Thumbs up Mint vs Ubuntu?

According to Distrowatch's popularity rankings, Mint has clearly overtaken the most popular Linux distro of all time "Ubuntu". http://distrowatch.com/

The only Linux Distro that I've tried till now is Ubuntu, that was some time back, until they brought the Unity interface and I think that Unity has killed Ubuntu for normal people making unobvious and a chore to figure out how to use. Ever since I've heard of Mint, I've been wanting to use it.

Which one do you prefer out of the two?

I use modified Ubuntu only to install Distros on USB.

Tried Mint on USB but it stopped working after half an hour so I ditched it.

Nevertheless, I like Mint more.

I think the key factor will be what happens with Gnome 3 over the next 12 months or so. Certainly distros that have ditched Gnome2 completely have lost users to either other distros or different desktops. Having seen the reception given to Unity, it might also be that Ubuntu's now "official" recognition of Lubuntu means they too feel the need to keep faith with at least one other option.

Why only Ubuntu and Mint? There are many more Distros available ...

Another option for you is to try some bas-tard Distro offspring of both of them (Ubuntu's look, Mint's Menus).

I have found refuge with PCLinuxOS 2012 while the developers of Mint and Ubuntu remove there heads from a very dark place!

No matter what you decide to use - Ubuntu or Mint - install Macbuntu (Mac OS X Transformation Pack) as well:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/macbuntu/

Or try Luninux OS:
http://luninuxos.com/?page_id=26

You can then brag around that you have Mac on your comp

I installed Macbuntu on the old gnome version of Ubuntu (can't remember the exact version) and it worked a treat.

Sadly, there doesn't appear an updated version that will work with Unity 11.10 unless of course I'm missing the proverbial fun 'n' games of yet another Linux work around!

I tried Mint first because they said it was the easiest build for a beginner coming over from Windows. Once i had driven Mint around the block a few times i gave Ubuntu a try, i found Mint to be the better of the two that's IMO of course...

Not anymore. I got tired of various sharing issues nothing major just irritating. Since then I must have installed over a dozen distros to look for a current and updated system. I found I really like xfce and Enlightenment but don't require light weight distros (yet). I adore Gnome 2 and have come to dislike Gnome3 . Ubuntu with Unity just doesn't make sense for a Desktop PC. Mint Julie is My work horse and Zorin5 works better with my games. I now have 2 hardrives and 5 partitions (two of which are used for Windows) and a 2TB external WD hdd. I recently created the 5th primary partition that I'm using for my Linux test bed. I have Mint12 KDE on it and is what I'm using while typing this post. I may eventually end up with a KDE desktop if this Unity and Gnome3 nonsense continues.
LOL, got carried away with my answer
