Looks like there's a bug report to say that python-gnome2-desktop dependency is deprecated. So I believe that the DockBarX Applet doesn't work with those steps for Ubuntu 10.10.

Will report back if I've found a solution.

Thanks for the quick response

I found the fix by going to the source. Their website
I followed these instructions before going onto the rest of the procedure.
Install python-wnck, python-gnomeapplet, python-keybinder and python-numpy (DockbarX might be able to run without python-numpy, but it shouldn't hurt).

Cheers

Well well well...

I am happy... for now...

I have just booted from Ubuntu usb and firefox works like a charm.I think thats good enough reason to switch back as my experience last time was bumpy mainly on browsing side, even chromium playing up.

And after trying 4 different distro's in the last 4 days it is so nice to be back to familiar system.

EDIT:
Another thought - the first thing I always do with Firefox is install WOT, Adblock and Noscript. Wondering if these could have caused all my trouble before

Default "Failed to download repository information"

Have been encountering this error "Failed to download repository information" while trying to download files to test out the Trips and Tricks so needed to KIV those related probably until the server is not that busy. So far even the mp4 codec and Storage Device Manager failed to download from the depositories after several attempts while there's no issue on the Internet connection.

I'm thinking about reinstalling.

It seems there have been some major changes to Ubuntu 10.10 that causes it not to work with the older version tweeks. No problem though... been down this road before. I'm thinking next time I'll just go ahead and make an image of the virgin OS afterwards incrementals until I'm feeling confident I have it right.

Cheers

Downloading Chrome 6.0 via Ubuntu Software Center experienced the same issue reported in my last post. Anyway I got it downloaded straight from the Chrome website and installed it.

Syncing bookmarks, autofill, extensions, preference and themes went through smoothly after setting up the built-in Sync with my gmail a/c id and password.

Now I have the same settings in Chrome across Ubuntu and Windows and on different PCs.

My first thought was to upgrade the existing Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, but after second thought, I've actually installed the new version on a new partition while the old version is still bootable from another partition.

Strange, but I didn't have this problem although I did hit a major issue last night.

Yesterday was a holiday here so Monica was in movie mood and Ubuntu would only play about 30 seconds of The Salton Sea before the movie player crashed. Thinking this might be codec related I downloaded VLC but this was the same. Slight jumpiness in the video although the sound was fine. Also tried copying the file from my external drive where these are stored onto the PC itself but still the same. In the end I gave up, ran PCLinuxOS from the live CD and the movie played perfectly

I'll try playing files in other formats today but this looks like it might be a graphics driver issue. I have to say anyway that the video quality with PCLinuxOS is higher on this machine so maybe their component choice is better suited to my motherboard. I'm also encountering the odd screen "flash" from time to time which again points in this direction.

Can I also ask if others with 10.10 are getting several screen flashes during the boot process while the Ubuntu splash screen is visible?

The boot process looks good to me for Ubuntu 10.10, even the system shutdown seems to be faster than 10.04, which had already been faster than Win7.

My only issue now is downloading software from the Ubuntu Software Center which seems to have always failed to download the repository info.

In 10.04, the Ubuntu Software Center gives an "Install" button once you've got a search result.

Now 10.10, looks like it's replaced the Install button with the "More Info" button. After clicking the button, it shows where the software comes from, then I have to click "Use This Source" button, after which I'm greeted with a pop-up window that says "Failed to download repository information", and "Check your Internet connection". (But my Internet connection is perfectly ok, otherwise I won't be able to post this. )

When click on Details, it shows a long list of the following:

Quote:
W:Failed to fetch http://my.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...rce/Sources.gz 403 Forbidden
, W:Failed to fetch http://my.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...rce/Sources.gz 403 Forbidden
...
...
...
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Has anyone experienced the same?
