After using the windows 8 consumer preview, I agree completely. No difference in performance between windows 8 and windows 7. Before trying out windows 8, I thought unity was a bad way to consolidate post pc and pc era, now windows 8 was just a complete mess, making it harder for the advanced user. It took me days to look for all my win7 software when I just had to do right-click>show all apps. The multi-tasking, well is just for touchscreens. Microsoft could have done better and well, the truth is that windows 8 seems to be designed for people who consume data and information rather than the productive. (No, 97% of facebook use does not count)
Windows 8 is the post-pc operating system, designed for consumers that still cannot buy an ipad. If that's the case, goodbye microsoft. ( Smilies at the linux computer with a windows partition not touched in months)
Mubuntu will probably be the codename for windows 9. Or Wubuntu..Or Winbuntu..Wint? Wandriva? Wackware?

Default Smartphones, not computers, drive most Facebook use

"The report revealed that Facebook users spent more time accessing the social network on smartphones than on computers in March.

Facebook users spent an average of 441 minutes or 7 hours, 21 minutes accessing the social network via smartphones during the month. By comparison, users spent 391 minutes or 6 hours, 31 minutes checking out Facebook on PCs." - CNN

Smart phones seems to be all the rage with young adults. My daughter and nearly all of her friends carry one and it seems Iphones are loosing traction because I keep hearing how Android is just as good or better and not as expensive.

The iPhone losing traction thing vs Android debate is much the same old debate that we heard in the 80s and 90s - Apple is dying and Windows is kicking its tail...but how did that one turn out? Fact is that if [I]any[I] company stops innovating then they're dead meat.

Default Surface tablets by Microsoft

Microsoft unveils two versions of tablets, Surface (using ARM-based Windows 8, aka Windows RT) and Surface Pro (using standard x86-based Windows 8).

A Surface tablet comes with a Kickstand, and a detachable cover cum keyboard in two types, Touch Cover and Type Cover. (see Hands on with Touch Cover Keyboard - iPad Killer)

The design of the Cover cum Keyboard looks better than that of a Transformer or others in the market. But Windows RT will officially only run software available through the Windows Store or pre-installed software.

What's your take on this?

My thoughts ...
For an introductory tablet it has some catchy innovation. This will appeal to some of the young folks in marketing or sales. A reliance on Outlook may make this tablet quite attractive to the mobile business community. The USB port is a smart move. RIM and Apple missed the boat here.

MS has had some dismal offerings in the smartphone market and they are slow in getting W8 to this technology. Many companies are allowing employees to use their system of choice for company communications and app sharing. The Iphone and Androids own this space.

So many corporations and government offices still use an XP desktop. Many have not converted over to W7 and it looks like W8 will be a nightmare for them to use. This is where Microsofts core business resides. The Surface tablet will not be a player in this space. MS may need to introduce a snazzy desktop with a migration path from XP to 'W7 business' (I am pre-announcing on their behalf). Governments are switching over to Linux in droves ... maybe the corp world will be next!

I remember when vacum cleaners were supposed to make a dustpan and brush redundant, yet we still have ours. There's also an advantage with this "outdated" technology in that when you drop your shiny new i-whatsit on the floor and it smashes into a zillion pieces, you cannot suck it up with a vacum cleaner, yet a dustpan and brush will do just fine
I think them marketing monsters want us on mobile devices because they can earn more or $$$ from us, you are right midnight i still and always will use my dust pan and brush ( might you in saying that 2 month ago i bought a new fancy pants vacuum cleaner i'm using my dustpan and brush less and less , i'll try not to stop completely using it in case it spells to end of the PC but at least my house is cleaner )
I love my android phone but I got it to use mainly as a phone and to do all the other stuff secondly . For all stuff computer related I'll always use my laptop PC
