Spyware Terminator
Here I will be maintaining news items and other information relating to Spyware Terminator

See the revised HIPS category review here:

Please post with any comments or questions you may have. This software has been reviewed on the basis of it's HIPS content only. I will however attempt to answer any queries relating to this program.

Very nice review of ST. I know that many see this program as old and outdated, but I recently had occasion to see this software's HIPS in action. I had installed this program (with the ClamAV component) on my young niece's computer (I have used it on my machine for years since seeing it recommended on Gizmo's site). When she clicked on a malware link and it tried to install MyWebSearch Toolbar, among others, Spyware Terminator was the ONLY program among Arovax Shield, Avast, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware that saw the toolbar install and flagged it during the attempted install. The other programs found various parts of the download during requested searches, but none saw the toolbar. This program also found an autodialer and some other type of malware. Oddly, it missed about 12 registry components found by Malwarebytes and 22 (non-registry) spyware components found by SuperAntiSpyware!

I'm pleased you found the review useful. This is another good example of how a layered approach i.e. a combination of software can deliver optimum protection. Still an issue on some older PC's if you have too many 'active' programs swallowing up the memory but otherwise ST makes a good companion. The results you describe would appear to confirm my own analysis. It's a pity that out of all the software I reviewed Crawler were the only suppliers I was unable to open up a dialogue with. I did have quite a few questions about ST but maybe I'll try again now they've seen the review!

I was going to mention the unusual support forum, but thought that might be out of the scope of the thread. The forum is interesting in that it's difficult to tell if any of the actual ST developers are on there. There are two or three fellows with titles like "General" and the like who are helpful, but one never knows just how they connect with the actual ST team. Still, ST's been one of the few security softwares I've used that seem to hum along with no problems (I just had to delete Malwarebytes- just 6 months old- after it complained of a corrupted update and my original-install ST/ClamAV application has been updating flawlessly for YEARS now!).

Thank you for the review, Kyuzo.

You are welcome - and thank you too for contributing here. I see the debates for best free AV and firewall categories are getting quite "lively" with new posts (and a few insults) arriving like confetti today. It's usually me that provokes this kind of response so I'm pleased to be sitting quietly in my corner for this one!

One thing I would like to read is a current review that rates the Spyware Terminator WITH the ClamAV added on. Most of the online reviews I've found tend to be rehashes of ST's corporate description of the software. Others usually rate the software minus the ClamAV component, even though Crawler points out that the Clam integration makes the software most effective. In my own experience with ST over the years, it's the ClamAV section (during requested searches) which tends to find most of the culprits! In the spyware section of TechSupportAlert, Spyware Terminator is only touched on for its poor detection versus the more popular recent arrivals, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes. Yet there is no mention of whether ClamAV is integrated in that version.

I've welcomed this thread if for nothing else but a rational discussion of Spyware Terminator.

Regards, Kyuzo.

I'm not aware myself of any testing that's been done recently along these lines. You can make a very similar comparison with Emsisoft's a-squared which now also returns results from the added Ikarus engine. Added to this is the problem of defining exactly what 'category' a piece of malware belongs to. I too would welcome an example of ST being pitted against a known selection of malware together with other software. Maybe if this already exists somewhere we could be guided to a link?

A new version of Spyware Terminator has been released. Since some releases, ST has been offerring web installer. Anyone knows any link to download the stand-alone installer? I prefer to download the setup on my PC, and then install a software.
