Zorin OS

The RC for Zorin 6 is now available with their unique "Zorin Desktop". They also label this as their most significant release since the distro was first launched. Will be interesting to see if and how this works.

I'm still highly confused about where all these different desktops will end up. I took a quick look at the Mint RC (Mate version) yesterday and in comparison to Solus it looks archaic and ungainly, except for the main menu which has always been good. Hopefully the next six months will see some sort of definition come to this area, not least as folks begin to vote with their feet for one version or another.

My opinion... I think there is going to be shift change. I expect Gnome3 will continue to rise to the top. The question is, will the folks at Gnome seize this opportunity and play nice and work with those developers to produce a desktop that appeals to a rather large community of linux users. Meanwhile KDE seems to be bouncing off the walls with no clear direction.

Still some bugs to sort out but hopefully they will get these ironed out before the final release.

The Zorin final should be out quite soon now, and also the latest Pinguy based on 12.04LTS. Pinguy has gone for Gnome 3.4 whereas Zorin has opted for it's own desktop so these two should offer quite a bit of interest.

I will be watching the forums to see if the bugs from the RC version have been worked out. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to giving SolusOS a test drive.
