http://arstechnica.com/information-t...genuine-users/

Quote:
Speaking to Reuters from the WinHEC conference in China, Microsoft's operating system chief Terry Myerson said, "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10." This means that everyone running Windows 7 or 8.1, irrespective of whether you pirated the operating system or not, will be allowed to upgrade to a legitimate version of Windows 10.
Sounds great! Looks like Microsoft wants everyone to upgrade. Hopefully this should force people to ditch XP?.

That's really good news... but wouldn't this promote more piracy? Or, is it fair to the genuine users?

Guess Microsoft wants to bring all Windows users on board for Windows 10, their latest OS... from that point of view, it's quite good.

It is a great idea to increase the legitimate market share in China and other countries where piracy dominates. Free Windows means that people don't have to pirate it. It also means that there is a way for almost anybody to get Windows 10 for free.

I've always paid money for legitimate versions of Windows as I won't break the law to get it. Even though I don't like theft, it doesn't bother me that the pirates will get Windows for free. The OS landscape has changed and it is quite likely that competition from free operating systems like Android - and to an extent desktop Linux - will keep Windows free even after Windows 10. Even if this doesn't happen, the trend of lower prices for Windows will probably accelerate.

Have you ever known any corporation be fair to anything other than their balance sheet?

Presumably these machines will also receive updates for free which is good news because the masses of pirated systems with updates disabled has always been bad for everyone else.

Default Free upgrade will not legitimize pirated versions

Quote:
"We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade. According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions."

It won't work on the arc plotted in those articles.
