Default Downgrading Firefox on a linux platform

Linux mint performed an update which included upgrading FireFox to version 10. Although I appreciated the speed gains that came with the upgrade my addons became very buggy so I decided to switch back to version 3.6. No matter how hard I tried to remove FireFox10. I could not uninstall it using both Synaptic or Mint's software manager. I ended up downloading Firefox 3.6 and I managed to get it to work but I found by keeping the original .mozzila directory from version 10 I could maintain all of my settings therefore once version 10 can be made to play nice with several popular addons I will go back to it.

Just curious if anyone has experienced anything like this?

Firefox 10.0.2 got released, in which they fixed some more security, and other bugs. So, you might want to try that. And since version 10, they are saying that it has better compatibility with add-ons, whatever that means.

Well, when I had Linux Mint for a while, the Firefox setup I got from Mozilla was kind of portable. Means, it unzipped into a directory, and it ran from there via the exe. Have they changed that? If not, its just a matter of deleting the directory. Sorry, can only help upto this... from what I know.

Just curious...which addons were creating the problem? Never had an issue which has forced me to downgrade (am on Windows 7 right now...so cannot comment about Linux. Sorry!).

Have you installed the addon compatibility reporter (which should take care of all addon compatibility issues, hopefully across all versions of Firefox):

That is exactly how I made it worked although there is also a hidden directory named .mozzila which had all my settings in it that version 3.6 can use. I was tempted to use Febe and attempt a restore back to when I had version 3.6 but decided against it because I didn't want to break anything because I didn't know exactly what root files were change after the version 10 upgrade. I'll just switch back to version 10 when things are settled down and all my FF settings will still be intact by simply switching back to the FF 10 launcher.

Informenter was the main one which I use allot, Addblock and MiniMap Sidebar were also buggy. Again I'm not sure if some of these issues were caused by Linux and not FF. No worries, from past experiences the addons get updated to play nice on the latest FF version and all is good again.

Thanks guys for your input. I just thought it was strange that I could not uninstall FF it kind of reminds me of when I tried to uninstall Win IE

Update: I just updated to version 10.0.2 and the addons still seem buggy. I will just continue using 3.6 for now just like using a portable version of FF but still able to tap into all my settings. A kind of FrankenFox
