LastPass sent the email today. " On May 1, 2018, we will be shutting down Xmarks."
I'll need an alternative. I have hundreds of bookmarks that I don't want to lose , and they need organized.

I was equally distressed to learn of the demise of xmarks, but found an alternative in Bookmarkos. It is not free, but it does handle transferring the files from xmarks without a hitch across most browsers in Windows 10.

Yep, this is really terrible. I have a Yahoo account, and I don't use it that much. Now if anyone has any idea how to download all of my emails, then please share. I would like to then delete my Yahoo account. Will have to check too, whether I am using the email for any other service. One is Flickr, which is thankfully out of Yahoo now.

I don't know where they will be. I suspect Verizon didn't buy Yahoo for the email service so it may not be a priority for them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know a few people who like and use Yahoo and probably will continue to do so. My aim is to provide information so people can make informed decisions, whatever they decide to do. :)

This is a reliable source and a pretty recent article for getting your email from Yahoo, but it uses POP3 not IMAP:

SmugMug just bought Flickr. I'm not sure how that will impact users or what changes will be made, other than to current Terms and Conditions.

You can use Thunderbird to sync with Yahoo and then copy the emails you want to save and paste them into a local folder.
As far as using Yahoo, I have only used it for junk mail like if you need to enter an email address to get into a site. My actual
email is at another more secure service.

The settings to use to get Yahoo email on most email clients (Windows and Mac) are here.
I haven't tested them as I no longer have access to a Yahoo email account.

I usually use disposable or temporary email addresses or a gmail address for sites that might use my address to send me email I don't want to receive.

view
Yahoo Users Must Waive Class Action Rights Or Stop Using Service 1 year 7 months ago Anupam

I haven't used any email client till now. Let's see if I get around to it.

I used to use Yahoo as a main account years ago. Not anymore though.

AMAZING! Just after transferring my bank notification emails from Gmail due to Google snooping concerns. Yes, I was locked out of Yahoo! until the terms were read and I agreed. Freakout! In other words, "all your info is mine"! Google freaked me out after browsing my Google history.
Immediately after reading Yahoo's terms I started emptying the emails. Sent them to an Outlook address. Saved to .pdf or as webpages. Now to move bank emails to Tbird!
And thanks Rhiannon for the pop imap link. It probably will help configure Tbird.

Anybody any idea about how AT&T email accounts are affected?

AT&T years ago made that wise decision to have Yahoo technically handle AT&T emails.

In my area affected accounts are *@att.net and *@sbcglobal.net.

No matter how discouraging the Internet Security gets, I will continue marching on. In 1997, the first email address I had; after gofer mirc. etc. was Yahoo. Just as the Internet was born, people like us take more of the risks and plow through dangerous trenches. The worst of the Internet are ads from Tom Selleck to get the helpless into reverse mortgages. Commercial ads eventually will be a part of Windows. I hate election time, TV via Internet begins to crawl.

view
Yahoo Users Must Waive Class Action Rights Or Stop Using Service 1 year 7 months ago rhiannon

Me, too. I'm in for the long haul.

Conmercial ads are already part of Windows 10.
https://www.maketecheasier.com/block-ads-windows10/

Since they gave Windows 10 upgrades out for free it appears Microsoft no longer considers non-enterprise class users to be customers - we are now a revenue stream.
Taking a page from Facebook and Google, apparently. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

view
Yahoo Users Must Waive Class Action Rights Or Stop Using Service 1 year 7 months ago papavonschoen

rhiannon; the ultimate goal is to put the ads right in front our face in windows 10. As users we are part of the problem. We accept what could have been many more options 10 years ago.

I can't find a reliable, definitive answer for either of those two services.
To the best of my knowledge, Yahoo does not own AT&T, but it is the email provider.
It would make sense that if those aren't Yahoo accounts, they aren't subject to Yahoo's terms and services, but, I would check with AT&T and sbcglobal email support to be sure.

"all your infos are belong to us" :)

I believe Google scans all emails as well, and uses the content to target ads. Google has done this for some years that I know of.

I recommend locking down everything in your Google account unless you use Google services across devices, then some of it isn't practical but a good part of it would be applicable I think. Gmail and Google Calendar are the only two Google services I use across devices.
https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/control-google-tracking-new-pri...

I recently double checked my gmail accounts using this process and it still works.

