Default Ubuntu 18.04

"I think Ubuntu 18.04 is a punishment by Canonical for the community's witchhunt against Unity".

https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/...aver-beta.html

I'd go further and say I have yet to see anything 'Gnome' that was even usable out of the box as an operating system other than to create a surplus of DVD frisbees.

MATE already gives us what Gnome 3 took away from V2 plus more, Xfce takes configuration options to another level, Plasma puts the awe back into some and Cinnamon drives the most popular distro on the planet. The sooner Gnome 3 flushes itself down the toilet the better off the Linux community will be.

In my experience, Ubuntu 18.04 works pretty well after full installation on my two Windows-10 computers with dual-booting.

GNOME is still my preferred DE for its cleaner interface than KDE Plasma.

In Windows 10, I would have to use these two programs CoreFTP and FeedForAll for site work and now I installed them in Ubuntu 18.04 via PlayOnLinux, which serves as a front end of Wine. So far both work with no issue.

With using up to three times the resources of the latest (yet to be released) KDE Plasma I still see Gnome as a depreciating value desktop, especially with the likes of Budgie gaining traction.

I have Ubuntu 18.04 MATE installed on one desktop complete with Compiz/Emerald and Cairo Dock replacing the bottom panel. Occasionally I get internal error messages but nothing stops and I just click through them and sometimes the Brisk menu falls over and needs restarting, otherwise it runs everything without issues. I have replaced a couple of the default apps with my own preferences like WPS Office as LibreOffice is just too slow.

WPS Office for Linux is also my choice. In its current release of A21, WPS Office is still using a deprecated library package "libpng12-0", which I have to download here and install it before installing WPS Office.

Further upon running WPS Office in Linux, it gives a message to say that some proprietary fonts are needed. After copying these TrueType fonts: symbol, wingding, wingdng2, wingdng3, mtextra, mtcorsva from Windows to Linux on the same device, it then runs smoothly.

I agree with Igor's summary of Gnome3 here in his review of the latest Fedora.

"But they are more than offset by Gnome 3 being useless and hard to make less useless"
