No problem at all, Kendall. Here's the rationale:

As I understand Spyware Terminator's setup, the ClamAV portion is an add-on which strengthens the active resident scanner for the anti-spyware section by adding its signature list to Spyware Terminator's and makes ST an on-demand virus scanner as well. This is the reason why I wondered why reviewers usually don't use this addition, except that perhaps, technically, it's a separate product helping the ST application. They also recommend adding WebGuard, which is a toolbar and site-rating system somewhat like McAfee Siteadvisor. I didn't like that particular component at all and removed it immediately. I do know that ClamAV (which takes pretty heavy blows for poor detection) does not seem to interfere at all with Avast. Oddly, the ClamAV addition definitely adds to Spyware Terminator's ability to find malware on scans, though whether it actually helps the active scanner is anyone's guess. I spoke with some senior members at the ST forum about whether ClamAV is that big a help on the active scanner and came away just as unsure as before the posts... ClamAV seems to run perfectly with Avast with no issues whatsoever. It was Malwarebytes that seemed to flag the Clam, and that issue appeared to be fixed after I reported the false positive a few months ago to ClamAV's site.

If you'll check my other posts regarding my 11-year old niece's computer and my installation of ST and Avast on her computer, you see that it was Spyware Terminator which SOLELY saw an attempted install of the MyWebSearch Toolbar, an autodialer and something called "HJK" (sounds alarmingly like "hijack", doesn't it?) after a MySpace session. Neither Avorax Shield or Avast even alerted her to this attempt. Admittedly, MyWebSearch is probably a minor threat, I don't know, but I was happy that I had installed ST at that point. Unfortunately, ST missed a multitude of other issues which Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware took care of. Sadly, despite my love of Avast, it's spyware section flagged but one issue and the active scanner flagged nothing...

As per my other posts, I do use Avorax Shield (don't know whether I'll keep this or not-rather lackluster performer compared to ST HIPS...), SuperAntiSpyware for on-demand use and Malwarebytes (although I had to uninstall this program this week after it updated and failed, complaining of a corrupted update which would not allow the program to start...). I put these on my neice's computer as she tend to have more malware issues from MySpace for whatever reason.

Hopefully, like a comic book superhero team, I hope that each of these program's strengths will compliment the others. If Avast and ST are the Superman and Batman of the group, Avorax seems to be the Robin and SuperAntiSpyware the Incredible Hulk (only shows up when the pressure's on, you know...)

Hope this explains my rationale a bit. Regards, Kyuzo.
