I use Dropbox for non-personal things.

So do I, with encryption and steganography for some personal things. But there's more to that, because you're storing data on third-party websites as soon as you create an account or even visiting it without a way to hide your browser fingerprints and IP address. Therefore, I treat privacy and security separately, because their relationship isn't always complimentary.

Things MS could have done to save the PC:

1) Not made the metro interface the default on Windows 8 (except for portable touch-screen devices).

2) Make the Xbox One PC compatible (i.e. buy a Xbox or a PC to play all Xbox games).

3) Push PC specs. PCs should have kept ahead of tablets in things like resolution and GPS (for laptops). But, the PC really hasn't.

Lucky I didn't throw my desktop out after all.

True. People around me are using tablets/smartphones more often than PC. And I only use computer when I other devices won't do the work. But, PC still got its edge at least in the next several years.

Default Personal Desktop still have a place

I have Android phone and tablet, plus a portable 1 TB hard drive that creates its own wifi network; so in effect tablet and phone have a TB of store. I do not - as Google wants - upload music from my desktop to its servers, then stream to my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7.

I carry my own fileserver and storage in my pocket. I have my whole D drive (documents folder) in my portable hd. I synchronize it with my D drive on desktop at home.

I use my home computer to burn permanent storage and upload to storage I have. I still do half my computing on desktop, though its nature has changed some. I interact with my desktop with tablet any room in my home.

I still use XP Pro and I'm still undecided whether to change to Windows 8 or Ubuntu.

There will always be use for desktop.
