These days I rarely if ever perform routine scans with Avast (or any other security program for that matter).
Avast is constantly monitoring pretty much all the files that come and go on your PC or any websites visited in any case. I do pretty much all my browsing using Sandboxie and double check any programs or files I download before running them. If I'm unsure, I can test them first in a sandbox (or VM) too. This combination works for me. |

I do perhaps a monthly scan of my whole rig, using a selection of different on-demand scanners.
I have CIS set to "on access" scanning which does make some operations noticeably slower, but to me it's worth it. Some folders like Downloads, Torrents, and system locations I do scan very frequently. |

Not that I'm unhappy with Ad-Aware but I was going to try Avast for kicks but decided not to when they insisted on harvesting information from my computer I didn't want them to have. That's just wrong.
