Hi Pattern-chaser
As Fairportfan suggests, if your Kindle Fire is rooted, you can install the Google Play Store on it, then you'll have access to all apps on there. Instructions here.
http://tapthattech.com/2013/08/how-to-install-google-play-on-kindle-fire/
Otherwise, I've emailed the AppGratis developers and will report back to you once I have a reply in a reasonable timeframe. I will give them a few days to respond/
Not residing in Canada or the USA, I can't easily check app availability in any given country short of getting a VPN and checking each one which is not practical. There are no clues on the Developers website, but I've emailed them to find out, if that was your question. Allow a few days please so I can answer.
I haven't heard back from AppGratis following my enquiries on your behalf. That's dissapointing. There appears to be no official direct download so you can install it on your Kindle device. A search revealed you can get a version from 3rd party sites but this isn't recommended as they are not trusted, sources, so this method is at your own risk.
I haven't heard back from AppGratis, so I can't answer your question if I understand what it is you are asking if anything. Perhaps other readers from Canada can?
I recently used AOMEI Backupper to clone a working HDD in one machine onto a new larger HDD to replace a corrupted O/S in another machine; the process went off smoothly and the target machine booted right up and all programs and processes worked fine.
It took just minutes to swap out the drive and be back up and running.
If I can do it, anybody can; AOMEI is very user-friendly.
I backed up my old laptop with AOMEI Backupper - no problems. I then tried to transfer the backup to my new computer. I wiped off everything from the new computer, Windows 10 OS, files, apps - the lot. Is there any way I can recover my lost OS and other contents of my new computer - an ACER ?
I grabbed the free copy and took a look at it. Seems pretty straightforward with the exception that if you want to make a bootable clone, you have to buy the Pro version.
@AndyR: why is your preference for AOMEI? Sure, it's pretty good for free, but without the (paid) feature of managing backup schemes, it's crippled almost beyond use. [commercial references removed as per site rules]
Please: do NOT utilize it. After some usage it REQUIRES to buy the licence. Moreover during the uninstallation process (by using Revo Uninstaller Pro) I had some issues (even if I'm not fully sure it is just an AOMEI issue). Windows was not anymore able to boot. I had to restore the system to a previous Restore Point.
Finally, to fully remove it, I had to utilize Total Uninstaller with a valid license to (hopefullly) completely uninstall it (still NOT 100% sure): even if the Installation Directory was there, and I can see uninst000.exe, by double clicking on it the system says it is no there !!!
Alternatively, BEFORE installing it just google "AOMEI how to safely uninstall/delete".
Worst experience ever. Marco
There are 3 major problems with AOMEI Backupper 5.6:
- It cannot back up an Outlook PST file (this is mentioned in the manual's FAQs). So none of my emails will be backed up!
- If a backup is in progress, you can't reboot. This interrupts the shutdown after all the apps are closed, so you can't cancel the shutdown and continue. The only option is to force a hard reboot. The backup program should be capable of suspending the backup and resuming after the restart.
- The free version does not allow filters, so I can't tell it not to back up the 8GB Windows.iso file. This causes a LOT of unnecessary junk files to be backed up.
The link above goes to a page for the company that just lists a table of contents but goes to ads.
This needs to be checked out so one can find out more about the program prior to downloading.
The download link seems to go to an actual site, however.
Correct site for info should be: http://www.joerg-rosenthal.com/en/antitwin/
Now it would be great if either of these 2 programs would show real-time and/or average bandwidth usage! I often am wondering what device is hogging the internet.
It can be difficult to find out what device is hogging the internet. If it's a wired device, then your router should be able to give you a breakdown of usage by port.
Nirsoft's Network Manager displayed everything including showing separately 2 external hardware drives plugged into a couple of the Pc's.
SoftPerfect's WiFi Guard identified less items connected to my Lan than Nirsoft. In particular it scorned my android devices and was contemptuous of my wifi printer.
So my vote for Nirsoft if only because no one likes to have their peripherals belittled
Hey Jojo. While I was reading the article on robocopy, I was thinking, I wish someone would make a GUI. I haven't used the command line since dos. I get to the end of the article, and find you have granted my wish. Thank you for posting this!
This is a great program. Just be sure to download the "lite" version which is free of any adware. There will be several choices for download, but make certain "lite" is one you download. I have used it for quite some time and never had a problem....plus it's very reliable for update info.
There are options which allow you to chose to include "Beta" if you wish. Check out the "Tools" tab and make sure you chose the ones which will accomplish what you wish to do. You can "ignore" programs if you feel they don't need to be updated -or you can "skip" updates for a week, month, etc. There is also an "Options" tab which can help you set the program up as you wish - like start with Windows, etc.
