If you're not keen on Ubuntu with Unity desktop environment, you may like to try this live DVD based on 12.04 but with a big difference ...
From Distrowatch “Hybryde Linux is an Ubuntu-based distribution for the desktop. Its most unusual feature is an option to switch rapidly between multiple desktop environments and window manager without logging out - the list includes Enlightenment 17, GNOME 3 (GNOME Shell and GNOME 3 "Fallback" mode), KDE, LXDE, Openbox, Unity, Xfce and FVWM. This is achieved via a highly customisable Hy-menu, which also allows launching applications and configuring the system. All open applications are carried to any of the available desktops. The system offers an interesting way to work fluidly in a multi-desktop environment.” Home page: http://www.hybryde.org/ I downloaded from the link at Distowatch here http://distrowatch.com/ then I booted in to the live DVD and was very impressed with the ease of switching desktop environments without re-booting. May be of interest? Richard. |

Thanks for posting this link. I too saw it on DistroWatch today but gave up with their home page and default language being in French. The key for me will be how stable is it in use?

I'm looking at installing it maybe over the weekend and setting default language to English through downloading language pack - though my understanding of French is OK (well sort of!!)
So I'll post back sometime and let people know how it goes! Richard |

Not very impressed I must say, at this stage.
Installed on Dell 2gb mem so plenty of room as it were! But, on leaving /home untouched Hybryde became a hybrid, with none of the other desktop environments available when - by default - it booted in to my 'old' Unity. On trying to boot in to other d/e at log in nothing happened - just a screen with my wallpaper. So, did a clean install and it all works as advertised but so so slowly!! I got bored waiting for things to happen and now I am re-installing plain Ubuntu 12.04!! Still, it's very early days yet and who knows where this might lead in due course. No harm done, an interesting experience and certainly a project to follow as it (hopefully) develops. Richard. |
