Especially since that popup in the bottom right hand corner only ever links to the page I'm already on!
And its subscribe box is definitely useless to those of us (the majority of your readers?) already subscribed and could be a static part of the page, instead of an annoying, text obscuring pop out.

Thanks a lot. Lately been a ton of those Cookies Used Here fat banners due to the new change rules.
As to Prebake. Click the top most offer to add to uBlock Origin. Auto adds the 2 lines needed. I tried the
"smart way" by clicking within uBlock and adding just the url line under the bottom choice of Import. No No.
Just click that top offer on landing page of Prebake and let than add the 2 lines which then show inside uBlock as:
Title & below that the URL.

Oddly enough, the instructions for uBlock Origin didn't work for me as I couldn't finf Options, only Preferences and there were no 3rd party filters. Instead, I went to Filters and clicked on Import and then pasted the link you posted and it now appears in my Filter list!

Many thanks Rhiannon for an excellent find. ;-)

When I click on Adblock Plus Options, in the General tab at the bottom it shows:

More filters>Prebake - Filter Obtrusive Cookie Notices and with the option to REMOVE.

So I believe it is installed.

Maybe one of the several changes I've previously made in
"about:config" is causing a conflict. I don't recall all those changes, so for now I won't worry about it and just tolerate those cookie advice pop-up messages.

I'm using it and not having any issues on the latest Firefox. I checked that the list item was actually added to uBlock Origin, you might want to make sure it's been added to ABP.

Added "Prebake - Filter Obtrusive Cookie Notices" to ABP (Firefox Browser - current stable version) but it doesn't appear to have done anything. Both MajorGeeks and gHacks still display the notice regarding cookies. And MG also requests to be whitelisted even though it's already in the filter whitelist.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Following the directions above, go into the HOSTS file, delete the line musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com and add this line:
2.18.213.82 redir.metaservices.microsoft.com

Save and replace the HOSTS file as outlined above. That should do it.

I would create a copy of the HOSTS file (maybe rename it HOSTSold) and save it somewhere just in case you need to restore it.

My guess is that a program changed the directory for finding album information.

These are the notices that pop up asking you if you want to receive notifications from a website, with options to allow, not allow, or never let the notification appear again for that site.
If you agree, the notifications usually appear as a pop up or other noticeable change in your browser, sometimes accompanied by a sound, usually when there's new content added to a page. For example, if you visit a website about weather forecasts, you might get a notice asking if you want to allow notifications. If you agree, you'll likely see notifications appear in your browser when a weather alert or breaking weather news is issued.
I'm not sure the kind of pop up you mention that notifies you of an article you're reading.

I share the enthusiasm and respect already expressed by others for this Gizmo site and for the objective and reliable advice it offers. So I was happy to send a donation (a modest one, as I'm a pensioner!).

As MidnightCowboy notes in his post about GHacks, the problem of sustaining independent sites is widespread. Covert funding and advertising undermines trust - especially if such funding is not transparent.

I wonder if it is worth examining the approach taken by another online-advice site. Ironically the site, MoneySaving Expert (which was founded and run in the UK) was conceived to offer impartial financial advice!

Their service involves providing reviews and links to other products and services (much like Gizmo's does - only their links were to banks, insurance companies, building societies etc, rather than software providers). They were concerned that their credibility would be compromised by advertising.

The arrangement they made was to be upfront and transparent about "sponsored links". Their reviews and analysis included links to the products concerned. The arrangement was evidently that MSE obtained a click-through payment when anyone clicked on the link. But such links were always marked by an asterisk and an explanatory note. And IIRC there was always an option to navigate to the provider's site or product without using the sponsored link.

This isn't perfect. It relies on the editorial integrity of the site-owners to maintain an objective approach, and to avoid selecting or giving prominence only to products/sites which offer to sponsor links. But it is perhaps one possible way to keep sites such as Gizmo's alive.

Summary: PDF-XChange Editor Portable was able to edit text and save without a watermark.

I downloaded PDF-XChange Editor Portable today from PortableApps. https://portableapps.com/apps/office/pdf-xchange-editor-portable

It ran the installer, and installed to a local usb folder. Not sure how portable it actually was.

I was able to edit text, but not lines, shapes, images, etc. If I did edit those paid-only features, it warned me, it would save with a watermark. I just edited text and it saved with no watermark, and I used FoxIt Reader to search for the changed text and the old text was no longer found.

Please: do NOT utilize it. After some usage it REQUIRES to buy the licence. Moreover during the uninstallation process (by using Revo Uninstaller Pro) I had some issues (even if I'm not fully sure it is just an AOMEI issue). Windows was not anymore able to boot. I had to restore the system to a previous Restore Point.
Finally, to fully remove it, I had to utilize Total Uninstaller with a valid license to (hopefullly) completely uninstall it (still NOT 100% sure): even if the Installation Directory was there, and I can see uninst000.exe, by double clicking on it the system says it is no there !!!
Alternatively, BEFORE installing it just google "AOMEI how to safely uninstall/delete".
Worst experience ever. Marco

I was delighted to contribute again and will continue to do so but I think you're right - you shouldn't have to go around asking for donations.

