Gizmo....Thanks for scaring the crap out of me. I've have been following Tech Alert for 30 some years (not a typo) just don't want people to figure out how old I am. From the bottom of my heart I THANK YOU for all the excellent advice you've given over the years. I always told my clients "if they didn't do anything else sign-up to Gizmo's Tech Alert" so many did and I was always told how useful they found your website. The thing is that 98% of my clients were single parents with God's Special kids or otherwise known physically or mentally challenged. I myself have been disabled for years so I really counted on donated hardware and software so when I had the parts I would build and give them a system totally free. I don't think I could have done it without the freeware or articles on your website. So truly I'm glad your site will still be around but those of us that's been around for a while need to slow down too. Thanks for all you've done to help me over the years...miss you is an under statement. God Bless and Keep You. Michael

ClipX 15 hours 35 min ago DonM

I love ClipX and have used it for years. I would give this app "Six Stars". The only problem is the update version 1903 to Windows 10 has caused it to stop working. Worked PERFECTLY until then. It will install, but cannot be configured and will NOT save any clips. I have installed about 20 other clipboard apps that hasn't come close to ClipX. Windows has it's own multi-clip clipboard in their new update, so that might be the problem. Is there any way ClipX can be fixed to run on Windows 10 version 1903? If so, I need HELP!

Doesn't even compare to most of the other clipboard apps. Had it completely disappear from my system until after 4 reboots it finally appeared. Tried to uninstall it by several methods. I was finally successful by logging in as system admin. I'm done with this program.

This worked, and your help is greatly appreciated. But you know what else? Having to do this is insanely stupid, especially because Microsoft wants you to use the default (high) level of security. Every malware program I use allows for program exceptions. But of course, Microsoft has no clue when it comes to user ease-of-use.

PC search mobile doesn't show up as an option. I downloaded the latest versions for both devices. Totally frustrated and ready to give up. Any suggestions? Thx.

'Find Album Info' Not Working In Windows Media Player? Try This 2 days 11 hours ago rhiannon

Sorry I wasn't clearer.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ folder.
Click on the HOSTS file (may or may not be capitalized).

When you're asked what program you want to open the file with, choose Notepad.

Once the HOSTS file has been opened in Notepad and you've made any changes, the file has to be saved.
Go to the File menu at the top of the window and select Save As...
Notepad will ask to save it as hosts and as a .txt file - click Save
(Notepad automatically saves all files as .txt files)

Notepad will want to save the file to the original location:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\

If you try to save the file to the original location (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\), you'll get a message saying the file can't be saved to that location, and probably asking if you want to save it to Documents instead.
(I'm not running Windows 7 so the specifics may be a bit different but they will be in approximately the same place with similar wording)
Since the file can't be saved in the original location, save the file as hosts.txt in a location where you can find it again like Desktop, Documents, Downloads, etc.

If you saved it to the Desktop, go to the to Desktop, right click on the file and select Copy.

If you've saved it to another location, use Windows Explorer to open the folder where the saved file is located.
Highlight the file. From the File menu at the top, select File then Copy. You can also right click the file and choose Copy.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ folder using Windows Explorer.
From the File menu at the top, select Paste. You can also right click inside the window where the files are listed and choose Paste.
You may need to provide permission to save the file to that folder.
Once the file is pasted, it should appear as hosts.txt in the window.

Right click on host.txt file. Select Rename. Delete the file extension, the part that says .txt.
Hit Enter.
You'll probably get a message saying that changing the file extension may make it unusable, and asking if you want to change it. Click Yes.
If you get another message asking if you want to allow the program to make changes to the file, select Yes.

The file name should now say hosts with no extension such as .txt listed.
Exit Windows Explorer by going to the File menu and select Close, or close the folder using the X in the upper right corner of the window. That's it.

Tried the above instructions for adding the 2.18.213.82 redir.metaservices.microsoft.com to the hosts file, without difficulty following the instructions until i got to the following:

Copy the file back to the original folder (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\).
Delete the .txt extension on the hosts file

Was not apparent to me how to do this in Windows 7, e.g. how to copy the file back into the original folder, other than right-clicking "copy" over 2.18.213.82 redir.metaservices.microsoft.com. When I did, couldn't find anyplace to copy to, and and didn't see any .txt extensions on any files anywhere. Could you be more specific on how to copy the file back to the original folder? Was I in the original folder when I was in the "Hosts" file where I typed 2.18.213.82 redir.metaservices.microsoft.com? And where would I find the .txt extention? Does it get put on the file when I "saved" it (no option given where to "save" when I hit "save", nothing popped up anywhere that I could see), and does it end up somewhere else other than in the "hosts" file? Thanks.

