That's true. Real time protection is provided by the Guard - it works like the stand-alone Mamutu (also paid).

If you disable the Guard (there's an option in Configuration), it won't run in the background and you'd be able to use it only as an on-demand scanner. I think the switch to "free version" after the trial period mentioned on Emsisoft's site does exactly that.

Beware of nags, every time you open it nags you about the paid version.
Not sure what will happen if you revert to the freeware license (after 3 days, you can't change to it yourself).

Everything seems to nag these days. Avast, Sandboxie.....etc etc...a small price to pay but when everything on my machine starts nagging it gets tiresome. If i wanted nagging to death i'd have got married so maybe i'll pass on this one after all. Big download for an on demand anyway and i don't tend to visit the less reputable sites out there and besides, i already have Avast, Immunet, Threatfire, Mbam and SAS installed: these things combined with WOT and common sense should be enough. thanks J.L

A new version 5.0.0.64 of Emsisoft Anti-malware is out. Has anyone installed it yet?

I have run into some issues regarding this release.

First, I looked for any option which would let me update the program from within the program itself, but I did not find anything. So, I downloaded the setup for the new version, which is now a whopping 102 MB. But, I think now they are including the latest signature with the setup file itself, therefore, the size of the setup file has increased.

Anyways, I downloaded the file, and tried to install it over the existing installation, but was unable to do so. It gave an error message that access to its uninstall file was denied.

So, I uninstalled the previous version, which demanded a restart, which I did, and after that I installed the latest version.

I did not pay enough attention to the install options, and I chose the first option, to test for 3 days. I thought it would install the freeware version, with the commercial abilities enabled for the first 3 days. I chose that option, and then it updated the signatures, after which I closed the program. I then tried to run it again, but now it gives a screen, that the trial period has expired. There is no Continue button, which I used to get in the previous version. There are only two buttons for Order Now, and Enter License. If I close the screen, the program closes.

I uninstalled the program, and installed it again, and this time I chose the last option which I do not remember correctly, what it said, but it said something about freeware license. I installed, ran the program, updated the signatures, set the options, ran a quick scan, but when these were finished, I again got the same screen of trial expired.

On the product page it says :
Switches to freeware scanner mode on license expiry.

But, it seems I am unable to access the freeware version. What do I have to do to access it again, like I did in the previous version?

The problem is coming because I chose the first option for 3 days?
Do I have to remove it using Revo Uninstaller to remove the registry entries, and try again? I am bewildered by this.

Hi Anupam,
I think this could shed some light into your issue:
http://support.emsisoft.com/topic/23...d-3-day-trial/
Unfortunately, I can't help you any further as I'm not using Emsisoft Anti-Malware at the moment.
But as far as uninstalling it:
1. I woudn't use free Revo Uninstaller as a reboot is required for uninstalling Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Revo does not resume it's session after the reboot. So, if anything is left over, you'd have to go through it manually.
2. I've repeatedly and successfully used AppRemover, which is an uninstaller for removing only security apps; it calls the native uninstaller at first, lets any reboots required go through and resumes & finishes the job after the reboot.
Here's the link to download it - it's portable, no installation needed:

Thanks a lot 26Dolphins. That link was really helpful! It mentions that the 3-day trial expired is a bug. It should convert itself to the freeware version when the 3-day trial expires. This happens when the user deliberately chooses the trial(which I did). The post mentions that the bug will fixed soon.

The same thread contained a link to another page where it says that the bug had been fixed in the beta update of 18th July. Emsisoft Anti-malware was released on 19th July, and the changelog says that the License bug has been fixed. But, seems like it has not been fixed yet . Seems like I will have to post on their forum about this.

Thanks a lot for the AppRemover link. You have mentioned it before too I think. I have also seen its mention on various blogs, and download sites. I will download it now. Seems like a good time to try it out .

I think you should, as the changelog is of a later hour than the post from Lynx who knows his game.

I also followed the link for the beta update, but it's of no use on a working machine.

Indeed, it seems.

I just posted the issue on Emsisoft forum here :

http://support.emsisoft.com/topic/23...-to-version-5/

Seems like the license bug has not been resolved yet, as the thread was started by user on 25th, and they still say that the latest beta version fixes the bug. This was stated for the previous version too. So, lets hope that in the next version, this issue is fixed.

I have had the reply there. It is indeed a bug which they claim has been fixed in the beta builds. So, I would advise anyone looking to update to the latest version of Emsisoft Antimalware, to wait for the next stable version.

Or, if anyone is facing the same problem with license, they can install the latest beta from within the program.