I love visiting Gizmo's Freeware but more importantly I TRUST your site to be objective and honest about the stuff you review. This, I think, is your unique selling point.

I wonder if there is a place for a Gizmo sub-site that reviewed commercial software *and services* on the same honest basis but funding itself from a membership fee rather than supplier kick-backs.

As an IT professional I know how difficult and time-consuming it is to evaluate different products (desktop software, online services, VPNs etc) when the need arises. This is made even more difficult by the sites funded by companies that just *happen* to rate theie products most highly in a group test. I'd be happy to pay for access to reliable reviews.

Not an answer to your problem but offered as food for thought!

Nimbus Note 1 year 4 weeks ago ErikJon

In all fairness, Nimbus ia not bad, but it just needs lots of improvement, and sending suggestions to the developer does not usually help much.

Another example is the simple fact that it cannot search and find key words within the entire collection of notes, at one time. In other words, if you have 75 notes stored, each one has a title, and you can only search the titles for a key word, or else open any one note individually and search within that one note, but not across the text of all your notes combined globally. Consequently, if you cannot remember whuch note contains that key word, and ut is nowhere in the titles, you will have to open each of the 75 notes individually and aearch one by one.

On the other hand, ColorNote will let you search all the notes at once, display the note containing the word searched for, and even highlight the word for you, once opened . Of course, ColorNote has provlems of its own, but it can handle simple searching, while Nimbus cannot.

Hey folks, I have resisted the change to FireFox or Google browsers since I started with windows 98SE, so a long time. The reason is I never fully trusted myself to delve into areas that were too techie for me.
Now I am on Windows 10 and IE 11 and Yahoo mail tells me it will no longer support IE11 as of July 31 2018 and that I should switch to FF or Ggle, So, my question is twofold The discussion by gizmo.richards on FF (https://www.techsupportalert.com/firefox.htm) doesn't say anything about IE11 or Microsoft Edge in relation to FF use, so should it and 2. Can I install FF for Yahoo and use M Edge or IE11 alternately.
I just am not confident enough to run 3 browsers but am also concerned about the learning curve for an entirely new browser.

PNotes.NET 1 year 4 weeks ago Elltxone

I've been using Pnotes.NET for a little over a month now on my Win 10 workstation. I have about 6 notes created and I like the keyboard command to show or hide all notes. That is how I want it to work. However, during this time Pnotes.NET has crashed on me several times. Typically it happens right after doing a save on a note that I've made changes on. But it's also happened after relocating a position of a note and then using the keyboard HIDE command and system lock. If this were an occasional thing I could live with it, but the frequency that it happens has me looking at the other alternatives. It may be time to move away from .NET to get some stability. :-( Just sayin.

view
Stickies 1 year 4 weeks ago Elltxone

This seems like a good program for notes. The one thing I WISH was that it had a keyboard hotkey to HIDE all notes and SHOW all notes. I don't like having to use the mouse and notification area icon to hide notes. At least it's fast and easy to SHOW by a simple click on the icon, but setting them back to being hidden is a pain. Going to read more and maybe find a way to do it. Wish me luck!

I use QuiteRss Portable that way.

And I really liked Mozilla Thunderbird's bar graphs of date frequency of any searched keywords or phrase displays. Such analysis of the feeds can be useful to see "trends" over time. The Thunderbird mailer (which I only use as an RSS reader) also comes in a portable form.

I have a bunch of PubMed RSS feeds that I catch up on at any computer in computer-cafes, libraries etc.

Would you please clarify that comment?

The page where the program is downloaded from says its free for Windows and Mac. I downloaded the program and tested it extensively on two different computers with two versions of Windows before writing it up. There were no upgrade or sales prompts, it wasn't a program that has basic features for free with more features with a paid upgrade. If you had a different experience downloading, installing and using the program it would be helpful to know about it.

FontLab has paid programs, but the app that I downloaded and tested is a small app they offer for free. I would add that the program is available as at some of download sites like cnet, where it's listed as free, and is reviewed favorably on several sites. There's a YouTube tutorial on how to use it with Cricut, if you're a crafter and use die cut machines.

While the installers downloaded DIRECTLY from their forum (http://forum.eagleget.com/viewforum.php?id=3) is clean from the luminati SDK thing, though it still bundles the iNewTab extension.

I use one of the translation services when I visit that site. The download and other buttons don't translate but are pretty easy to figure out, the text seems to translate well enough. They have a wallpaper app on the Google Play site, that's how I discovered the site. :)

Improve Online Search Skills With Free Courses From Google 1 year 1 month ago gizmofan1248

I'm not trying to defend Google - but if you use their search engine - why not be better at it? And you can avoid tracking your searches e.g. by using Startpage (which uses Google search but anonymizes your search).

I could not find the free version either. Only a beta version.
Also they want all your details on registration and in this day and age, that means they are trading your details so for that one reason I am not going to try and find the free version.

How to rip DVD movies using freeware HandBrake 1 year 1 month ago whoareyou

I used to be a loyal user of handbrake, but as my more and more DVDs can't be grabbed by handbrake, I am very disappointed with this software. Handbrake alternatives such as the Wonderfox DVD ripper have been updated, and all of my DVDs have been successfully crawled so far. The software will always be eliminated if it cannot inject new technology.