FileHippo App Manager 4 days 17 hours ago jhvance

At the end of June (2019), the FH app that runs on my different W10 and W7 systems (and has on all of my systems for most of the past 15 years) began not finding any new updates, and when I actually looked at their "latest" software updates page it had not been changed since June 28th. After some digging, I discovered that the owner (Well Known Media) had apparently closed shop and their web domain (wkmedia.com) registry had expired. It's unclear whether FH remains viable or is now a zombie website that will go dark when its domain registry also expires, or will be resurrected if and when WKM is able to sell its asset to someone else. There are some news items in their site with dates in July, so that minimal activity makes me slightly hopeful it will return to functionality, but no guarantee.

So, for the time being I'm looking for a good (and trustworthy) replacement while reverting to the cumbersome old methods from a couple of decades back. If you were thinking about installing the FH app, I'd wait.

CleanMem WORKS on my Dell Latitude E6400 which is already maxed out at 8GB RAM (that is the chipset limit - no way to add more) and running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

If you are able to add more physical RAM, that is always going to be a lot better than using something like this. Memory is not that expensive.

But if you're up against the physical memory limit already, this can definitely help make the most of what you have.

It DOES a better job of squeezing out the optimal usage of memory than Windows does.

It can also help make up for poorly programmed apps that are memory leakers (keep increasing use of but don't release memory back to Windows).

There is no magic to this app and it was programmed as well as any similar utility could possibly be. It simply makes use of the existing Windows API to do memory housekeeping that Windows often fails to do, which is clearing out memory from apps no longer needed in memory. It does a FANTASTIC job of that. It's very visible when you see the monitor saying 75% or more of RAM is used and you clear it. It can be set to do that automatically so you never see usage get that high.

If you have a RAM-limited situation (where you cannot use the optimal amount of RAM and cannot add more), PLEASE install CleanMem. I have used it for years and my laptop does not bog down to a crawl anymore which used to happen frequently without it.

Anyone who says this doesn't work has not used it, period. It absolutely DOES work, but you have to be realistic and use it properly. I would advise not clearing RAM until it gets over 50% usage at least and you also do not want to run a ton of apps and browser windows regardless. Remember, it clears memory from UNUSED processes, not used ones. Even Windows 10 doesn't do that very well. Windows 10 does other things very well like spying on you and forcing updates to reboot your computer so you lose your work.

view
CleanMem 5 days 20 hours ago ssybesma

It just WORKS and is the absolute best option when the memory on your machine is maxed out (short of buying a new computer).

I have seen the difference numerous times when I turn it off.

If you have a spinning HDD, a second thing you can do is replace it with an SSD and increase your swap file size to double your installed RAM.

Fans of classic pixel art and color-cycling should check out "Living Worlds". The app is an official and approved revival of the dynamic pixel art scenes from Mark Ferrari, legendary artist from such classic games as Loom and The Secret of Monkey Island as well as the more recent Thimbleweed Park. The scenes, originally from a early 90s personal organizer, have been passed around the Internet periodically, but now they are available, with all the animations restored, in a mobile app that includes Live Wallpaper for Android users. Watch the light change as the day progresses, see the weather change in real time, and notice the tiny details that come and go. The app is available from Pixfabrik on Google Play (and Apple’s App Store, but without the Live Wallpaper feature) for $1.99: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pixfabrik.livingworlds

Windows 10 needs 8GB or more of space to install, I use a 16GB USB flash drive with no issues at all, haven't tried an 8GB. Most regular DVD's have close to 5GB, not enough space to burn the ISO.
You can get larger DVD's if that's the route you want to go. :)

thanks for the reply James

Well give it a go and see if you can control the ccleaner behaviour you don't want.

at least on win 7:

- legit items will start up if they (or a shortcut) are in the startup folder (a folder under the users folder hierarchy). You can see that in start menu / all programs

- Also, check msconfig or the equivalent (I don't use Win 10). You can control items that startup there too.

-- I normally just dive into the registry (the msconfig startup items are simply registry entries under LOCALMACHINE and CURRENTUSER)

e.g. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Ordinarily, you should just be able to control application behaviour from within the app, assuming the app is correctly coded (i had a weird one with a beta app, where checking run at startup in the app resulted in a second registry startup entry being created, so had to remove the duplicate).

Regarding alternatives to ccleaner - i know you didn't exactly ask for it, since ccleaner may well behave appropriately after all, but i had a recent look at them. There are loads.

I stupidly didn't make notes but the only one I've still got on my machine is "bleachbit".

It's open source and still maintained.

