikipedia articles: Intel is the manufacturer and the article has links to each generation and brand of CPUs. Core 2 is the brand of processor. The article says "Core 2 is a brand encompassing a range of Intel's consumer 64-bit x86-64 single-, dual-, and quad-core microprocessors based on the Core microarchitecture." Duo means the CPU has two or dual cores. T7500 is the model or processor number. Intel has its own ARK search tool which provides this T7500 specification sheet where is says the "Instruction set" is 64-bit.
Earlier i replaced the hard drive on my Windows 7, 64-bit HP. The tech department at work installed a 32-bit version of windows 7 professional. When the upgrade to windows 10 occurs, and since it is apparently occurring through windows update, will it automatically install the 32-bit version or will I have an option to install the 64-bit version? I wasn't able to find this answer in my brief search. Thank you in advance!
I can't be definitive but it will almost certainly work the same way it does for earlier Windows releases as with 32-bit Windows upgrade to 64-bit Windows 8. The upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit cannot be done using the Upgrade Advisor or any other automatic method. It has to be done manually with a clean install.
To upgrade to Windows 8 it was more expensive to go from 32-bit to 64-bit because the cheapest upgrade path was using the default upgrade from 32-bit to 32-bit. If Windows upgrades from 7 and 8 to 10 are free then there may be no difference.

Well spotted. Now corrected. That mistake had been there for years. :)
