.mp3 or .m4a best for audio archiving

I have family history audio from 1996 of my late grandfather telling family history back to 1789. This audio that was put on cd’s in .cda format. I want to convert to .mp3 or .m4a format. Which of these two formats is the best format to use for archiving?
I must use either .mp3 or .m4a only. Long story

What do I use to convert with the least amount of audio quality loss?
