Default Elementary 5 - more dross to the pile

Back in the days of Luna and Freya you could take what was probably the best looking distro around and make it your own as is (was?) supposedly the whole point of using Linux. Now with this latest release we not only get the same strangled environment to work with but a paid app store and even prompts to ‘fund’ developers if users have previously downloaded their stuff for free.

This distro is a real losers paradise unless you want something you can do nothing with that bugs you to pay for stuff you can get everywhere else for free. But hey you don’t need a minimize button when you can right-click on the title bar and do it from that. Garbage.

Considering the improved security offered by Windows 10 (updates excluded ) I’d even say to Windows users stick with what you’ve got if Elementary is your only choice for moving to Linux.

No way should this be in the top group at DistroWatch especially if the Pantheon bugs are as rife as previous releases and it’s little wonder that despite it being in some repos as a break your system option, no other distro has taken it up for a supported release.

I only read your post because of the interesting subtitle.

It looks good although, because of the focus on paying for apps, the rest of the improvements don't seem enough for a major release.

Further steps towards macOS should mean they can mimic more and reduce the conceptual development workload. But it probably makes this less attractive for me. So I've no plans to try it again.

I guess it was as much a rant as a post but I do get so frustrated with this type of Linux content.

Perhaps the worst example of wasted time, effort and resources is ReactOS being 20 years in development yet still in alpha for an unusable, unstable, unnecessary and unsafe clone of Windows.

If you strip out the unnecessary DE's such as Moksha and Pantheon plus the distros that are merely a copied base system with a few customizations then you're still left with too much choice to make Linux migration anything but a frustrating journey from Windows or mac.

Don't give up the rants and opinions. They're entertaining.

In another forum I frequent, one member has been ranting about the same issue every month for a few years. This week we were all surprised when he got what he wanted. It wasn't due to any of his efforts but he's really happy anyway.

SwitchedtoLinux had a few similar comments.
Outlining that the "tweak tool" no longer works is a deal breaker for me.
It's a no go for me Elementary.
Better luck next time.

Do think it's a good thing to offer to app devs.
Even if you can install with $0.00, at least it's a practical reminder to support them.