I rejected it though because:

- the way you select files to delete felt clunky compared to ccleaner (though very similar)
- the way ccleaner handles files flagged for deletion is much clearer and easier to review
- Also, when i ran bleachbit, it just threw up an unhelpful error message after cleaning. It simply said "errors: x" (x being a number). Didn't say what errors occurred or which files might have been affected by the errors.
- oh and despite flagging firefox cookies to delete, when i checked afterwards (with ccleaner), apaprently 43 cookies had not been removed.
- and talking of cookies, i actually find the ccleaner option to exclude certain cookies from deletion very useful (e.g. if i want to stay logged in somewhere, perhaps whatsapp web or google)

Ccleaner IMO is really good, though there are privacy question marks about it.

view
Best Free PC Cleaner 1 week 2 days ago James9bent

Hmm, so your question got me thinking. I used to disable Active and System Monitoring under the now defunct 'Monitoring' tab to stop Ccleaner running in the background and thought the function had been removed which was the reason I could no longer stop ccleaner running at startup (unchecking the 'run cleaner when computer starts' didn't stop Ccleaner starting at boot-up). But. You mentioned Smart Cleaning, which I had not realised is the renamed Monitoring tab. Also, I recently switched to Win 10 to avoid end of Win 7 support in a few months, and at boot up, regardless of my attempts to stop it I kept getting a pop-up asking if I wanted to allow Ccleaner to run - meaning it was starting up. So I guess back to the drawing board, I might have been a bit hasty there...

So I finally gave in and uninstalled Ccleaner after using it for around 12 yrs or more. Persistent updating was something I was willing to compromise with and did so for some time, the inability to only run Ccleaner when I wanted was not - removing the ability to disable monitoring was what did it for me.
Ccleaner's final act on my pc was to uninstall itself. Going to try Glary Utilities as that seems to fit my bill. :)

What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 2 weeks 4 days ago Krunk

Thanks for the response, rhiannon.
No the keyboard didn't come with any software and not even the flimsiest documentation.
But I will definitely check out your suggestions when I get some time. My immediate reaction, though, is to wonder whether it's possible to assign--let's say--"reload" to the F5 key when that's not a primary key function like SHIFT or ENTER or SPACE or a specific character.
Incidentally, one of my favorite Function key combinations is SHIFT+F3 which toggles selected text through CAPS, LOWER CASE & SENTENCE &/or TITLE CASE (though it doesn't work in all applications).

view
What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 2 weeks 4 days ago rhiannon

I'm not sure about changing keyboard settings the BIOS, I'm not familiar with the options that HP uses in whatever BIOS flavor they use.
I'm assuming your keyboard doesn't have any software that would allows you to make changes like Logitech or Razer keyboards do that let you customize the keyboard.
Outside of getting a new keyboard, I would give SharpKeys a try. There's an installable version (MSI) and a portable version (EXE). I'd go with the portable version.
There's a good how-to at How-To Geek on how to use SharpKeys, it's a few years old but it covers Windows from Vista to 10.
Map Any Key to Any Key on Windows 10, 8, 7, or Vista.

If that doesn't work, my last suggestion would be AutoHotkey, it's a great program but there's a learning curve if you're new to that type of software. It would allow more extensive keyboard modification. The link to the How to Remap Your Keyboard How To in the article above has some good AutoHotkey suggestions.

Someone else might have a suggestion and chime in as well.

view
What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 2 weeks 4 days ago Krunk

My problem is with a wireless keyboard that came with an HP desktop. The Function keys don't perform what you would expect to be the default---as you outlined above.
Instead, you have to use the Fn key along with the Function keys to rename, refresh. etc. Otherwise they act as "action" keys to change volume, display brightness, et al. There is no keyboard lock/unlock toggle for the Fn key. I learned that on some laptops, you can change the setting in the BIOS---System Configurations, but there is no such setting on my desktop (probably because the keyboards on desktops are interchangeable).

What Do the Function Keys on the Keyboard Do? 2 weeks 4 days ago rhiannon

That's interesting. Do you think it's the operating system, the keyboard itself, or something else?

I personally do not find the F keys anywhere near consistent from PC o PC - they seem mostly dependent on the manufacturer or model.
I avoid them unless I see real value to them.

Thanks for your comment. :)

I didn't mention the function keys were on the top row of the keyboard, I'll amend that when I get to my desktop.

I think this line in the first paragraph addresses laptops: "They are often combined with the Alt and Ctrl keys to do certain tasks, and on laptops, can also have dual functions like turning the volume up or down when used with a designated key, usually the Fn key."

