PCMAG recently concluded:

"Bottom line: If you need to do serious work, need powerful processing or multitasking, or need compatibility with a specific accessory or storage device, there's no good alternative to the laptop. Tablets can fulfill some of these needs some of the time, but when it's time to get things done, the laptop still reigns".

For me, the critical factor is cost v reliability. A lot of tablets are failing after only a few months and according to Statista, the average life expectancy is just over two years. When you weigh this up against 5-6 years for a laptop, owning a tablet doesn't make much financial sense unless your budget can stand this level of depreciation.

While enough people still have jobs and credit cards however, tablets will remain a must have commodity.

An interesting take on the tablet v laptop debate here.

In the new issue's editorial of a German magazine, the author tells a story about a friend of his who failed to use a tablet for a presentation because a software update already filled the hard disk. Seems like there are even more factors than just reliability.

Default "I can do more and more with less and less"

"I found that I could do more and more with less and less. Tasks that once required a full-blown desktop or notebook PC could be carried out faster and more efficiently on a smartphone or tablet. Unless I want to use full-blown applications such as Microsoft's Office or Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, then I can make do with post-PC devices. What's more, I can usually get things done faster since I'm not tied to my desk."

Default Shipments of Tablets to Surpass Desktops and Laptops in 2015

Shipments of PC desktops and laptops reduced from 341 million units for 2012 to 299 million units for 2013. They will continue to decline this year, with Gartner forecasting a figure of 278 million units, down 7% year on year.

Based on the same source, the shipments of tablets and mobile phones keep increasing from 2012 through to 2015. More notably, the shipments of tablets will surpass the shipments of PC desktops and laptops in the next year 2015.

"Mobile phones are a must-have and will continue to grow but at a slower pace... Meanwhile users continue to move away from the traditional PC as it becomes more of a shared content creation tool..."

... and don't forget that mobile apps are developed on real PCs.

That's why the PCs now are known as a "content creation tool" as I've quoted.

So you'd say apps are a form of content?

In a broad sense, why not?

Well OK, that's very broad.

So how are users "moving away"? A PC always has been a content creation tool "in a broad sense", so it still has the same audience as before. The only "new" thing is pure consume; something a PC was never made for.

Here I read the line differently. When it says users it doesn't mean all users, but probably most users, or a lot of users. More users are using a device for content consumption than users who need to use it to create content. Before the era of smart phones and tablets, the only popular Internet-connected devices are desktops and laptops. But in a post-PC world, the more mobile the devices, the more popular, judging from what the market trend has already shown.