Also, if you feel an item is reported in error, you can right click it and report "error" or "Beta" if you wish. I recommend it - Kyle Katlin is very responsive to notifications of errors, etc. Thumbs up!
I believe you are incorrect. The "lite" version as opposed to the "RK" version which your are discussing above.
From the KC Softwares Site:
Download Regular installer. May contain sponsors like Relevant Knowledge and/or Somoto.
NoRK NoRK installer. Does not contain RelevantKnowledge but may contain Somoto .
Lite Lite installer. Does not contain any sponsor.
Zip Portable (Zip). Does not contain any sponsor.
I run Windows Defender, MalwareBytes Pro, HitmanPro and never have had any malware indicated from the site (in over 3 years now - Windows 7 and Windows 8). There is NO opt out in the "Lite" nor are any toolbars installed.
Please check it out and let me know if you find something else. Thanks
You shouldn't have downloaded the installer as mentioned in the article which contains adware.
Correction: Only download the portable version.
http://i.imgur.com/jkjb7CI.png
I'm not sure if you're replying to my post or the one that said Avast flagged it, but if extract the setup file yourself, you'll see that a file called itdownload.dll is included in the lite version and a script for Relevant Knowledge is included in the install script, regardless of what the software vendor states.
Just to correct Rob Schifreen's instructions, the Nork version also includes the Relevant Knowledge script and the itdownload.dll file that's in the lite version as explained here:
The only one that doesn't is the portable version and once again, we don't know what code is in the main program exe file that might phone home and download some "goodies" at a later date.
Sorry, it was me who added the warning. I've updated the screenshot and the warning now.
Edit: Thanks for your comment, I've read it now, and will update the article to download only the portable version.
I'm surprised to hear about hitch-hikers on the Lite Version of SuMO. I have use it without incident for quite a while -- earlier, I had used the "NoRK" version, watching the install sequence very carefully.
Sumo is good, but takes a bit of getting used to. It updates almost weekly (so the install version is significant). You will get a few false positives, as well as suggested 'updates' for files embedded in other programs that are inaccessible. When I DO find an update, paranoia requires that I go directly to the program's own site.
All that said, it is an excellent program, especially when augmented with Ninite, FileHippo, and PSI.
The app correctly found about a score of programs needing update, though I thought I had carefully kept my system up-to-date.
Thanks, Gizmo, for the adware warning -- the portable Zip version shows no issue on VirusTotal,MalwareBytes or Avast! BTW, all the .SPK files except your own language may be eliminated.
I am only speaking from actual use of this app - and I have not experienced what you stated when using the "Lite" version. I am not arguing with you - just stating my experience over the last 3 years backed up by MalwareBytes scans, HitmanPro Scans and Windows Defender Scans. I agree the other versions contain some undesirable toolbars and files. I will continue to use it - with my selected settings.
I didn't intend for you to think that I thought you were arguing. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. My opinion of these programs is that if one is going to use them, you're better off getting a good unpacker like Universal Extractor, updating it's individual unpackers, and extracting all programs if you can. In this manner, you can remove the offending ad-ware and run the program as a portable.
My policy is if I can't extract the setup file, I don't use the program (unless it's something I've actually paid for, which is rare these days). Even if buy software, it's always free after rebate.
I tried out the portable version and was surprised at just how many apps seemed out of date, which I found odd because I do weekly checks.
So I decided to check a few against the official sites and the very first 3 that I checked all confirmed that I was using the latest versions, despite Sumo stating that there was an update for a version that the developers themselves had not released.
This raised warning signals for me to wonder whether these supposed updates are hacked and could include malware.
It's my understanding that Secunia PSI only lists updates where there is a security problem fixed, not just bugs squashed or extra program features added.
Edit: Glary utilities also has a function to search for new program versions. It's in the up-arrow icon (white arrow on blue background) on the bottom line of the main screen.
In the For What Its Worth category: I downloaded the sumo_lite version with no problems, and my scanners found nothing suspicious. The program found 76 programs, none of which needed updating; plus a dozen more that it said it couldn't tell if they needed updating or not.
Normally SuMo finds updates correctly. Probably what you're finding are beta versions. You can uncheck beta version update checks by going into Settings->Uncheck "Allow Beta versions"
Unfortunately I have to report that Avast went apeshit during installation. Reported 55 "Threats". I installed the full version but declined the additional software. Avast kicked off at the final stage of installation. I uninstalled it immediately after it had finished installing.
I've seen the other posts about only installing the 'Lite' version and I may give that a go but KC software do state that any additional software can be "....easily rejected during installation and/or removed using Add/Remove Software control panel afterwards, independently from KC Softwares products."