The settings for Thunderbird or another email client look like they would work - before I shared the link I did some searching and the same settings came up in other articles, but they were older than the one I provided so I went with the most recent information.

view
Yahoo Users Must Waive Class Action Rights Or Stop Using Service 1 year 7 months ago rhiannon

I agree. I only use Windows 10 on my laptop, it's not used often. All the ads are blocked there. Everything is as locked down as I can possibly get it on Windows 10, the connection is set to metered, etc. etc.

I doubt it will ever be my main operating system unless some things change. At the moment the plan is to switch over to Linux full time when support for Windows 8.1 ends.
In part that's due to limited bandwidth, both speed and data caps - one round of Windows 10 updates wipes out my data cap for a month and my internet usage is then limited to checking email. Web pages won't load, the connection is too slow. Ah, the joys of rural living. :)

With Linux at least I can buy a new CD/DVD when a new version is released for not much money and my data and bandwidth stay intact.

view
Yahoo Users Must Waive Class Action Rights Or Stop Using Service 1 year 7 months ago papavonschoen

on one computer, it happens to be a laptop, I evaluate per-releases of win 10. It certainly wouldn't be my main computer. I don't have nearly the problems others do :-) if that makes any sense. Security is the main difficulty, such a mess. Today I accidentally found an intrusion into Firefox passwords. Why anybody would want my information is beyond me. Linux seems like the best route but being an old 67 has slowed me down ;)

view
Yahoo Users Must Waive Class Action Rights Or Stop Using Service 1 year 7 months ago rhiannon

It makes sense. I run a release or two behind Windows 10 on my laptop.

Security is always an issue, for all operating systems as far as I can tell.

I don't enable password saving in any browser though I'm a Firefox fan from early beta many years ago. I prefer a password manager. :)

This is a useful - if worrying - heads-up on how Yahoo is trying to protect itself from data-misuse complaints from potentially disgruntled customers. In the wake of growing concern about the way Google snoops in order to target ads, and the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal, the big players are obviously trying to do more to fend off legal challenges.

I have a couple of Yahoo email accounts but am thinking of giving them up. More worrying (this side of the pond, in UK) is that I believe Yahoo is the subcontracted operator of the email services provided by the UK's major telecoms firm, BT. Presumably a similar relationship to that which Yahoo has with AT&T in the US? If so, then many more people will be affected than just those who have a "Yahoo" account.

view
Yahoo Users Must Waive Class Action Rights Or Stop Using Service 1 year 7 months ago rhiannon

If other companies are using Yahoo as a carrier for their email traffic, they probably aren't subject to Yahoo's terms and conditions - it would depend on how the agreements are structured I would guess.

I agree Verizon/Yahoo is moving to protect itself - I've been seeing that Oath terms of service notice pop up on sites that are apparently owned or affiliated with Yahoo/Verizon, the most recent being Engadget. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@rhiannon - Great find, as usual. Thank you. :) Btw, I'm sure his hair clippers have a vacuum-device attached.

@crosseyedlemon - A cure for male-pattern baldness was developed during the Apollo Eleventeen Mission. It's called "Chia" but, unfortunately, it only works in space. And, since you brought it up: After James T. , as corny, over wrought and laughably macho as he was, there is NO way Jean-Luc should have been permitted anywhere NEAR the bridge of the Enterprise, except, perhaps, to serve a nice quiche.... which, we all know, real men don't eat. He's much better suited to lasciviously sneaking and scurrying in the shadows of clandestine, Earth-bound concerns.

Rob, in my home state (South Australia), if you are a member of any public library in the State, the card number you are given has access to the library.pressdisplay.com website, which claims to have access to 3,000 newspapers worldwide. It's not just the front page, it's the complete newspaper you can access. I've been using it for a few years now and it works well.
According to their Help menu: "Library.PressDisplay.com is the most convenient and complete way to read all your favorite newspapers and magazines on one site. With Library PressDisplay users gain access to publications from within the library, from home and around the world on the day they are published. Library.PressDisplay.com enhances your reading experience with a simple user interface and easy-to-use navigation tools."
Trust this helps.

I had the previous GOTD version of WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe, which identified itself as v5.9.8 with Build Date of January 5, 2017. I downloaded, installed, and registered today's offer and ended up with the same thing. That's OK, but your description says " And if you have used the software before, this new offer will get you the latest version (released 3 months ago)." So do I have the latest version or not? Is there any limit on the version being given away?

1. The version activated by Giveaway License works the same as the one being sold, which becomes a "free DVD ripper". But it won't let you update.

2. Only when you purchase the Full Version can you enjoy lifetime free upgrade and take advantage of all new features and enhanced functions.
