Default Can malware get in using download helper?

Hi.

I was wondering if malware can infect a computer when you use the firefox addon "download helper"? If the video is infected are you copying the malware along with the video?

I have often used download helper to download videos from you tube without problem, (I have heard that you can't get viruses from you tube vids), but recently when doing so a window opened saying " a program wants to change the computer" and it wanted me to sign in as an administrator, which I obviously declined. Now I am worried that my computer may be infected, is this possible/likley?

Also, is it possible to get infected downloading videos using download helper from any site, I don't mean getting infected by the site itself but by downloading an infected video hosted there?

You can get Windows malware from pretty much any soucre, some directly and others indirectly. See these links:

Your risk factor is multiplied many times if you don't use a sandbox and make sure your system, antivirus definitions, programs and flash are all patched and up to date.

I would install and scan with the free version of Malwarebytes and Trend Micro House Call.

keylow, I use DownloadHelper to download videos all the time and have never gotten infected due to an infected video. I suggest you start using Sandboxie, that way, once you delete the sandbox, you ll only concern would be with the videos and files that you download and recover to your hard drive.

The videos that you recover can be run in a sandbox if you like, I always do but its probably not necessary. Based on my personal experience downloading videos, it is extremely hard to get infected by one. In all the years that I have been using the internet, only once the antivirus that I was using detected a video as malicious and I know that particular case was a false positive by Avira. Most malware is tiny in size so distributing a malicious 100/500MB video doesn't make much sense as it wont get downloaded as often as smaller files.

Thanks to the responders.

Luckily I was using sandboxie at the time of the incident I described, I was just worried one of the videos I had let through the sandbox had caused the problem. I have since run a few scans including malwarebytes and so far I have found nothing, so I hope everything is fine.

Out of interest does anyone know if you can get a rootkit when using a limited user account?

Kernel mode rootkits can still run:

By the way, if rootkits worry you a little, you can pretty much forget about them if you run sandboxed all the time as Sandboxie don't allow drivers to be installed or loaded. Make it a habit to use SBIE.
