That's funny. Microsoft already got you as a beta tester for 10, now they have you as a distributor. I only think it's funny because I don't use it.
I torrent Linux distros, but I have to opt in, of course. It's the least I can do to help spread Linux. The problem is that I have cable internet, and the upload is a tenth the speed of the download.

At first I thought, this almost seems illegal, M/S using my OS to spread their crapola around on my dime. Then I remembered, it's their OS. At least they graciously allow me to turn it off so I don't have to break the terms of my legally binding agreement by reverse engineering.

How nice of MS to spread this little xxx around for FREE. I figured there had to be some kind of catch. I'm glad I decided to wait for the "bugs" to get worked out. I'm thinking perhaps I'd better wait 10 or 11 months before downloading the "free" Windows 10. Or perhaps it's time to start buying retail versions, but those might be bugged as well.

I recall MS stepping up to the plate and issuing a fix to fix the Sony fix, that was supposed to fix the Sony fix, that was supposed to fix the Sony rootkit. Now it sound like the MS heroism may have just been a big confidence scam as I am sure MS new full well that this little update bot scam would eventually crash and burn. Makes me wonder what other little blunders they've got in store for us.

Excellent advice and a very welcome heads up! Thankfully I was able to see the folly in pre-athorized, automatic payments long ago and avoid them. But the reminder is much appreciated. Of course, these types of payments can be convenient, but at what cost and who really benefits the most from this convenience! I am quite sure that my paypal account does not include any automatic payments but I'm going to check anyway. Thanks again. Great stuff!

Unauthorized renewals is a big issue and fortunately there's a simple solution. Use virtual credit card numbers to sign up for services and to pay for most purchases on the web. I have two credit cards with Citibank. I can create a one-time-use virtual credit card number either by logging in to my Citi account online or, more conveniently by using the app (download from Citi) on my Windows computer. Once called, the app asks for my user name and password. I can then choose which card to charge the payment to and I am also presented with two additional options. I can limit the maximum amount that can be charged to that virtual number, useful if you're unsure of the integrity of the vendor, and you can set an expiration date. Once options, if any, are set the app generates a number complete with month and year and CVV number. The charge appears on your regular credit card statement and to the seller it is no different than any other transaction. Until that is they try to renew. Since the number was good for one use only it cannot be used for renewal and of course it's useless if stolen from the vendors database. You will then receive an email from that vendor telling you they had a problem with the renewal you may not have authorized at which point you can renew with another virtual number or ignore them completely. I use virtual credit card numbers with all online purchases and, with the exception of EZpass (no choice there) I grant no one access to my accounts. Not all banks offer this service but I consider it invaluable and sleep better at night because of it.

This was an eye opener.

I had eleven active accounts and one cancelled account ranging from July 2001o to Feb 2016 that to the best of my recollection I never authorized to automatically take payments and none of the active accounts showed that there were any. The cancelled one was from a blog which I didn't authorize for a yearly renewal and I'm guessing the cancel was initiated by the blog.

I never do reoccurring payment accounts. Even Magazine subscriptions I pay as they come due although I forfeit the enticement for doing the automatic renewal payment.

When I got done canceling each account, it was marked inactive and advised that I would have to contact each merchant If I wanted to reactivate the account.

Bottom line, I would never knowingly authorize Pay Pal for this type transaction.

Next question. How do I completely remove the twelve accounts from my PayPal account?

view
Your PayPal Account Could Be Costing You Money. Check It Now. 2 years 7 months ago eikelein

That is one of the reasons why I give NOBODY permission to automatically charge any of my accounts - well truth be told, we got the 0% car loan only with the provision that they can charge my checking account automatically. And I will watch for the correct termination of these payments, you bet.

EVERYBODY else has to send me an invoice and I initiate the transfer from said checking account to the recipient. Now that I do for convenience's sake online - but then, my computer is squeaky clean as far as any kind of malware goes.

Thank you for this! I just had an issue with Godaddy in Nov where they sent me a notice that some free thing I don't use would expire and I would be billed. I spoke to them (they don't allow emails) and they carefully said there was no money due for that month or the next. I asked them to cancel the product as I had not managed to online (Godaddy are very tricksy). They said they had. I got debited anyway. I got the money back on Paypal and they said the product was cancelled. But because of this article I looked and saw they hadn't cancelled it at all and although the payment was under $100 I had apparently approved them to take up to $500 per month. THANK YOU. Now to find an alternative site to register my domain.

Never allow automatic payments from any of my accounts, even my electric. This caused me a problem about 15 years ago, before I had a computer, and had to go into the bank in order to get it straightened out. Never again. This just reminds me of my past folly. Thanx.

i have just checked my PayPal account - wasn't going to as I knew I'd never made any arrangements with them for ongoing payments - and found SIX pre-approved payments that I never created or authorised and have cancelled them. I've always trusted PayPal and now don't know just whether I do or not. Will keep a very close eye on any transaction through them in future. Thanks for the warning!

