My tech took one look at the PCLinuxOS installation I had just performed when he came round on Sunday insisted that I download Ubuntu 10.10 which had just been released. Having had a bad experience upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 I was less than enthusiastic but agreed to his request. So far the experience is 100% positive with no glitches. Needed a few extras to run some of my media files but these were all installed automatically after a prompt. Still get the odd flickering screen which I noticed with my previous Ubuntu installation so I'm assuming that this must be an OS "characteristic"
![]() Apart from the slightly complicated and drawn out install process this really is such a complete solution now and I hope that it doesn't suddenly develop some of the issues I experienced last time.

I decided to finally try this version of Ubuntu. I have enjoyed Simply Mepis for its stability. However I still find doing things with multimedia, cd's & dvd's a drawn out process and frankly its just easier to boot back into Windows.
I will still make an image of my Mepis OS just in case. ![]() Cheers Wdhpr |

So far this is going very well
![]() I'm downloading the software I want, listening to my tunes and writing this on firefox all at the same time with not so much as a slow down. I really like the way Ubuntu will download all the stuff for your media and specific hardware needs at install.....SWEET Wdhpr |

This version of Ubuntu 10.10 is making me very happy. I believe Jojoyee is the residential expert with Ubuntu and so you may want to wait for her advice. For me though this version has been a very pleasant and smooth experience. ![]() Cheers Wdhpr |

![]() ![]() My previous encounter with Ubuntu started off well enough too and the problems only began developing after about two weeks use. I had a specific wireless modem recognition problem in that the (then) new Network manager would not always keep the connection but that now looks to be fixed big time ![]() ![]() The other issues I experienced were loss of settings and stability for Screenlets and program freezes including browser and OpenOffice. I guess I will need to run this installation for a month in order to see if the same scenario is likely to repeat itself. This has been a general issue with more than one Ubuntu distro as you will see reported in other places. I also notice that it uses way more CPU than PCLinuxOS but still a lot less then Windows 7. My memory use for instance is between 8-10% with either Linux whereas this was nearer 30% with Windows 7. The pile of security apps needed for W7 would account for some of this, but not all. Overall of the two, I really did like the KDE PCLinuxOS but the one noticeable thing for me was that the sound quality/volume was not as good as Ubuntu.

Yes and no. Yes it's "him" and no, he's no expert but a learner who likes to pick up something new.
![]() My experience in previous two versions of Ubuntu was rather smooth. Firefox works very well for me and its start-up time is much shorter when running on Ubuntu than on Windows. That is an added advantage to the shorter startup time for the Ubuntu system than Windows too. So +1 times two. I just downloaded the ISO file for the 32-bit Ubuntu 10.10 system and will burn it to DVD today or tomorrow. My priority then is to go through the new features and check out these Tips and Tricks if they still work well, which I believe most of them will. It's always good for sharing our experience in using something new. ![]() Last edited by Jojoyee; 12. Oct 2010 at 09:16 AM. |
