Smile What Distro? Kubuntu of course...

Kubuntu for me all the way at this moment in time.. Linux newb here.. Excellent Forum to help you solve life's little mysteries (of which there seem to be a lot where Linux is concerned - lol)

Highly recommended for a Linux new starter, excellent repositories and being part of the *buntu family a lot of help and advise on the Ubuntu forums is relevant.

Rock solid in my day to day use...

Too right! That's the beauty of having so many distros to choose from

Default Mint12 KDE

I just tried Mint12 KDE since I liked Kubuntu I thought surely Mint12 kDE would be just as good or better. Wrong............ Hands down the worst distro I have ever tried. To be fair it may have been my computer's hardware or that it was a RC release. It was very slow to bootup and that was the least the problems. I did the post install update and it completely broke the system. Errors around every corner and complete lock ups that required a hard boot. Fortunately I made a image before installing Mint12 KDE and so I restored it back to Kubuntu.
I would be interested in hearing others experience with with this distro.

The Mint team responsible for KDE often seem to struggle, both with the releases and sorting issues thereafter. The problem is, Mint was perhaps the best Gnome2 distro and since Gnome3, lots of users are looking towards KDE as a possible alternative. This is focusing more attention on Mint KDE which IMO just isn't up with the best. If you've not already done so, for something light, solid and elegant, do take a look at Mageia.

Mageia, though perhaps the newest kid on block, sure packs a punch. but it cudnt determine a very old Nvidia GPU on my bro's laptop (Maybe repositories weren't updated). How about Fedora's KDE or Chakra or my fav openSUSE (11.4)

I've tried Opensuse and Mandriva and I'm considering Mageia. Primarily I'm still using Mint Julia which in my opinion leaves Gnom3 and Unity in the dust. Because Mint Julie is so rock solid I have no intention of replacing it....Yet

I put Kubuntu through the paces and it was pretty good although I feel the Plasma desktop is more bling than functional but not bad. Mint12 KDE was a disaster, for me anyway. I'm kicking the idea around if I should revisit PCLinuxOS because of how well it performed even in though it was with VirtualBox.

Unfortunately, this type of issue is pretty widespread across a range of distros/hardware. Mageia for instance will not output sound through my four speaker arrangement. I've tried every which way but unplugging the front jack and using the back pair only is all I can do. Network card and mobile broadband recognition is even more sporadic.

IMO Kororaa is far better than Fedora (KDE). More complete and more stable.

I have many different Linux distros as virtual machines, but installed Ubuntu for convenience and widespread tutorials on the netbook.