Wow. Great giveaway, BUT, it does add a keylogger and Norton 360 stopped it dead in its tracks. 360 Total Security also stopped it, so I guess this one is a NO GO. I already have CyberLink apps on my W7 PRO quad-core PC, so I know they are good products. But, this one seems to want to do more than I will allow it to do.

Sorry.

Has anyone tried extracting the keylogger from the install package or getting rid of it after installation? Curious as to what function it performs. Any passwords it supplies when using the "Facial Recognition Log-in on Websites" feature should be able to be supplied in a list manually. Guess I'll try it in a sandbox or in Returnil.

Sorry, I wouldn't know how to do either of your suggestions, I am curios for an answer though. I would like to know what you find out when using a sandbox.

I did however install it w/0 allowing the keyloggers but the program will not function w/o them installed.

It also wants to take "control" of your webcam which I did allow because of the nature of the program.

I installed Zemana Anti-keylogger Free and tried to install again, and I didn't get alerts during installation or anytime during Face-Login to Windows. I never got the Face-Login feature for websites to work though. So am completely clueless what you are talking about. I'd like you guys to post the screenshots for the keylogger or virus detections for Qihoo 360 and Zemana Anti-keylogger. I didn't notice any keylogging information during the install.
I was informed however during the installation that I would have to install Windows Media Player.
I didn't want to install Windows Media Player or windows Media Feature Pack aka Windows6.3-KB2835517-x64.msu (85.0 MB download) but what's a boy to do when logitech can't provide a working driver for his webcam. Worked on Windows 7 and now doesn't on Windows 8.1 despite downloading their latest driver.
It will fire up the webcam OK but fails on recording a video countdown remains on a loop. I visited Logitech's help forum and at at least one other user had the same problem. That user went backwards and forwards downloading the latest driver then the last but one driver and then extra codecs (never a good sign from advice person - sort of like, have you plugged in your webcam? a question of tech desperation). Nothing worked. The brats need to rebuild their driver again.

So I am pleased by this free offer brought to us by George.J

Thank you,

@ Gibbs.Slap,
Sorry about the delay. I installed to a sandbox and then remembered I had excluded the sandbox in Avira (while trying to validate a comment that a certain germ was able to escape sandboxes) and when trying to scan the sandbox manually, noticed the Avira context menu scan item was missing. After jumping through hoops trying to make it re-appear, I installed the newest (offline) version and now, since they've changed something, myself and others now have Avira telling us that Windows F/W is not activated (it nor the Win. Sec. Center has ever been) along with some other weird stuff. The context menu scan item is back so after I get Zamana I'll try again. So i positively understand, you got the (posted below) results how?
(you at first say "their download location" then you say "their install location" my apologies if I'm missing it, which I must be. ha.

view
YouCam 5 for Free: CyberLink in association with Gizmo's Freeware 4 years 5 months ago George.J Are you sure you downloaded the product from the promotional link that I've given in the article. After you input your name and e-mail id, you will get the download link in your mail id. I tried installing Zemana AntiLogger Free, it gave me no alerts during install. Are you using the Free version or Pro version? Moreover the downloaded file appears as YouCam_5.0.4628a.0_HW_STD_DE_Standard_YUC141222-05.exe and not as Setup.exe as shown in your screenshots. About your screenshots 4. It's the error message you got after blocking the requests 3. wingdi.dll means Windows Graphics Device Interface. YouCam is supposed to interact with it because it's supposed to interact with your webcam and show the output on the screen. Here's info about it 2. YouCamservice.exe is the Cyberlink service and it's a signed (verified) digital application. It's a webcam logger, because it's supposed to interact with it 1. Zemana is not just a keylogger app but a screen-logger, webcam-logger and clipboard-logger. If any app is trying to use any of these logging services it will alert the user. Since Youcam is supposed to work with your webcam, it displays that alert. Most of all during these kind of alerts, as you can see in your screenshots you can see this message, "Do not click Allow unless this is a legitimate application". And yes as you can see just below that, its a verified application from Cyberlink, so you are perfectly safe to execute the installer. These kind of problems arise when you set heuristic levels to high. view
YouCam 5 for Free: CyberLink in association with Gizmo's Freeware 4 years 5 months ago Gibbs.Slap

@ George.J and mchldpy,

Yes, I used the link supplied and the license # provided. I am using Zemana Version 1.93 - paid. Yes, I know that Zemana is a multi-use logger, the webcam logger didn't really worry me. I just don't understand why the program would need to install a keylogger (#3).Upon checking your supplied link I noticed this: (Expiration date: Monday, April 13, 2009). I don't understand why "any" program would need to install a keylogger at all, thus the use of Zemana.