Great article. It relates to the "top row of Function Keys" on the top row of most keyboards

However a lot of laptop keyboards also have a Function key "Fn" usually next to the Ctrl Key on the bottom row of the Keyboard
This additional Function (Fn) key, adjust laptop settings including volume, screen brightness, and so on, usually used in conjunction with a F1-F12 key

There is no mention of this laptop related Function (Fn) key in this article, so things are a little ambiguous

How To Change The Windows 8 Background Colour 3 weeks 15 hours ago Stan Schultz

Here's how I controlled the brightness on my laptop's screen, running Windows 8.1.

WARNINGS: While this may differ slightly with other versions of Windows, it should at least give you a starting point. Note that this trick doesn't require fiddling with the registry. Remember: It's always a good idea to create a new restore point and backup your files before making changes to your system! Your mileage may differ.

In the list that follows, the first word or phrase for each paragraph indicates a choice or option you should select. The following text offers comments or elaborations.

Control Panel. If all else fails, try pressing [Windows] + R and typing "control panel."

Power Options. This should load the "Choose or customize a power plan" window. Ignore the screen brightness slider control at the bottom. (You can experiment later at your peril.)

Create a Power Plan. Look along the left margin.

Plan Name. Look for the box towards the bottom. Surely you can be more creative than "My Custom Plan 1!"

Next. (Duh!)

Create. This is at the bottom of the resulting window, "Change Settings for the plan: XXXXXXX." You needn't waste your time fiddling with their pathetic little adjustments on this page. (Why Microsoft thought this page was necessary instead of showing us the whole shebang up front will forever remain a mystery.) This should drop you back to the "Choose or customize a power plan" window with the radio button next to your new power plan ticked.

Change plan settings. Look to the right of your plan name. This should return you to the "Change Settings for the plan: XXXXXXX" window, only this time there's an added link at the bottom.

Change advanced power settings. This should present you with another box/window ("Power Options") with a whole list of power settings. (You can experiment later at your peril.)

Change settings that are currently unavailable. Why Microsoft thought this step was necessary will also forever remain a mystery.

Display. Scroll down to the bottom of the list. Click the little box.

Display brightness. From here it's more or less self-explanatory.

Apply. BE SURE TO CLICK THIS OPTION BEFORE YOU EXIT! Clicking "OK" usually also works, but after all your efforts, why take a chance? (Potentially, some custom Windows' installations made by OEMs - not pointing any dirty fingers here - may change how this works.)

OK. (Duh!) Your power plan is all set and running. Probably no need to reboot. (But if you feel compelled to, be my guest!)

Note that this doesn't change screen color or any image on the screen, only its brightness. And once you learn this trick you can readjust screen brightness and a bunch of other power consumption issues just about anytime it's convenient or necessary.

I presume, because I've not tested this, that this will also control a monitor connected via a VGA cable. However, if you've connected a flat screen HDTV via an HDMI cable (as I have), it will work on your laptop's screen but it may not have any effect on your TV. Control your TV's screen brightness by using the "Menu" or similar button on your TV's remote.

I hope this helps.

Google Drive and Google Photos Are Splitting: Here's What You Need to Know 3 weeks 4 days ago rhiannon

Do you have any citations for that information? I would appreciate it if you know where you saw it and would pass it along.

My understanding is that Google Drive and Google One are two different services.

Google Drive is a free storage service provided to anyone with a Google account and isn't shutting down according to Google.

Google One is a paid subscription that gives you more storage across Google services and isn't being discontinued as far as I can determine.

Google Photos is not closing or shutting down according to Google.

Google Plus recently shut down. Photos there needed to be moved to Google Photos or downloaded before the April 2, 2019 shut down date if you wanted to retain them. All other Google Plus data could be download via Google's Takeout. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Strange? I heard or read that Google Drive was no more, and had become Google One. Further I heard that Google Photo's was being decomissioned, much like iTunes. This could be a step in that direction?

Zemana has a portable version for v2.74 and an installer version for v3.0. I have reviewed v2.74 in this article because it's better than v3.0 which removed some cool features of v2.74, and their creator has left the company, I believe.

Zemana like other Second opinion scanners here doesn't have real-time protection, which is why it's listed as trial version in download page with an option to upgrade. However scanning and removal of malware is totally free.

As far as I can make out this is the freeware link and I've also changed this in the product details. MC - Site Manager https://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Zemana-AntiMalware.shtml
"The free version of Zemana AntiMalware isn't exactly packed with features, but the upside is that new users should have no problems figuring out how everything works. A scan can be launched in just a few seconds, and it will be over almost as quickly. No scanning options need to be configured, as one click is all it takes."

I may be missing something, but after going to multiple websites ,including the link in your article,I cannot find a free version of this app. Only a 30 day trial version appears to be available. I did find the portable version but that too is a 30 day trial.
