Default Snowlinux

Snowlinux 2 "Ice" is now released and yet another "disliking" for Gnome 3 has led the developer to stick with Gnome 2. Snowlinux is based on the stable branch of Debian so it ought to be rock solid and indeed my quick run-through with the live version saw everything working perfectly. Support is through to February 2014 so this might appeal to those looking for a long term distro that is neither KDE or Gnome 3.

Btw, SnowLinux and Sn0wL1nuX (now known as LuninuX OS) are not one and the same distro:

Thanks for that Panzer. As if sorting through the Linux distros wasn't complicated enough already

Just spent the last couple of days trying Snowlinux 2 "Cream" Mate and to be honest it was almost exactly like Mint 13 Mate which is a good thing. I'll be trying Snowlinux 3 "Crystal" XFCE and see how it stacks up against Bodhi.

Was hoping Snowlinux would stack up to Bodhi... Yes and I know Bodhi uses Enlightenment, but I've always felt the two desktops had allot in common in look and feel. Anyway Bodhi still wins.

Anybody had a chance to check out the new release of Snowlinux 3 "White" yet? It just released yesterday and I'm downloading the Cinnamon version now to try out. Just wish they offered a torrent file so I didn't have to wait 2 1/2 hours for a download!

Not looked at this release but didn't find the others very exciting, or stable.

One thing I have done is to take an installed KDE version of Korora as base, then install first the Gnome desktop and then Cinnamon into it. Worked perfectly and both are available from the Korora package manager. You can then use both desktop systems by just switching between them at login.

Just in case you or anyone else is interested I have posted example screenshots of the two desktop environments here:

.. and here's yet another alternative proven by MC to be working .

The latest 12.10 beta of Luninux OS is already being heralded as more stable than the previous 12.04 based final (Ubuntu's fault - not there's). Even in a live session I got everything working fine including themes and installing Cinnamon.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

http://luninuxos.com/?p=1644

Plus (bonus ) if, like me you use Thunderbird, installing the Firetray addon will work with Cinnamon in the Luninux desktop. You will either get a static envelope or a number, depending on whether there are any unread mails.

This distro is stable, lightening fast and well worth a look. Comes with Gnome 3 and Gnome "Classic" desktops, plus now you know how to run Cinnamon too.
