Default New visualizations for Pot Player

First, thanks for the recommendation of PotPlayer-- Once I got it figured out and added an English skin it is an excellent alternative to Window's Media. But I have not figured out one thing. That is adding new visualizations to the player.

The main menu gives you a link to Window's downloads for new visual effects for using when playing MP3 music. I downloaded a couple, but have not been able to have the player pick them up and include them in the menu of choices.

Anyone managed to do this, and if so how and using what technomagic?

Thanks.
BTW, Anupam-- did I do better with a title this time?

You did. Thanks samcraw .

I hope you didn't take it personally about what I wrote last time regarding the thread title. Just doing my job as moderator, because that's what I am here for. Don't mean to be picky or anything, or, bossy.

Default Personal?, never.

I gave up taking things personally a long time ago. I however have never given up the desire to learn, and I come here for just that purpose. So, you teach, it makes sense, thus it is something worth learning.

So thank you.

Now, those PotPlayer visualizations!

Sam

You said that main menu gives a link to download for new visualizations... but I was not able to find it. Can you please give a step by step as to how to get to it? I want to try it, and see what problems I get.

I was able to get to visualizations only after going to Preferences --> General --> Visualizations. There too, I don't see the option of downloading additional visualizations.

However, there you can see two options in Visualizations... one is a checkbox named "Use during playing music", and other is "Use with album art", which is checked by default.

Maybe you should check the first one, and then see if your downloaded visualizations work.

Default pot player

OK, I downloaded the program via the link that was given in your giznote. Then I installed it as usual. When it was installed I opened it and left clicked on the logo in the upper left hand corner, that gave me a menu of options. One of the options was the choice of a skin.

I selected the one "potplayer default skin -original_new-en.dsf" as it seemed to have the clearest translations and the most choices. Once that skin is selected, begin playing an mp3 or other audio only song.

When you do that a new item will appear on the menu (left click on logo) that has the word "visualizations" on it. When you open that menu it gives you choices about the visualizations

The second from the bottom says " download visualizations". clicking that option takes your browser to the MS visualizations download page. There you select and download the one you like. But after it is installed, there is a folder with it but no way I can figure to get the pot player to pick it up.

I have also learned, BTW, that the skins have different choices and menu, but the ones I have tried allow you to right click along the black border at the top you will get a longer menu like I described above.

As I said, I really like this player much better than WM player, but it does have some confusing elements to it.]

I hope I was clear enough that you will be able to follow what I am doing. If not let me know and I will try to make things clearer.

Thanks as always, Sam

Thanks Sam, this time it was quite clear.

I tried it out... and after a while of bonking my head around, I was able to figure it out.

The download page takes you to an MS page, where visualizations for WMP can be downloaded. I thought that maybe this would require WMP to be installed on the system. Since I did not have it installed, I wondered if it would work. I tried it both ways, by installing WMP, and also without it. It was not working.

Then, it struck me, that I should try full screen... and it worked. The visualizations will work in full screen, as it did with WMP. So, just choose to go fullscreen while playing songs, and the visualizations would appear. There you can right click on the screen, and choose the visualization you want, while the song is playing.

Make sure that "Visualization on/off" is checked, in the Visualization sub-menu. Then, to play the downloaded visualizations, you have to choose either "WMP visualization", or "WMP visualization+floating ball", and then you can choose from your downloaded visualizations, which appear further below.

I hope this help, and I hope I have explained clearly . In short, the visualizations will work when the player goes in fullscreen.

Default It worked, sorta!

Anupam, You have not been a jerk to me. I do not see you at all proud of your knowing or not knowing, as you said you had to do some head banging to figure it out. I have been playing about with it--it is over 100 F. here and an excellent time to be inside in the cool and muck about with music.

I have discovered that yes your method of getting to it works. I also downloaded several of the offered visualizations-- some of them worked, some did not. Haven't figured out the difference yet.

It would be nice to find other free sites that downloading working visualizations-- the ones on the MS page are either not particular interesting or lead you to a pay for the goodies page.

Again thanks-- and it is nice getting to know you a bit.

Thanks Sam . Well, 100 F is not much as per the Indian weather. Here temperature often goes beyond 104 F in summer .

Well, atleast some of the visualizations work.

About others that do not work, no idea, unless I get play with them. Maybe they are not compatible with PotPlayer? Or, maybe it has something to do with the WMP version installed on the PC? Can't really say. Maybe someone else will chip in and say more.

I had downloaded one of the visualizations for example, from the MS site, and it said that it required WMP 10, or above to install. I have WMP 9 only, and that too not installed. So, such maybe one of the reason. If it installs on the PC, then its another thing. I hope you selected the option of "WMP visualization", and then selected that visualization, if it was a WMP visualization. Only then, it will work I think.

If not, you can also post in PotPlayer forum. George(editor of BF Media Player article) said in a comment somewhere, that although their forum is in Korean, but they allow posting in English too. Or, you can also ask in the doom9 forum, the link of which you can find in the Quick Selection Guide of PotPlayer in the BF Media Player article.
