Very timely. I'd been searching for something like this and pretty much got zip. Haven't tried it yet, but looks to be exactly what I wanted. Thank you.
Right up my alley Rhiannon!

I am running Window 7 on some of my machines. Obviously I only want to use free alternatives at this time since my main OSs are Windows 8.1 and Linux. I found that Defender is still updated on 7 but it is not an Antivirus solution. Antivirus is still needed. As of May of 2020 I found that Avast has added quite a few nag screens as well as making my 7 machine take an extra 3 to 4 minutes to boot up. I will update if I find an alternate program that is more friendly for Win 7.
great apps I didn't know about. thanks. Here are some more great apps I think you should mention in your article https://nektony.com/blog/top-10-best-free-utilities-for-mac
I just came across STDU Viewer which has all the features you could want in a lightweight PDF viewer, even though it is some years since a new version has been published. Unfortunately at the time of writing, the installer links on the developer's website (http://www.stdutility.com) point to an old version (1.6.361) which has a bug. The latest version (1.6.375) is available in portable form on the developer's website. The installer can be found at https://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Other-Office-Tools/STDU-Viewer.shtml
They are the same. But, for some reason, the bing image sometimes won't change on android. An information box states the image is copyright protected and cannot be used as wallpaper. It then keeps the previous days image.
Quite 'clunky' to use and hard to find the "free" version. Too many functions missing in "Free" version. Too much pressure to move to the paid version.
I think this one should be taken off the list altogether.
There's a new kid on the block called Bulk Crap Uninstaller (in short BCUninstaller or BCU). Any comments/reviews on that? It's totally free and can be found at: https://www.bcuninstaller.com/
I can't remember whether it's okay to include the link to free software, so pardon me if that's a no-no.
I know several tools from the list, but I can see there's no mspy mentioned here, why?
Hear a lot about this app and even considering trying it myself. Seems like a relevant parental control tool these days, doesn't it?
https://www.mspy.com/parental-control.html
thank you for this list and all the suggestions..
I think, I start being accustomed to the isolation exactly when it's coming to an end.
But, the platforms you
ve mentioned are interesting and useful anyway ~
The link to GitHub is to the download page. There's a box at the top of the page with the Release version in blue. Under the blue Release version is a link to download Powertoys, it has an msi extension. It's very easy to see. I linked there so that no one has look at anything on Github other than where the download link is.
If that doesn't work for you, you can download it and and then upload it to a file service like Firefox Send. Send them the link so they can download it from there. The file can be downloaded by anyone who has the link. There are other services to share large files, Firefox Send is the one I use. You can use any browser to download the file. Firefox is not required.
I use the Microsoft launcher on my Android smartphone, and that launcher has a feature of presenting a new wallpaper every day. I guess the Bing wallpapers app will allow me to rotate wallpapers every day even if I choose not to use the MS launcher (thought I find the launcher a great combination of feature-richness and simplicity). Does anybody know whether the Bing wallpapers are the same as the daily wallpapers on the launcher? Do they pull from a common pool of pictures or are they completely different?
Is there a way to add the PowerToys to a Win10 system other than going to Github?
I'd like to recommend it for my beloved ImageResizer to my in-laws who keep sending us 25+ MG images. But I can see them thinking that Github isn't a respectable source (sorry, but it's VERY geeky!).
Downloaded this 2 weeks ago and it really messed up my system. All screen icon lost their names completely. After several restarts some of the names came back but not all. Tried to uninstall via control panel. Finally used "Settings/Apps and Features/Uninstall" to get rid of it. Windows 10 v. 1909 April Update
I think so, the last version before MS, the Power Tool download at his site is 0.17.0,(latest) and handing it over to MS looks legit,, WFM fine, I don't need the whole package, already have Process Explorer, the only one I wish they would is improve is Desktops..even though Win 10 sorta has that.
If I may clarify with you what's not downloading. Are you clicking on the link at the bottom of the current release box that's titles PowerToysSetup-0.17.0-x64.msi? I've attached a screen shot of the link. It's working for me now, if it doesn't work for you then all I can suggest is trying an earlier version.
I was a big fan of Altap Salamander. But for the last years, it doesn't seem to browse Windows network shares anymore. It just simply doesn't work. So it's of very little use to me now.
Pretty good post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. James Gart's webpage for Wallpaper Master is not responding. I have one on my desktop and one on my laptop, but they have different menus, and I don't know why. Has any developer taken over from James Gart? I've used this program for years. My only complaint is the limit on number of photos that can be in the source file. Otherwise it's great.
J'utilise depuis longtemps Nimbus et je trouve qu'il est excellent ; il offre de nombreuses possibilités d'enregistrement de ses captures notamment en défilement, au format PDF.
I'm glad it went mostly ok, I'm not sure what's up with the images being corrupted. I uploaded several images from my phone camera and various images that have been on my system for years, uploaded images I grabbed from several different websites, enlarged and downloaded them with no issues. They opened in Photo Viewer and Ifanview. All in all probably 40-50 images.

at rhiannon,
I successfully captured some fine print on suspected counterfeit KN95 Chinese mask that I was unable to do before trying the app. After uploading the original images saved from the website, they would no longer open in Windows Photo Viewer. (tried it twice, all 4 images corrupted) No biggie, worked just enough that it helped. Thanks for the Tech Treat.
It's a good program and I've used it, though for this particular issue it's more than is needed. Booting into Safe Mode to run the program and going through all the options and then running repairs takes quite a while. Or it did the last time I ran it - over an hour. Might be my system, I haven't used it on my laptop.

I've been using this for a while. It's pretty cool. Easy on resources and hasn't caused any problems. Mostly I just use the shortcuts guide.
