Use the desktop configuration wizard. Yup it has one. You can make mepis pretty much anyway you want. You can make it look and feel like windows if you like. Don't know why you would want that...

in the task bar you should see a small speaker right click on it and go into show mixer settings. ensure you click on the buttons and your volumes are turned up. I experienced this problem also....