I just came across this website. I found free software monitors are reviewed here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-software-update-monitor.htm
Then I found this article, which seems to add nothing to that. The overall review of software monitors is much more upfront about SUMo's inclusion of Relevant Knowledge, which some commenters seem concerned about. Plus it compares the different software. So why this duplicate article? What am I missing?
I have used SUMO for several months and find it fairly useful. A program listed in Gizmos "hot finds" a few months ago called Unchecky is quite handy for dealing with the bundled software problem that we sometimes encounter.
Not everyone searches for a full review or is prepared to read all of it so these articles are intended to bring not just new as in just released material but established software apps many users will not have heard of. The reason why Sumo was written up is contained in the opening paragraph. MC - Site Manager.
What you're missing is that in the comments to this article, the statement in the previous one you referred to that the "lite" version is free of ad-ware is erroneous. The author in the article on this page corrected his original recommendation to reflect that the lite version has Relevant Knowledge ad-ware after he read the comments I posted.
Here's the paragraph from the software update article you linked to:
"WARNING: Should you decide to download SUMo, please ensure that you download the "Lite" or ZIP/7z version...The full version comes with a program called Relevant Knowledge, which is detected by most security software as spyware. The "Lite" version is identical to the full version, only without the spyware, and therefore deserves to be on this list"
If you say so. I'm not sure how well served readers are by having conflicting information on different pages of the website, by overlooking serious issues with the software, or by ignoring reputable competitors. That's why I think the reviews and comparisons are so much more valuable than promotional blurbs like this one.
If anything, the comments have turned the review of the program into a reason for not installing it, and if it must be used, to choose the portable zip version rather than the "lite" installer.
Further to my earlier comment regarding Avast's reaction to this program my computer has now serious startup problems. My system will not start so I have to manually close the power button and retry, second time I start I am obliged to run system repair. After doing this the SUMo desktop icon keeps reappearing despite my identifying all remnants of this program and deleting it.
My experience tells me that this program is extremely infectious and aggressive, I would advise avoiding this program at all costs.
How about Software Informer (http://software.informer.com/) ?
No one mentions it although it is very efficient , works in the background and is not heavy on resources.
I've been using it the last 2 years and have to say I'm very satisfied.
I think it deserves a full review.
YouTube mp3 pops up in French (which I can read). After converting and downloading the mp3 file I cannot find it anywhere on my PC. YouTube mp3 FAQ says "the download destination is completely out of our control.". This program does not work for me.Don
I've been using ClipConverter add-on with Firefox browser. When you're on a YouTube page, you see three tabs (ClipConverter, mp3 and mp4) on the page. Click on one of them and you either download the video or convert it to mp3 or mp4 and download it. Works like a charm.
Same here as Fairportfan...Chrome on a Macbook Air..."Invalid URL" Pasted right from the YouTube share field. Works all the time when I use the Clip Converter website. It's a shame, I'd love to have an alternative.
Please paste the URL's that are not working for you, It's probably happening because the video is only available in your country.
Paste the whole URL for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBVotNefYME
Thanks
I use YouTube to Mp3 Converter .
Very quick but one has to be careful when inserting URL.
That seems to work more or less identically with the suggested program above.
I don't like Chrome.
The trouble with services like these is that all too frequently they don't work with all videos, or they suddenly stop working entirely. (For a while there were a bunch that apparently required running a local Java applet, which were kind of creepy.)
My usual process is to download the video and then separate the audio stream using VLC.
I like Limesurvey. It's more complex than most of the free offerings out there but it supports decision-based surveys (eg "ask this question only if the answer to question x was y") and can also handle groups of questions as a unit ("ask this set of questions only if the answer to question x was y".)
You can install the complete survey engine on a webserver and it's completely free; or you can develop a survey and have them host it for you -- which costs money, but the first 25 responses in any given month are free and responses beyond that still very reasonable.
Compared to trying to make complex surveys work in a basic list of questions (via page skip logic) it allows you to design a more functional and understandable structure relatively easily and also provides detailed reporting of the results. Limesurvey has a bit more of a learning curve and you need some html skills if you want to go beyond the basic templates that are already included, but the product is absolutely excellent.
thanks for awesome giveaway. I installed Whizfolders and found it had so many features. A lot of information for the program on its website. I was impressed with it. I have my serials for software in individual text files and was able to import them all at once into a new topic I named Various Serials, for me this is awesome as it would take forever to write it all in manually. It now is much easier to search for a serial.

Hi,
SUMo has been updated. Any new comment ?
That's a useful recommendation Robert now that, since the latest version, SoftPerfect's excellent Network Scanner is no longer freeware.