As far as #1 why does this program want to inject code that that could take full access of my system? I just find these findings discouraging.

Don't get me wrong George I have downloaded tons of programs from here over the past umpteen years without having a problem. This is probably why I am so concerned about seeing these things popping up.

mxhldpy, I have to believe it was Install to:)

Yes this does apply to the version that is still available to download from Apple. If you do require it to support older applications select Custom install and ONLY select QuickTime Essentials. I have too many, rather expensive softwares that rely on Quicktime components to simply uninstall it completely from my systems. I'm hoping the fact that their last build does not include browser plugins will be help keep me safe "enough".

Another example of why I detest Apple and, as Microsoft seems determined to adopt their imperious, disrespectful, arrogant attitudes, I am coming to dislike them, too.

While that would be helpful, you should be intelligent and computer savvy enough to know how to use a search engine to find the information for yourself. It's not that difficult since it's being reported just about everywhere. Of course the first place to look would be the Apple Web Site itself. Next would be Krebs on Security. After that I would look at the various security and malware sites like Trend Micro, Sophos, Malwarebytes, etc. Sometimes you have to do your own followups to news stories. Don't expect to be spoon fed everything. If you honestly can't find the information after spending a reasonable amount of time with a search engine then it's acceptable to ask for links, but not before.

view
You Need To Uninstall Quicktime For Windows 3 years 5 months ago crosseyedlemon

It's only acceptable to ask for links after spending time with search engines? Does that just apply to articles or application downloads as well? If I were the cynical type I might think you just invested a bundle in Google shares.

view
You Need To Uninstall Quicktime For Windows 3 years 5 months ago Rev_Don

I never mentioned using Google for your searches. And yes, it is considered lazy to ask for links ANYWHERE prior to doing your own searches on something like this that is so well covered and is easily found. In less time than it took for you to even make the request (let alone wait for them to reply) you could have found the information with a search engine of you choice. And yes that can include downloads.

Of course that doesn't apply if they mention following a specific link and fail to include it.

I never considered the zero gravity effect on hair but it's a valid observation....we wouldn't want all our space heroes looking like Don King.

@rhiannon - Great find, as usual. Thank you. :) Btw, I'm sure his hair clippers have a vacuum-device attached.

@crosseyedlemon - A cure for male-pattern baldness was developed during the Apollo Eleventeen Mission. It's called "Chia" but, unfortunately, it only works in space. And, since you brought it up: After James T. , as corny, over wrought and laughably macho as he was, there is NO way Jean-Luc should have been permitted anywhere NEAR the bridge of the Enterprise, except, perhaps, to serve a nice quiche.... which, we all know, real men don't eat. He's much better suited to lasciviously sneaking and scurrying in the shadows of clandestine, Earth-bound concerns.

Terrible.
At this rate I wonder where Yahoo will be 5 years from now...

Yep, this is really terrible. I have a Yahoo account, and I don't use it that much. Now if anyone has any idea how to download all of my emails, then please share. I would like to then delete my Yahoo account. Will have to check too, whether I am using the email for any other service. One is Flickr, which is thankfully out of Yahoo now.

I don't know where they will be. I suspect Verizon didn't buy Yahoo for the email service so it may not be a priority for them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know a few people who like and use Yahoo and probably will continue to do so. My aim is to provide information so people can make informed decisions, whatever they decide to do. :)

This is a reliable source and a pretty recent article for getting your email from Yahoo, but it uses POP3 not IMAP:

SmugMug just bought Flickr. I'm not sure how that will impact users or what changes will be made, other than to current Terms and Conditions.

You can use Thunderbird to sync with Yahoo and then copy the emails you want to save and paste them into a local folder.
As far as using Yahoo, I have only used it for junk mail like if you need to enter an email address to get into a site. My actual
email is at another more secure service.

The settings to use to get Yahoo email on most email clients (Windows and Mac) are here.
I haven't tested them as I no longer have access to a Yahoo email account.

I usually use disposable or temporary email addresses or a gmail address for sites that might use my address to send me email I don't want to receive.

I haven't used any email client till now. Let's see if I get around to it.

I used to use Yahoo as a main account years ago. Not anymore though.

AMAZING! Just after transferring my bank notification emails from Gmail due to Google snooping concerns. Yes, I was locked out of Yahoo! until the terms were read and I agreed. Freakout! In other words, "all your info is mine"! Google freaked me out after browsing my Google history.
Immediately after reading Yahoo's terms I started emptying the emails. Sent them to an Outlook address. Saved to .pdf or as webpages. Now to move bank emails to Tbird!
And thanks Rhiannon for the pop imap link. It probably will help configure Tbird.
