In my experience I know no one who knows there is an alternative of any sort and when you suggest them they are mortified. I have used Softmaker and OpenOffice and rarely have an issue with them...

Ideally yes. Don't use the drive with the music on it for anything. You can put the recovery programme on a USB drive or a CD. I have used Recuva successfully as well as one other who's name escapes...

I love this program and you so rarely hear it mentioned. It does so much more than most photo editing/printing software with simplicity. I used to use it on my XP machine and never had any .NET stuff...

Ditto to everything said above. I've been using Softmaker office 2008 for a long time and it has served me 100%. Emails are scant and it loads way faster than Oo ever did for me.
